FURTHER FOALS
Three new weekend arrivals have brought the Lanwades 2010 foal count to four. The first is a first foal filly owned by Mr and Mrs Pakenham by their Champion 2-year-old SIR PERCY out of the winning PEINTRE CELEBRE mare LA PEINTURE. A half-sister to four winners from four other runners, LA PEINTURE is from the family of German Champions LOMITAS and LADY MARIAN. She returns to SIR PERCY.

Lanwades-owned RYELLA also has a filly, a second foal following a colt by US sire AWESOME AGAIN (a now 2-year-old named RALLY AGAIN). A winner herself at three in Canada, RYELLA is half-sister to multiple Canadian Graded winner RAYLENE and US stakes winner PRINCESS JANIE out of a half-sister to recent Middle Park and Queen Anne winner AD VALOREM. She too will stay at Lanwades to be covered, visiting HERNANDO.

The third foal and sole colt, is a grey first foal for Mr John Pearce's unraced DANEHILL DANCER mare MISS ST TROPEZ. Daughter of the French Listed winner MISS RIVIERA GOLF (by HERNANDO) and half-sister to five winners (all the mare's runners) including the Newbury Listed scorer HOTEL DU CAP, MISS ST TROPEZ will be another remaining at Lanwades to be covered as she is due to visit SELKIRK.

SMART FIRST ARRIVAL
The first foal of 2010 has arrived at Lanwades, a chesnut filly by leading US sire SMART STRIKE out of SUMMER NIGHT. This filly is the ninth foal of her dam and half-sister to five winners, the mare's first five foals, of which four - SONGERIE, SOUVENANCE, SOFT MORNING and SOURIRE - are all stakes winning daughters who are now themselves back in the Lanwades broodmare band and due to foal (two of them for the first time) in 2010.

SUMMER NIGHT's 4-year-old son AESTIVAL and 2-year-old son STATE SENATOR are both in training with Sir Mark Prescott, while her yearling full-brother to this year's foal will sell at one of the autumn yearling sales, along with SONGERIE's first foal a colt by MR GREELEY.

SIR PERCY HOME SAFELY
Unbeaten Champion two-year-old and 2006 Epsom Derby winner SIR PERCY has arrived back safely at Lanwades from New Zealand where he successfully completed his first Southern Hemisphere season at Rich Hill Stud.

SIR PERCY's first foals born last year have been very well received and his first foal sold at public auction made $85,000 at Fasig-Tipton in November. SIR PERCY's fee for 2010 is £6,000 (1st October, SLF) and he is available for viewing at Lanwades. Please call the Stud office (01638 750222) to make an appointment.

2009 INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATIONS
HERNANDO sires his SECOND World Champion as GITANO HERNANDO is rated top three year old colt in the World over the distance of one mile on dirt. Gr.1 winner CASUAL CONQUEST by HERNANDO also appears in the 2009 International Classifications. HERNANDO's 2010 fee remains at £12,000 (1st October SLF) and there are a few nominations for approved mares still available.

SELKIRK also has two of his progeny appearing in the Classifications: DARYAKANA comes out as second top rated 3 year old filly over 10.5-13 furlongs, while also lised is the ultra consistent Gr.2 winner PIPEDREAMER. SELKIRK is now back for the coming season and his fee is £20,000 (1st October).

KINGMAMBO, the sire of Lanwades' new sire ARCHIPENKO, is the only stallion in the world with five of his progeny appearing in the 2009 International Classifications, the best of them being ARCHIPENKO. Standing his first season at Stud ARCHIPENKO has some top class mares booked to him including Group winners and producers which include TBA Broodmare of the Year, ALOUETTE. Although his book is filling rapidly, there are some nominations still available for this Group1 Winner and leading international miler at a fee of £8,000 (1st October).

Also appearing in the Classifications is Lanwades-bred (in partnership with Ptarmigan Bloodstock) FAME AND GLORY who came out as the third highest rated three year old colt of 2009 to SEA THE STARS and RIP VAN WINKLE. FAME AND GLORY was an unbeaten Gr.1 winer at two; he finished second to SEA THE STARS in the Epsom Derby and went on to a five length victory in the Irish Derby.

FUN IN THE SNOW!
SELKIRK pictured at Lanwades Stud on 18th December enjoying the snow. SELKIRK, who missed most of the 2009 covering season due to an injury, is in fine fettle as the start of the 2010 season draws near.  He will cover a restricted number of mares at a fee of £20,000 (1st Oct conditions).

SELKIRK’s daughter DARYAKANA, who remains unbeaten, became his 12th individual Gr 1 winner when winning the Hong Kong Case in December. SELKIRK’s progeny have won over 1200 races and earned more than £25 million to date. His yearlings averaged 136,000 gns in Tattersalls Oct Sales Book 1 and 80,000 gns in Book 2 of the same sale – the stallion’s best sales season for the last 10 years.

HERNANDO enjoying the cold snap recently - all four legs off the ground, in perfect balance; just as in the famous picture of him winning the French Derby in 1993, sailing home alone under Cash Asmussen. HERNANDO, Classic winner of the French Derby himself, won seven races and £1,320,000, is so far the sire of five individual Gr.1 winners: French Derby winners HOLDING COURT and SULAMANI, 2008 Oaks winner LOOK HERE and 2009 additions CASUAL CONQUEST (Tattersalls Gold Cup at 10f) and GITANO HERNANDO, who beat USA’s leading 3 year old colts in the Gr.1 Goodwood Stakes over 9f at Santa Anita on his only appearance in America.  HERNANDO, sire of 70 individual two-year-old winners to date, and whose yearlings have made up to 400,000 gns, will stand at Lanwades at a fee of £12,000 1st Oct SLF in 2010.

HALFSONG VISITS SIR PERCY
SIR PERCY has the Swedish-bred dual 2005 Classic heroine HALFSONG visiting him this year.  She is the winner of 12 races including the Gr.3 Scandinavian Open Championship, the Listed Scandinavia Cup, the Listed Copenhagen Golden Mile, The Danish Derby and Oaks.  She has been known as the Grand Lady of the Scandinavian racing scene with earnings of SKr3,276,293 (€327,630).  HALFSONG was also the first Scandinavian-bred to be invited to the Dubai racing carnival and is only behind the great FUNNY LEGEND in the list of the top winning fillies and mares since 2000.

TWO YEAR OLD WINNER ALREADY IN 2009 FOR HERNANDO

HERNANDO carried on where he left off in 2008 with a significant double on the opening weekend of the 2009 turf season. The double was initiated at Mont-de-Marsan in France where the Lanwades-bred two year old SUPERNANDO scored by 5 lengths on his debut over 1000 metres (5f).  SUPERNANDO is the 5th winner - and first two year old winner – out of the BLUSHING GROOM mare SUPERSTORE, a full sister to AL BAHATHRI, herself a Classic winner and Champion three year old, dam of Classic winner and Champion three year old HAAFHD, and grandam of Saturday’s Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free winner GLADIATORUS.

 

The second winner for HERNANDO was the Newsells Park-bred GITANO HERNANDO, who added to his back end two year old maiden success with a comfortable win in the 10f Doncaster three year old Handicap.  Now owned by US-based Team Valor, his immediate target is the third leg of the US Triple Crown, the Gr.1 Belmont Stakes, in early June.

SELKIRK SUNDAY TREBLE
SELKIRK posted a treble yesterday; one at Doncaster, two in France, including a pair of maiden successes by three year olds. Highlight was the impressive maiden win of MAKAAMEN, who stepped up on his sole start juvenile second place to take the 7 furlong maiden by a widening 3 1/2 lengths.   MAKAAMEN’s dam BIRD KEY (whose first foal he is) was foaled at Lanwades, as was her half-brother (MAKAAMEN’S ¾ brother) high-class, but ill-fated SELKIRK colt ETLAALA (winner of the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes). BIRD KEY was consigned by Lanwades Stud in the Tattersalls December Sales in 2005 carrying MAKAAMEN and was sold for 100,000 gns.

SELKIRK’s other three year old winner, the Wertheimer et Frere homebred ZAGZIG scored in a €13,000 2,100 metre maiden race at Senonnes.

MORE "AL" FILLY FOALS
Relatives ALABASTRINE and ALAKANANDA foaled fillies on consecutive days earlier this week. The former, the last daughter of our wonderful foundation mare ALRUCCABA, has a bay or grey daughter by SELKIRK. ALABASTRINE's only runner to date, HAIL CAESAR, won on his debut and finished close up behind his Lanwades-bred Ballydoyle-trained stablemate FAME AND GLORY in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at the back end of 2008. She also has a 2yo ROCK OF GIBRALTAR filly and a SELKIRK yearling colt and now visits RAVEN'S PASS.   ALAKANANDA, dam with her first foal of short-head Epsom Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER and with her next two foals of multiple winner AJAAN and record-priced yearling and subsequent winner ALBAROUCHE, has a bay filly by MEDICEAN. This is her sixth foal and follows a now 2yo colt by INDIAN RIDGE, named RIGIDITY and in training with Henry Cecil, and a now yearling filly already named ALABELLE. ALAKANANDA now visits WITH APPROVAL.

SPANISH HAT-TRICK
Another wide-margin win yesterday brought up a quickfire hattrick of hurdle successes for Lanwades-bred SPANISH CONQUEST. The sequence began on 17 March and the subsequent wins on 21st and 25th came two days either side of the birth of his 3/4 brother by ALFLORA, reported on this page two days ago. SPANISH CONQUEST's HERNANDO full-brother VINANDO was a good class flat runner, placing in Listed company and achieving a Timeform mark of 109.

FOALING NEWS
Six more foals to report, half of them Lanwades mares, half of them boarders. KALDOUNYA, a half-sister to SELKIRK's Italian champion dual Group 1 winner ALTIERI, has a grey colt by HERNANDO, a full-brother to last year's bay colt. Already the dam of a winner, she has a 2 year old by NUMEROUS in training this year. SELKIRK's daughter, and ALRUCCABA'S grand-daughter, ALL IS FAIR has a filly foal by SIR PERCY. Her 2 year  old, ALL MY HEART, is a filly by WITH APPROVAL in training with David Elsworth. Both mares visit VITA ROSA.

The third of the Lanwades foalers is SIRENA, has an ALFLORA colt three-quarter brother to the mare's good HERNANDO first foal VINANDO. The mare has 2 year old and yearling fillies by DOMEDRIVER and SHIROCCO respectively and visits SIR PERCY.

Two of Chris Mills' four boarding mares foaled within two days of each other. Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner MISS ANABAA has a GREEN DESERT filly, a full-sister to the colt which brought 160,000 gns at last year's Tattersalls December foal sale. The mare now visits RAVEN'S PASS.  MILLINSKY, a four-time winning daughter of multiple Group winner MILLYANT, has a chesnut colt by SELKIRK, her second colt following last year's first foal bay by OASIS DREAM.  She now goes to ACCLAMATION.

Mrs Susan Roy's MADAME MAXINE, a four-time winning half-sister by DAYJUR to dual French Group winner PANIS, has had her sixth foal in as many years, and fifth colt.  This one is a bay by DUTCH ART and the mare, whose first two foals were both winners last year, returns to that horse.

FOUR FOALS FEATURING FABULOUS FILLIES
Four new arrivals at Lanwades include two fillies line-bred to the outstanding taproot mare ROUGH SHOD and both by the successful Kentucky-based STORM CAT horse STORMY ATLANTIC. The pair, both bay, are the second foal of the Listed winning SELKIRK mare KISWAHILI and the third foal of the US Grade 2 placed NADESZHDA.

KISWAHILI is a daughter of Group 3 Oaks Trial winner and Yorkshire Oaks runner-up KILINISKI, herself a grand-daughter, through the HAWAII mare KILAVEA, of SPECIAL. NADESZHDA is out of Italian Listed winner NINOTCHKA, who is out of KILAVEA's daughter PUGET SOUND.  SPECIAL is a grand-daughter, through THONG,of ROUGH SHOD who is also fourth dam, through her other outstanding daughter MOCCASIN, of STORMY ATLANTIC. The bay fillies were both foaled at Lanwades, from where their repatriated dams will visit ZAMINDAR (KISWAHILI) and WITH APPROVAL.

Two colt arrivals are a bay by ARAAFA ex VIVA MARIA, daughter of a champion 3 year old in MARIA WALESKA and half-sister to a champion 3 year old in POLISH PATRIOT, and a chesnut by HERNANDO ex OBLIGE. VIVA MARIA's SELKIRK daughter MARIA DI SCOZIA, twice a winner last year at three, remains in training in 2009 and she also has a 3 year old full-brother to that filly, KIRKSON, with her trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and an AD VALOREM yearling colt. OBLIGE, a stakes placed dual winner from the family of RAINBOW QUEST and WARNING, has a 4 year old SELKIRK colt, YESSEL, and a 2 year old filly by DALAKHANI in training and a yearling full-brother to YESSEL. She returns to HERNANDO.

MORE MARCH FOALS
Four more arrivals at Lanwades over the past few days, two to Lanwades mares and two to boarders.

CARIBANA, a winner at three last year from just four starts, has a first foal chesnut filly by SELKIRK. By HERNANDO, she is a grand-daughter of Yorkshire Oaks winner KEY CHANGE from the family of dual Derby winner KAHYASI.  Her dam CARENAGE, whose first foal she is, has a DOMEDRIVER 3yo colt called DIAMOND HEIST and 2yo and yearling full-sisters to CARIBANA to come.

ETERNELLE, like CARIBANA, Lanwades-bred and a winner at three, has produced her first colt, a grey by VERGLAS, after four successive fillies. The first of these, SASSICAIA (by HERNANDO) was a winner last year at three, and she has a 3yo full-sister to her, ELOISE, in training with Sir Mark Prescott and daughters by DOMEDRIVER and HERNANDO again to follow. The half-sister to German champion 3yo CAITANO will now visit SIR PERCY, as will CARIBANA.

Mr John Pearce's MISS CAP FERRAT, a half-sister by DARSHAAN to the HERNANDO Listed winning sisters MISS CORNICHE and MISS RIVIERA GOLF, has a bay HERNANDO three-quarter sister to that pair. Dam of a winner with her first foal in the useful Timeform 90-rated DOMEDRIVER colt ST JEAN CAP FERRAT, she travels to Ireland this season to visit PEINTRE CELEBRE.

The other boarding foaler was Chris Mills' multiple Group winning sprinter MILLYANT, whose chesnut filly by EXCEED AND EXCEL is her 11th foal in 12 years. She has the ROYAL APPLAUSE 3yo MIGLIORI (with Rae Guest) and 2yo and yearling brothers by OASIS DREAM to come for her and this year will visit ANABAA, sire of her best produce to date, the multiple stakes placed MILLYBAA.

NICE WINNER FOR SELKIRK
SELKIRK had a very nice maiden winner over the weekend in the form of TAURAKINA, a three year old filly out of the EFISIO mare ASMITA.  She got off the mark in a maiden race over 1600m (8f) at San Siro on Sunday winning easily by four lengths and certainly looks a promising sort.  TAURAKINA is half-sister to Italian Listed winner SEA SEX SUN and the Group 3 placed JACK AUBREY. Hopefully she may be seen contesting the Italian Classics later in the year.

SIR PERCY TO SHUTTLE TO NEW ZEALAND
Lanwades-based SIR PERCY, whose first crop are foals of 2009, will stand this year’s Southern Hemisphere season at
Rich Hill Stud in Matamata, New Zealand, in a deal brokered directly by the horse’s owners.

Kirsten Rausing, Owner/Manager of Lanwades Stud said:

“SIR PERCY’s first foals look highly promising and at Lanwades we have high hopes of this stallion following in the tradition of our Champion sires NINISKI, SELKIRK and HERNANDO.  

After nearly 30 years as a leading stallion stud in England, SIR PERCY’s shuttling to New Zealand will be a first for Lanwades.

We are particularly pleased he is joining Rich Hill Stud to stand alongside Champion PENTIRE.”

VITA ROSA'S FIRST MARES IN FOAL
Lanwades Stud is pleased to announce that their new stallion, VITA ROSA, the only son of Japanese “super-sire” SUNDAY SILENCE to stand at Stud in England, has had his first two mares scanned in foal.

VITA ROSA, who won 6 races (including three Group races) and approximately £1.7 million in Japan, has been well received by mare owners in the UK.

His first two mares covered and scanned in foal are both Lanwades-owned: MISS PRISM, a daughter of NINISKI who is herself a 4th-generation Lanwades-bred, and PAT OR ELSE, an ALZAO mare who is already dam of 6 winners including the Stakes Winner TRISKEL.  PAT OR ELSE is a half-sister to the two dual Group One winners MY EMMA (Prix Vermeille, Yorkshire Oaks) and CLASSIC CLICHÉ (St Leger, Ascot Gold Cup).

FIVE FURTHER FOALINGS
Five new arrivals, the first of them an important first foal across the Atlantic, the others a mixed-ownership group all born at Lanwades.

In Kentucky SONGERIE has a bay colt first foal by leading sire MR GREELEY. Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1 and 2 placed SONGERIE, whose dam SUMMER NIGHT has also foaled a colt by a major US sire in Kentucky this year (SMART STRIKE).  SONGERIE will now visit the exceptional-looking son of Danzig, LANGFUHR.

The two Lanwades owned arrivals are both fillies - a bay or grey by AUSSIE RULES out of stakes winner NINOTCHKA, who is a half-sister to the Group-placed pair NADESZHDA and NATALIYA, and a bay by SIR PERCY out of SICARINA, an unraced sister to the good-class HERNANDO horse VINANDO out of a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winners SILVANO and SABIANGO. SICARINA’s daughter was bred by the partnership of Kirsten Rausing and Leif Wretman. Her dam stays at Lanwades to visit VITA ROSA, as does NINOTCHKA, who goes to WITH APPROVAL, sire of her 2 year old daughter NEZHENKA, who is in training with Sir Mark Prescott. SICARINA’s 3 year old daughter LADYDRIVER and 2 year old son TOP MATE, both by DOMEDRIVER, are in training in Sweden.

The other two foals are colts out of the boarding mares KARLIYNA and MISS RIVIERA GOLF. Ptarmigan Bloodstock’s stakes placed grey mare KARLIYNA, a half-sister to the good stayer KASTHARI, has a grey second foal by OASIS DREAM. Her first foal, a colt by PIVOTAL who was also grey, realised 280,000 guineas at last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. She now visits INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

Mr John Pearce’s stakes winning HERNANDO mare MISS RIVIERA GOLF, already dam of a stakes winner in HOTEL DU CAP, and whose 3 year old GASSIN (by SELKIRK) and 2 year old MONT AGEL (DANEHILL DANCER)are both in training for their breeder with Michael Bell, has a bay by MONTJEU (her seventh colt from eight foals) and returns to GALILEO, sire of her now yearling.

MORE ARRIVALS
Within days of CROCKADORE producing her 14th foal, her winning daughter MITRAILLETTE (by MISWAKI) has had a colt by Derby winner MOTIVATOR, her third colt from as many foals following a now 2 year old by LINAMIX in training with Rae Guest and a 2008 by DOMEDRIVER.

John Pearce's Listed-winning HERNANDO mare MISS CORNICHE has produced a bay colt by GALILEO, her fifth foal in five years. Her first two foals, MOYENNE CORNICHE and MISS EZE,were both winners last year for Geoff Wragg - the former ending the season with an offical rating of 109, the latter winning the first of only two juvenile starts and running well in Listed company in the other. MISS CHAUMIERE, the mare's SELKIRK full-sister to MOYENNE CORNICHE, is in training for Mr Pearce with Michael Bell, and there is a smart yearling filly by DANEHILL DANCER to come for the mare also.

FURTHER FEBRUARY FOAL ARRIVALS
Another four February foals, headlined by a first crop daughter of SIR PERCY out of the stakes winning Lanwades-bred SELKIRK mare ALVARITA. The grey filly is her dam's third foal, following the GALILEO filly ALMIRANTA, now in training at 2 with Sir Mark Prescott, and a now yearling colt by HERNANDO, to whom the mare returns. This filly is the fifth generation of her family to set foot on Lanwades after her dam, grandam world champion ALBORADA, great-grandam Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE, and her taproot great, great grandam ALRUCCABA.

Two of the other arrivals, both colts, are out of boarders owned by Ptarmigan Bloodstock. ALOE, a winning LOMITAS half-sister to 2007 Deutsches Derby winner ADLERFLUG from the family of URBAN SEA, GALILEO, etc., has a first foal by first season sire RAIL LINK and visits MANDURO. Useful 2 year old UMNIYA, Group placed in Italy and 4th in the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, has a bay third foal by ROYAL APPLAUSE (after a colt by CADEAUX GENEREUX and a filly by OASIS DREAM) and stays with speed by visiting BAHAMIAN BOUNTY.

CROCKADORE, dam of nine winners from 11 named foals, has a chesnut colt by WITH APPROVAL. This is a full-brother to the now yearling filly, also chesnut produced last year by the Grade 2 winning daughter of NIJINSKY.

MORE FOAL ARRIVALS
Ptarmigan Bloodstock's FANCY DANCE has produced her first foal, a bay or grey filly by DALAKAHANI. A winner at three herself, FANCY DANCE is a full-sister by RAINBOW QUEST to the Group-placed TUNING out of a half-sister to Group 1 Heinz 57 Phoenix Stakes winner DIGAMIST.  FANCY DANCE visits ROYAL APPLAUSE in 2009.

Two more foals are a colt and a filly by SELKIRK. The filly is the first foal of another daughter of RAINBOW QUEST in WEATHER REPORT, an unraced 6 year old out of European champion 3 year old filly RAMRUMA (winner of the Oaks treble - Epsom, Irish and Yorkshire).   The colt is a chesnut out of FROSTY WELCOME, a Listed winner in Lanwades’ colours of the Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket and dam with her second foal of the three-time winning 3yo of 2008 CASUAL GARCIA. FROSTY WELCOME's 2007 SELKIRK colt, CHURCH OF ENGLAND, is in training with Michael Bell.  Both WEATHER REPORT and FROSTY WELCOME visit resident sire HERNANDO this year.

FIVE FURTHER FEBRUARY FOALS
Five new arrivals have brought to 20 the number of foals born at Lanwades or to Lanwades-owned mares in Kentucky thus far in 2009.

Included in these five are a pair born to half-sisters who contrived to produce first foals on the same day. FLOR Y NATA, a dual stakes placed daughter of FUSAICHI PEGASUS and ROSE OF ZOLLERN, has a bay filly by SELKIRK. ROSA DE MI CORAZON, her three-time winning COZZENE sibling, a bay filly by RAIL LINK. As recorded on this news page on 4th February, ROSE OF ZOLLERN, their German 1000 Guineas winning and Oaks runner-up dam, has also already foaled in 2009, a colt in Kentucky by ARCH. Both of her daughters visit SELKIRK in 2009.

ALL A DREAM, a great-grand-daughter of ALRUCCABA, has had a second consecutive grey colt by WITH APPROVAL and now visits our new horse VITA ROSA. Her first foal is a 2 year old colt by ALAMSHAR, inbred with four crosses – one through ALAMSHAR and three through the intensely-inbred ALL A DREAM – to ALRUCCABA’s grandam NUCCIOLINA.

GRAIN ONLY, a MACHIAVELLIAN daughter of a half-sister to Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner PURE GRAIN, has a 2009 foal which is a carbon copy of her 2008 first foal - a bay colt by HERNANDO.

The fifth arrival is a bay colt by DANEHILL DANCER out of Mr John Pearce’s MISS PROVENCE, a winning HERNANDO full-sister to stakes winners MISS CORNICHE and MISS RIVIERA GOLF. MISS PROVENCE now visits SELKIRK, sire of her very nice 2008 filly first foal.

FIRST FOALS FOR CHAMPION SIR PERCY
The first three foals by Lanwades Stud’s unbeaten champion 2 year old and Derby winner SIR PERCY have arrived. The first, appropriately enough, was a colt first foal bred by Millsec Ltd out of CODENAME a daughter of the Group winning ORFORD NESS, who is by another Lanwades resident in SELKIRK.

In Ireland, Goffs’ Chairman Eimear Mulhern’s Abbeville and Meadow Court Studs has a filly (pictured with her dam) out of MILLAY and closely related to classic winning fillies GIVE THANKS and HARAYIR.

The first arrival at Lanwades itself is a bay filly bred in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and SIR PERCY’s racing owners Victoria and Anthony Pakenham. She too has classic connections top and bottom, her dam HIEROGLYPH being a grand-daughter of 1000 Guineas winner HATOOF.

FURTHER FOALS
Three further foal arrivals to report, two on the farm here, one in Kentucky.

Across the Atlantic ROSE OF ZOLLERN has a bay colt by KRIS S’s successful sire son ARCH. ROSE OF ZOLLERN’s first two foals are both multiple winners and her third and fourth are the unraced 3yo WAR CHANT colt TAROOQ, in training with Simon Callaghan, and FLORIDITA, a 2yo full-sister by FUSAICHI PEGASUS to the dual stakes placed FLOR Y NATA, who is with Mark Johnston.  ROSE OF ZOLLERN will remain in Kentucky and visit STORMY ATLANTIC.

HEAT OF THE NIGHT also produced a foal by a Kentucky-based sire, a bay filly by DANZIG’s good-looking son LANGFUHR. This is the second filly in as many foals for the stakes winning daughter of LEAR FAN, following last year’s STORMY ATLANTIC filly, already named HERE TO ETERNITY. This one, though, arrived in Lanwades, where the repatriated HEAT OF THE NIGHT will now visit Lanwades sire HERNANDO.

The second local arrival is also a bay filly, this one by HERNANDO out of Ribblesdale Stakes runner-up AKDARIYA, herself a grand-daughter of Arc winner and European champion 3yo filly AKIYDA. This filly’s retained 2yo full-sister AKDARENA is in training with Jim Bolger while her dam, who has already produced two winners, also has a 3yo to run for her in the form of the twice-placed-from-three-starts-at-two REFUSE TO BEND colt AKBABEND.  AKDARIYA will also stay at home and visit SELKIRK this year.

EXCITING NEW ARRIVALS
Four arrivals over the past three days highlighted by 2009 produce for our Champion sisters ALBORADA and ALBANOVA. World Champion Filly and dual Champion Stakes winner ALBORADA, the dam of stakes winner ALVARITA and the dam of ALTA MODA who produced her first foal in Kentucky last weekend, has a grey colt by Lanwades sire WITH APPROVAL. ALBORADA has a two year old MONTJEU filly named ALTRUISTE (in training with Sir Mark Prescott) and a SELKIRK yearling filly named ALBARAKA, both retained by Lanwades. ALBORADA will now visit NAYEF

ALBORADA’s sister German Horse of the Year and triple Gr.1 winner ALBANOVA has produced a grey filly by GALILEO, her third foal following JANE EYRE, the record-priced yearling of 2007, and ALBERTUS PICTOR, a two year old colt by SELKIRK.  ALBANOVA will now visit HERNANDO.

The other two arrivals are colts by resident stallions; a chesnut by HERNANDO out of I DO (her fourth produce) and a bay by SELKIRK out of EMINENCIA (a full-brother to her first crop colt of last year).  I DO (by SELKIRK) has a two year old filly named WEDDING DAY (by WITH APPROVAL) which has gone into training with Jim Bolger.  I DO will re-visit WITH APPROVAL this year.

EMINENCIA, an unraced SADLER’S WELLS mare, was raised at Lanwades among stock bred by Matthews Breeding and Racing Ltd and she was purchased by Lanwades as a yearling.  EMINENCIA is out of dual Gr.1 winner MY EMMA and is set to visit TAMAYUZ this year.

FURTHER FOALS
Two further foal arrivals, both on Saturday, both colts, one each from two of Lanwades outstanding families. Here in Newmarket DIABLERETTE, a winning GREEN DESERT three-quarter sister to both multiple Group winner GATEMAN and recent winner LADY JANE DIGBY, produced a chesnut colt by SELKIRK, a full-brother to last year’s filly first foal. She now visits VERGLAS. In Kentucky ALTA MODA, an unraced daughter of champion sire SADLER’S WELLS and champion filly ALBORADA, has her first foal, a bay colt by leading US sire MR GREELEY. A mating for her in 2009 has yet to be decided.

FIRST FIVE FOALS
It’s a new year and a new foaling season and the past week has seen the arrival of the first five Lanwades foals of 2009, four here in Newmarket, one in Kentucky.

First to foal was the boarding mare LITALIA, a French Group placed mare from a classic German family, who produced her first foal a chesnut filly by Lanwades sire SELKIRK.  LITALIA visits SINGSPIEL in 2009.

Across the Atlantic SUMMER NIGHT, one of the leading lights amongst the Lanwades broodmare band, dropped her eighth foal in nine years, a colt by leading US sire SMART STRIKE, to whom she returns. The first chesnut produced by his dam after a run of seven bays, the colt is half-brother to a now yearling colt by another leading US sire in MR GREELEY and also to four stakes winning fillies in SONGERIE, SOUVENANCE (both by HERNANDO), SOFT MORNING (PIVOTAL) and SOURIRE (DOMEDRIVER). Meanwhile back here, the latest of the three arrivals at Lanwades is the first foal of one of that illustrious four, SOUVENANCE. A winner in UK, Ireland and Germany (where she scored in Listed company and placed at Group 2 level) and classic placed in the Italian Oaks, SOUVENANCE yesterday produced one of the first foals by champion 2yo TEOFILO, this one a chesnut filly.  She now visits SELKIRK.

The other two are a colt by NAYEF and a filly by MOTIVATOR. The colt is the first foal of HERMANITA, a winning daughter of HERNANDO and the stakes winning SECRETARIAT mare SUBJECTIVE tracing to the McCalmont taproot mare MESOPOTAMIA. The filly is the second foal and second filly out of the SELKIRK mare WHITE HEATHER, whose grandam is half-sister to NUREYEV.  Both mares remain at Lanwades in 2009; HERMANITA to visit WITH APPROVAL and WHITE HEATHER to go to PICCOLO.

SWEET LADY JANE
LADY JANE DIGBY, appreciating the step up to ten furlongs, posted her first win since her debut success in a Doncaster 7f 2yo maiden in August, 2007 when scoring readily at Lingfield on Saturday. Highly-tried in the interim (her first 3 runs after her maiden success were all in Group company) she underlined her class here in an £18,000 added event which drew a field little short of Listed standard.

The OASIS DREAM filly is the second generation of her family born at Lanwades, her mother SCANDALETTE, a daughter of Lanwades champion sire NINISKI, having been born in 1990, two years after the purchase of her dam MARIA WALESKA. Italian Horse of the Year in 1979, MARIA WALESKA became dam of European champion sprinter POLISH PATRIOT and also the Lanwades-bred 2yo stakes winner GRAND CAYMAN. Among SCANDALETTE’s six other Lanwades-bred winners are the multiple Group scorer GATEMAN (winner of 11 races for LADY JANE DIGBY’s handler Mark Johnston) and Royal Hunt Cup winner SURPRISE ENCOUNTER.

In the Lanwades broodmare band alongside SCANDALETTE are her unraced HERNANDO three parts-sister VIVA MARIA and her (SCANDALETTE’s) useful winning daughter DIABLERETTE, whose first foal is a 2008 filly by SELKIRK. Other fillies in training for Lanwades Stud from this family are MARIA DI SCOZIA, a dual winner at three last year for Peter Chapple-Hyam, and SCANDALETTE’s SELKIRK 2yo with Sir Mark Prescott, MME DE STAEL.

NEW EQUINE PROFESSORSHIP ANNOUNCED
James Wood has been named the Alborada Professor of Equine and Farm Animal Science. This unique professorship is in honour of the celebrated career of the thoroughbred Alborada.

The professorship has been generously endowed by the Alborada Trust, which was founded in October 2001 and is named after the well-known race-mare.

Alborada, bred and raced by Kirsten Rausing, has had an esteemed career, winning several prestigious races, including twice winning the Newmarket Champion Stakes (Group 1). She was officially rated the Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in the World in 1998.

The Alborada Trust's aims include the funding of veterinary causes in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, with activities primarily devoted to the welfare of animals. However, the Alborada Trust also assists with projects throughout the world associated with the relief of poverty, human suffering, sickness or ill health and in the advancement of education.
In his new post Professor Wood will lead the management and development of the equine and farm animal sections of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

Professor Wood has had a long career working with horses as well as other animals. For over a decade he headed the Epidemiology Unit at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket before joining the University in 2005.

"I am very grateful indeed to the Alborada Trust for enabling this development with their generous donation, and I look forward to a strong and productive relationship with the Trustees in the future."

Professor James Wood said: "It is a great honour to be appointed into this position, and I look forward to exploiting the exciting opportunities for research here in the University across a range of different equine and farm animal diseases. We must address the growing threats to human and animal health that exist in this changing world - and this is best accomplished through scientific evidence."

FIVE TO FOLLOW COMPETITION RESULTS
Final results are in for the 2008 Lanwades Five to Follow Competition, which this year has been won by Mr David Wilson from Lancashire who gets the top prize of £3,000.  Second place goes to Mr Rimmer from Liverpool who gets £1,500.  Third place goes to Paul Sorrell from Buckinghamshire who gets £750, fourth place goes to Tommy Gustafsson from Sweden who gets £500, fifth place to Carole MacPhail also from Buckinghamshire who gets £200 and the final prize goes to Lee Wallis from Sunderland with £100 on his way to him.  Many congratulations to all the winners.

There were two horses who shared the top spot each gaining 60 points.  ALLEGRETTO for the third year running was one of those who gained the top points after winning the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster and finishing second to YEATS in the Gr.1 Prix Royal-Oak the race she won in the previous year.  ALLEGRETTO is now six years old and has been retired from racing after winning nearly £500,000 in prize money to start her next career as a broodmare by her owners Cheveley Park Stud.

FAME AND GLORY was the horse to share the top spot.  This two year old colt won his maiden at Navan in October and followed this up with an impressive win in the Gr.1 Criterium Saint-Cloud at Saint-Cloud in November.  He certainly looks an exciting sort and he has already been handed a 16/1 quote for this year’s Epsom Derby.

FAME AND GLORY
Lanwades bred (by a partnership of Kirsten Rausing and Ptarmigan Bloodstock) and reared FAME AND GLORY scored a five length triumph in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby yesterday, taking his record to five wins (and a second to Sea The Stars in the Derby at Epsom) from six starts and his earnings to £1,315,391.

FAME AND GLORY was sold as a foal to his current owners for 190,000 guineas in the St Simon Stud draft at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, and his dam sold the following week to her now owner Nicholas Jones' Coln Valley Stud. Credit for the mating which produced FAME AND GLORY though must go to the late Leslie Harrison, who, as manager for Plantation Stud, sent the dam GRYADA to MONTJEU two years running, the second mating producing this star.

SWEET STAKES WINNING LADY JANE
LADY JANE DIGBY gained just reward for her consistent form this season with a wide margin win in the Listed Hoppings Stakes over 10 furlongs at Newcastle yesterday. A maiden winner at two, the daughter of OASIS DREAM and SCANDALETTE had already won twice and been placed four times (twice in listed company) from seven previous starts this year at four. Homebred by Kirsten Rausing out of a NINISKI half sister to champion sprinter POLISH PATRIOT, she is trained by Mark Johnston, who also conditioned her 3/4 brother GATEMAN to win in Group company at Newmarket, Epsom and the Curragh.

FIVE TO FOLLOW MAY COMPETITION WINNER
A £100 cheque is on its way to Gwendolyn Wilson as the competition winner for the month of May. Gwendolyn amassed 60 points after choosing FAME AND GLORY who won the Gr.2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial in May and LADY JANE DIGBY who won a Handicap worth over £12,000 on 1st May and then went onto finish 2nd in the Listed Braveheart Stakes. Congratulations to Gwendolyn.

UNLUCKY LADY
Lanwades homebred 4 year old LADY JANE DIGBY (OASIS DREAM - SCANDALETTE) has been a model of consistency this year, with two wins, three seconds, a third and a fifth from seven runs leading into yesterday, and while the solid run continued, she can be termed unlucky to have another placing rather than another win to add to her seasonal string. Baulked and shuffled back at a crucial stage just outside the three furlong pole in the mile and half Warwickshire Oaks, she suffered extra hardship when her rider had his whip knocked out of his hand when challenging between horses in the final furlong, the filly eventually beaten a head and half a length into third. This was the second Listed placing for the three-quarter sister to GATEMAN (guided by LADY JANE DIGBY's handler Mark Johnston to multiple Group success) and a black type win is not just well within her compass, but would be no less than just reward for her constancy.

PICCOLO QUARTET
PICCOLO's runners were certainly in tune last Friday, no less than four of his progeny winning on the day - one 2 year old, one 3 year old and two older runners. The juvenile was in Italy, where RIPIRA has now won the last two of her three starts to date, while here CAPE MELODY, who did not run last season at two, stepped up on placed efforts in three of her previous four outings this year to win a six furlong maiden at Chepstow.

The two older winners provided a double in the space of half an hour in the final two races at York. EQUULEUS PICTOR showed the 7lb handicap increase he received for his last start Haydock win no bar to further success by taking his win tally to six in the five furlong Class 3 bluesquare.com Stakes. This was his fifth success at the minimum trip following a maiden win over six. Thirty minutes later 7 year old JOE JO STAR turned the 12 furlong apprentice handicap into a procession, his 7 length success being the 10th  win of his career and taking his earnings past £80,000.

KESARA CRACKS IT
KESARA, a 4 year old daughter of SADLER'S WELLS and KALDOUNYA, bred by Kirsten Rausing and Niarchos Family and running for the same partnership, won her second race on the trot from just 3 starts this year at Lion d'Angers on Friday. Unraced at two and placed second twice from a handful of runs from 1600 to 2000 metres at three, KESARA has seemingly improved for the drop back in trip this year, her wins coming at 1550 metres (just short of a mile) and, the latest, at 1400 metres - the metric 7f.

KESARA is the second winner for KALDOUNYA, a winning half-sister to dual Premio Presidente della Repubblica hero ALTIERI (by SELKIRK). Her dam has a 2 year old colt by NUMEROUS and a yearling colt and a colt foal, both by HERNANDO and has been bred this year to new Lanwades horse VITA ROSA, an interesting mating given that the sire's third dam RIVERQUEEN is also KALDOUNYA's grandam.

GASSIN POWERS HOME
Mr John Pearce's homebred SELKIRK colt GASSIN overcame a 245 day layoff to win on his first 3 year old appearance yesterday. In doing so he also became the first winner trained for Mr Pearce by Michael Bell, who took over the Pearce horses following the retirement at the end of 2008 of Geoff Wragg.

Very much a Lanwades product, GASSIN was born and raised here, is out of a Lanwades-foaled dam and has Lanwades stallions as his sire and damsire. Twice raced at two,he is the fifth foal, fourth runner and fourth winner out of the HERNANDO mare MISS RIVIERA GOLF. A Listed winner in France herself, and already dam of a Listed winner in HOTEL DU CAP, MISS RIVIERA GOLF has a smart DANEHILL DANCER 2 year old colt named MONT AGEL in training with Michael Bell, a yearling colt by GALILEO and a colt foal by MONTJEU and is back in foal to GALILEO.

CLASSIC RESULTS
A busy weekend saw Lanwades bred or sired runners in classic and other major races in various parts of the world, and although the big one just got away, the results show the Lanwades horses to have performed with great distinction and consistency.

The weekend's major race, the Epsom Derby, saw Lanwades-bred (by a partnership of Kirsten Rausing and Ptarmigan Bloodstock) and raised FAME AND GLORY lose his unbeaten record when a strong-finishing second to SEA THE STARS in a race in which the slow early pace played into the hands of the 2000 Guineas winner and against the class middle distance stamina which we know FAME AND GLORY possesses.  James Willoughby summed it up perfectly in today's Racing Post: "It is frustrating that the 2009 Derby was not an epic encounter between SEA THE STARS and FAME AND GLORY because it simply was not a stern test of stamina". The Irish Derby rematch, should it transpire, will be very interesting.

FAME AND GLORY, who now boasts four wins and a second from five outings for earnings just short of half a million pounds, is the second Lanwades-bred colt to go close in the Derby in recent years following the photo-finish second of DRAGON DANCER behind the now Lanwades based SIR PERCY in 2006.

The near miss by FAME AND GLORY was the second in as many days in big races at Epsom for Lanwades-connected runners. On Friday HERNANDO's daughter LOOK HERE, heroine of last year's Oaks over the same course and distance, was beaten a nose and a nose into third by ASK and YOUMZAIN in the Group 1 Coronation Cup. It was an outstanding seasonal reappearance from LOOK HERE against two class colts with previous 2009 runs to help them, and she looks sure to build on her excellent record of two wins and three places from just five starts to date.

There was classic success for Lanwades sired runners over the weekend, and on two continents, though admittedly it came in events whose titles lend them a stature perhaps just a little beyond their true worth. In Australia PICCOLO's daughter EXPRESS AIR won the 1600m (metric mile) Queensland Guineas, while in Spain DOMESIDE, a son of DOMEDRIVER, confirmed his status as the best horse of his generation in that country with a facile success in the mile and a half Derby Espanol.

WITH APPROVAL got amongst the stakes action too when his indefatigable 9 year old son SILVERFOOT won the Tin Man Stakes at Arlington to record his 11th win and take his earnings to within striking distance of one million dollars. At the same time back on this side of the pond QUAI D'ORSAY, 3/4 brother to a couple of colts of similar durability to SILVERFOOT in FOREIGN AFFAIRS and BIEN ENTENDU (successful 12 and 11 times respectively) scored in the feature event at Musselburgh. The Lanwades-bred 3 year old, winner last year at two also, is one of six winners out of ENTENTE CORDIALE, whose stock have to date amassed 35 wins between them.

NOW A CLASSY TWO YEAR OLD WINNER FOR SELKIRK
CIMA FREEDOM became SELKIRK’s 115th individual two year old winner when impressively winning a maiden race by 2 ¼ lengths in Italy on his second start.  CIMA FREEDOM is a full-brother to Gr.1 Prix de la Foret winner FIELD OF HOPE who was also the winner of the Gr.2 Prix d’Astarte and second in the Gr.2 Hong Kong Mile.  FIELD OF HOPE is one of the 11 individual Gr.1 winners for SELKIRK.  CIMA FREEDOM was SELKIRK’s first two year old winner of the year so now both he and HERNANDO are responsible for two year old winners already this year.

BORDER PATROL SHOWS CLASS
BORDER PATROL, SELKIRK's second stakes winner of the week following TRANQUIL TIGER's Goodwood success, showed himself both progressive and versatile with his win in the Heron Stakes at Sandown last night. Placed on his first outing, BORDER PATROL has now won all three of his subsequent starts, and followed a maiden win over a mile with a Listed win at Newbury over six furlongs before stepping back up to the mile trip last night.   Bred by his owners Elite Racing Club out of their excellent EFISIO mare FFESTINIOG, BORDER PATROL will now be put away until September. The Group company he will asked to keep then should hold no fears for him.

NOTHING CASUAL ABOUT THIS CONQUEST
CASUAL CONQUEST led all the way to win the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on Sunday to become his sire HERNANDO's 4th individual Group 1 winner following classic scorers SULAMANI, HOLDING COURT  and LOOK HERE.   The four year old took his record to three wins, two seconds and a third, of which places two were in Derbies. His wins have been one each at age two, three and four, over distances from seven to 10 and a half furlongs, and his earnings are now £622,744. He is now spoilt for choice in terms of which Group 1 races he is sent for, and with form which suggests he may well be even better at the shorter (i.e. 10 furlongs) end of the middle distance range there are surely some more big prizes in store.

SELMIS IS SELKIRK'S NUMBER ELEVEN
SELMIS became the eleventh individual Group or Grade 1 winner for SELKIRK yesterday with a hard-fought but ultimately comfortable success in the Premio Presidente della Repubblica in Rome. Foaled in Britain but bred by Scuderia Vittadini, SELMIS was scoring his seventh win in 21 starts, which also include nine places. A maiden winner at 1600m (one mile) at three and placed in multiple Group and Listed races from 1600 to 2000 metres, he has really come into his own this year as a 5 year old, with three wins in as many outings, his previous start bringing his first Pattern success in the Group 3 Premio Ambrosiano in Milan. Amazingly, all six of his wins since his maiden score have been over the metric 10 furlong - 2000 metre - trip.   His dam NOKOMIS is a CAERLEON grand-daughter of MOVIN MONEY, a Del Mar Oaks winning half-sister to Breeders' Cup winner and champion sire COZZENE. While he is the first Group 1 winner by SELKIRK out of a mare by CAERLEON, he is by no means the first talented runner bred on this cross - it has already produced French Group 2 scorer FREEDONIA and a pair of Group 1 placed stakes winners in SCOTTISH STAGE (2nd Irish Oaks) and SCOTT'S VIEW (3rd in both the QEII Cup at Sha Tin and the Sheema Classic in Dubai). SELMIS is not the first son of SELKIRK to win this race, another son of his ALTIERI won this race in both 2004 and 2005.

SELMIS was his sire's second blacktype winner over the weekend, the double having been initiated on Saturday at Newbury by BORDER PATROL, who became SELKIRK's 73rd individual stakes winner with his success in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes over six furlongs. Bred and owned by Elite Racing Club, BORDER PATROL was placed at his only start at two and in breaking his maiden in his only previous outing at three - a mile maiden also at Newbury - defeated subsequent Group winner SOUTH EASTER. He looks to be a high-class prospect in races anywhere from six to eight furlongs.

FOALING COMPLETE FOR 2009
The final two foals of 2009 born either here at Lanwades or to Lanwades-owned mares are on the ground. Here the final arrival is a bay colt out of Argentinian Group 1 and triple Group 2 winner SLEW THE MOON by WITH APPROVAL, a full-brother to the mare's grey yearling filly. SLEW THE MOON's only runner to date is the ill-fated LUZ DE LA LUNA, a 2 year old winner in Ireland from just two starts. She also has a 2 year old colt by HERNANDO, in training with Mark Johnston.   Over in Ireland, the exciting late arrival is a bay filly by TEOFILO out of ALLELUIA, who was bred and is owned in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and Sonia Rogers. A six-time winner herself, including in the Group 3 Doncaster Cup, ALLELUIA is a daughter of the great ALRUCCABA. ALLELUIA's first foal is is ALLEGRETTO, who like her dam won six times, though she managed to do so in Group 1 company in the Prix Royal Oak, and three times also in Group 2 company as well as running second and third in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks and her second foal is also a multiple winner. She has an INDIAN RIDGE 3 year old KING'S SONG, in training with Sir Michael Stoute, an exquisitely-named 2 year old filly, ALL HALLOWS, by DALAKHANI and a yearling colt by ALLEGRETTO's sire GALILEO and will be rested this year.

SPRING ADVENTURE, bred by Susan Roy out of the Lanwades' permanent boarder YAVARI, won at Lingfield on Tuesday in Mrs Roy's mauve colours at her third appearance, having being placed on her only outing at two and her only previous start this year at three. A daughter of DR FONG, SPRING ADVENTURE is the second named foal and second winner for her dam, a winning half-sister by ALZAO to Prix Morny winner and useful speed sire TAGULA. YAVARI has a yearling colt by TIGER HILL and a colt foal from the first crop of the Roys' Group 1 winner DUTCH ART and is due to visit GREEN DESERT.

EPSOM FAME AND GLORY...?
Lanwades-bred FAME AND GLORY became outright favourite for the Epsom Derby yesterday with a commanding five length win in the Gr.2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown. The Montjeu colt, who is now unbeaten in four outings including the Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at two, was foaled at Lanwades, having been bred by a partnership of Kirsten Rausing and Ptarmigan Bloodstock and was sold at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal Sale. His dam GRYADA was sold in the Lanwades Stud consignment the following week to Coln Valley Stud. See also News 20 April.

SULAMANI MASTERY
HERNANDO's son SULAMANI repeated the achievement of his father in siring a classic winner with his first crop when his son MASTERY scored in Saturday's Derby Italiano. The Godolphin raced and Darley-bred MASTERY is out of the DIESIS mare MOYESII, a grand-daughter of dual Group 1 winning sprinter CHEROKEE ROSE. This is a famiily represented in the Lanwades broodmare band through the winning HERNANDO mare HERMANITA, whose dam SUBJECTIVE was half-sister to the dam of CHEROKEE ROSE. A winner at three in 2007, HERMANITA has a 2009 NAYEF colt first foal.   MASTERY's win is further proof of the strength of the NINISKI branch of the NIJINSKY sire line. Apart from HERNANDO and the successful LOMITAS (whose son TURATI finished second to MASTERY on Saturday), other sons of NINISKI to make their mark at stud include KALA DANCER (sire of two Group 1 winners in a stud career in Australia cut short by cancer); PETOSKI (sire of German Oaks winner NIGHT PETTICOAT, herself dam of German Derby winner NEXT DESERT and German Oaks winner NEXT GINA); successful French National Hunt sire ASSESSOR and of course champion British-based National Hunt sire ALFLORA.  

GITANO HERNANDO CLASSIC BOUND
While one Lanwades-bred colt heads betting for the Epsom Derby, another Lanwades-sired one, the HERNANDO colt GITANO HERNANDO, has been declared classic-bound across the water. After his unlucky second in the Dee Stakes at Chester last week, GITANO HERNANDO's owner Team Valor have declared him on target for a crack at the Gr.1 Belmont Stakes on 6th June. It will be the first try on dirt for the colt, but his versatility and consistency (wins on all-weather and grass and two seconds, one at Group 3 level from 5 starts) suggest he has a big chance in the US' toughest classic test.

FINAL FEW FOALS
The foaling season is winding to a close. Among the final few are four born over the past few days, two of each sex. The two fillies are both chesnuts by our own WITH APPROVAL. One, out of the BLUSHING GROOM mare CATCH, is a half-sister to six winners, include the multiple winning siblings by HERNANDO - ELDORADO, HIDDEN CHANCE and CAPTIVATE. The other, out of the Brazilian Group 3 winner THUNDER QUEEN, is also half-sister to a multiple winner by HERNANDO in TONNANTE.  

First of the colts is a chesnut by DUTCH ART out of the Susan Roy-owned boarder HIDDENDALE. The dam, a Nell Gwyn Stakes placegetter, has a SELKIRK 3 year old filly second foal named MISSION LODGE in training with Brian Meehan and now visits EXCEED AND EXCEL.   The other colt, and highlight horse amongst this batch of foals in terms of pedigree, is a bay by GALILEO out of ALBA STELLA. A Timeform 94 rated dual 3 year old winner herself, ALBA STELLA is bred in the purple, by 3 year old champion and dual classic winner NASHWAN out of Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE, dam of champions ALBORADA and ALBANOVA. This is ALBA STELLA's 4th foal; her first, ALEATRICIS, was a 5-time winner last year as a 3 year old for Sir Mark Prescott who also has her 2nd, the now 3 year old PIVOTAL filly ALICANTE and she also has a yearling filly by SADLER'S WELLS. Her GALILEO colt is closely related to 2006 Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, who is by GALILEO's sire SADLER'S WELLS out of ALBA STELLA's half-sister ALAKANANDA.

GROUP PLACINGS FOR THE STALLIONS
SELKIRK had a good weekend with his progeny headed by SUPER SLEUTH who finished a very respectable third in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.  Although she is still a maiden after six starts she clearly has ability and the aim now is to go to the Gr.1 Prix Diane at Chantilly in June over 10f. SELKIRK’s now six year old TAM LIN recorded a decent 2nd in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes at Belmont Park bringing his total earnings to date of nearly £225,000.

Also at Newmarket, HOH HOH HOH by PICCOLO just snatched 2nd in Gr.3 Palace House Stakes and CASUAL CONQUEST by HERNANDO finished 2nd in Gr.2 Jockey Club Estates.

LADY JANE DIGBY SCORES AGAIN
LADY JANE DIGBY again running over ten furlongs posted her second win of the year and third in total when scoring at Lingfield on Friday to take her total winnings up to nearly £40,000.  The OASIS DREAM four year old filly is out of SCANDALETTE  who is a daughter of Lanwades champion sire NINISKI and MARIA WALESKA who was Italian Horse of the Year in 1979. MARIA WALKESKA is the dam of European champion sprinter POLISH PATRIOT  and also the dam of Lanwades-bred two year old stakes winner GRAND CAYMAN.  Among SCANDALETTE’s six other Lanwades-bred winners are the multiple Group scorer GATEMAN (winner of eleven races for LADY JANE DIGBY’s trainer Mark Johnston) and Royal Hunt Cup winner SURPRISE ENCOUNTER. 

In the Lanwades broodmare band alongside SCANDALETTE are her unraced HERNANDO three parts-sister VIVA MARIA who is the dam of MARIA DI SCOZIA, a dual winner at three last year for Peter Chapple-Hyam and who remains in training this year. Also at Lanwades is  SCANDALETTE’s useful winning daughter DIABLERETTE whose first foal is a 2008 filly by SELKIRK.  SCANDALETTE herself has a two year old filly by SELKIRK named MME DE STAEL who is in training with Sir Mark Prescott and a yearling filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

A SMART WINNER FOR MY EMMA
Dual Group 1 winner MY EMMA looks like she has produced another nice filly in LOVE BIRD who was a very easy winner of the three year old maiden at the Curragh yesterday and now heads for black-type.  MY EMMA was consigned by Lanwades Stud at the 2005 Tattersalls December Sales when she made second top price of 1,300,000 gns when carrying this filly by PIVOTAL and a her daughter MOMENTS OF JOY topped the sale when sold for 1,650,000 gns.  Both mares were purchased by John Magnier.  In the previous year Lanwades Stud purchased EMINENCIA a daughter of MY EMMA by SADLER’S WELLS as a yearling.  She did not race and is now part of the Lanwades broodmare band and has produced two colts by SELKIRK and visits TAMAYUZ this year.

SIR PERCY PAIR ARRIVE
Three more foal arrivals include a colt and a filly by our first season sire SIR PERCY. ALEXANDRINE, ALRUCCABA's NASHWAN daughter who won four races herself and whose first four foals are all winners, has a chesnut filly. ALEXANDRINE's fifth foal is ALLANNAH ABU, a 2 year old filly by DUBAWI in training with Sir Mark Prescott sold at last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 180,000 guineas, the same figure which her sixth produce, a colt by OASIS DREAM, realised at the December Foal sale two months later. She now visits HERNANDO, sire of her exciting unbeaten 2 year old of last year ALCALDE.  

The other SIR PERCY foal is a bay colt out of COMMON REQUEST, a winning daughter of  LEAR FAN who traces to BEST IN SHOW, ancestress of an outstanding list of top horses, many of them champions, including EL GRAN SENOR, TRY MY BEST, PEEPING FAWN, RAGS TO RICHES, XAAR, CHIMES OF FREEDOM, and leading Australian sire REDOUT'E'S CHOICE. COMMON REQUEST also stays put at Lanwades this season, visiting VITA ROSA.  

The third arrival is a chesnut colt by first crop horse DUTCH ART out of Susan Roy's winning ALZAO mare YAVARI. A half-sister to Group 1 winner and useful sire TAGULA from the family of dual Breeders' Cup Mile winner DA HOSS, YAVARI is dam of a winner with her first foal and a very useful runner with her third in the form of recent Newmarket 3 year old fillies maiden placegetter SPRING ADVENTURE. She now visits GREEN DESERT.

SELKIRK SUCCESS
It was a second successive successful weekend for SELKIRK, not much more than nose separating him from a Group race double. In Milan yesterday 5yo SELMIS became his sire's 35th individual Group winner with a runaway win in the Group 3 2000m (10f) Premio Ambrosiano, his six length success taking his record to six wins and nine places in 20 starts for earnings of over €150,000. A day earlier at Sandown the hugely consistent Cheveley Park homebred PIPEDREAMER went tantalisingly close to another Group success when nailed on the line and beaten a short head by last year's Derby runner-up TARTAN BEARER in the 10f Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes. Group 2 winner PIPEDREAMER's earnings now stand at £363,884, with five wins and only two runs out of the first four, his seven placings including three at Group 1 level.

EPSOM FAME AND GLORY - ?
FAME AND GLORY (MONTJEU - GRYADA) bred at Lanwades by a partnership of Kirsten Rausing and Ptarmigan Bloodstock, launched himself to the head of the Derby reckoning yesterday when, even with his Group 1 penalty, he proved too good for his rivals on his seasonal debut in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown, a race won in recent years by Epsom heroes Galileo and High Chaparral. Winner of his maiden and the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in two outings last year, he is now unbeaten in three runs.   Bred on the successful Sadler's Wells - Shirley Heights cross and born at Lanwades  FAME AND GLORY was sold as a foal to his present connections for 190,000 guineas in the St Simon Stud draft at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal Sale. His dam GRYADA also sold in the 2006 Tattersalls December Sale, realising 180,000 guineas when purchased by Amanda Skiffington on behalf of Coln Valley Stud. They in turn sold the Sadler's Wells colt she was carrying then to FAME AND GLORY's connections at last year's Tattersalls October Sale for 200,000 guineas.

NEARLY DAY FOR SELKIRK
So near and yet so far for SELKIRK runners at Newbury on Saturday, with an impressive maiden winner and second placings in both of the Group 3 Guineas trials. BORDER PATROL stepped on his debut course and distance third at the back end of 2008 with a convincing success in the opening mile maiden, he and the well-bred runner-up pulling eight lengths clear of the third placegetter.   Then in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free / Fred Darling Stakes SUPER SLEUTH, having gone clear just outside the furlong pole, was collared on the line by previous Group 2 winner LAHALEEB. The luckless Cliveden Stud homebred is still a maiden, having been touched off by a short head in a Listed contest at Newmarket on her final juvenile start, and must now rate the best non-winner in training, though that won't apply for long. In the following Bathwick Tyres Greenham Stakes CITYSCAPE, also a homebred, racing for his breeder Khaled Abdulla, went down by a length on his seasonal debut to the racefit VOCALISED. With a win and two seconds (the latter of them in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes) in his three 2 year old runs, CITYSCAPE is proving a model of consistency and connections can head to the 2000 Guineas confident of a big run. Interestingly both SUPER SLEUTH  and CITYSCAPE are out of mares by sons of MR PROSPECTOR - FORTY NINER and DISTANT VIEW respectively.

RECENT FOALINGS
Mr John Pearce's MISS KATMANDU, a RAINBOW QUEST half-sister to Group winners ST EXPEDIT and ASIAN HEIGHTS has a bay colt by HERNANDO. He is not only full-brother to the mare's now 2 year old first foal MOUNTAIN QUEST, who is in training with Michael Bell, but also 3/4 brother to ASIAN HEIGHTS. The mare, who also has a SELKIRK yearling colt, returns to HERNANDO.  

HOT TO TANGO, a KINGMAMBO mare from the wonderful GREY FLIGHT family owned in partnership by Lanwades Stud and Niarchos Family, has a bay colt by MOTIVATOR. Her first two foals are a HERNANDO 3 year old colt and a DOMEDRIVER 2 year old colt, both in training, and she returns to MOTIVATOR.  

The other three recent foalings are all Lanwades-owned mares. AFFAIRE D'AMOUR, a four-time winning HERNANDO full-sister to super-tough FOREIGN AFFAIRS, has a HAAFHD colt and visits MOUNT NELSON. ZOOMING, an INDIAN RIDGE half-sister to stakes winners ZIPPING, ZELDING and NIPPING, out of a half-sister to LAST TYCOON, has a bay colt by SELKIRK. Her first two foals are winners; she now visits SIR PERCY. And the only filly foal amongst recent arrivals is a grey by ROYAL APPLAUSE out of IN THE PINK, a multiple winning INDIAN RIDGE grand-daughter of 1000 Guineas winner NOCTURNAL SPREE.

CHEVETON WINS HIS SIXTH RACE
Lanwades-bred CHEVETON (5 year old gelding by Most Welcome - Attribute) did not see a racecourse until his four year old season last year, but once he got the hang of things strung together five consecutive wins through the summer, four of them on grass and one at Great Leighs. He showed that he is still improving, and that racing surfaces all come alike to him, with his first-up success in a £18,000 5f handicap on Tuesday at Southwell. His handicap mark has risen from the 66 he raced off before his maiden win to the 96 he won off this week, but such is his consistency that he seems certain to be running off six figures before very long. His trainer, Richard Price, hinted that he will be aimed at some valuable prizes this year.

ANOTHER ONE FOR THE 'AL'BUM
In the space of 24 days in July last year ALEATRICIS ran up a string of five straight wins and yesterday at Yarmouth his 3 year old half-sister ALICANTE took the second step towards a similar feat with her second win in five days, scoring easily in the same race at Yarmouth which last year provided her half-brother with win number four.

A fourth-generation Lanwades product, ALICANTE is a daughter of PIVOTAL and the Timeform 94 rated dual winner ALBA STELLA, a NASHWAN half-sister to world champion ALBORADA and German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA and also to ALAKANANDA, dam of Epsom Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER. ALEATRICIS and ALICANTE are her first two foals and the third is a grey (like her siblings and dam) filly from the smallish penultimate crop of SADLER'S WELLS. Later this year she will provide buyers with a rare (one of the last) opportunities to buy a sales yearling by the great champion sire when she is offered at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, a sale topped in 2006 and 2007 respectivley by her three-quarter sisters ALBAROUCHE (Sadler's Wells - Alakananda) and JANE EYRE (Sadler's Wells - Albanova).

SUPER 2YO WINNER FOR HERNANDO
Lanwades-bred 2yo SUPERNANDO (HERNANDO - SUPERSTORE), scored his second win in four starts when scoring over 1300m (six and a half furlongs) at Dax in the French provinces yesterday. The first juvenile winner of the year (and the earliest juvenile winner ever) for his sire when winning on his debut over 1000 metres back in March, and placed 3rd and 5th in two subsequent outings, SUPERNANDO is the fifth winner out of the BLUSHING GROOM mare SUPERSTORE, an unraced full-sister to not only classic winner and champion AL BAHATHRI (herself the dam of a classic winner and champion in HAAFHD) but also CHAIN FERN, grandam of recent Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner LORD SHANAKILL.

THREE-YEAR-OLD COLT SPREE
In little more than 24 hours on Friday and Saturday three Lanwades-bred 3yo colts graced the winner's enclosure.

The hat-trick was started by ALANBROOKE (HERNANDO - ALOUETTE) who led all the way to win Ascot's two mile Spargonet Handicap by a comfortable five lengths, scoring his third win in seven starts in doing so. ALANBROOKE is half-brother to world champion ALBORADA, German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA, and French stakes winner ALMA MATER, all now members of the Lanwades broodmare band. A 380,000 guineas yearing himself, he is also half-brother to ALLUVIUM, a 200,000 guineas yearling now 2yo son of SELKIRK in training with Andre Fabre. Their dam, TBA Broodmare of the Year in 2004, is currently in foal to NEW APPROACH.

Later on Friday ALANBROOKE's 'cousin' HAIL CAESAR, who has been made a lot of use of in his career as stable-assistant to his stablemates FAME AND GLORY (Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Ballysax Stakes, Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial) and MASTERCRAFTSMAN(Irish 2000 Guineas) appreciated the chance to do his own thing when making all in the one mile one and a half furlong Gowran Park Race at that same track. It was a second win for the son of MONTJEU, who has also been placed 4th in Group races three times. Bred by Kirsten Rausing and Sonia Rogers in partnership, and sold to Timmy Hyde for 285,000 guineas at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, he is the second foal, and sole runner to date, out of ALABASTRINE, a GREEN DESERT half-sister to ALOUETTE out of Lanwades great taproot ALRUCCABA. ALABASTRINE's now 2yo daughter by ROCK OF GIBRALTAR ROCKIE BRIGHT realised €220,000 at last year's Goffs Orby Sale and her yearling son by SELKIRK sells at the same venue this year. She has a filly foal at foot by SELKIRK and is in foal to DALAKHANI.

The third Lanwades-bred winner was Mr John Pearce's homebred Saturday Nottingham scorer LOMBOK, who stepped up on some consistent but fruitless efforts earlier this season to take a mile and six handicap with some ease. The fourth winner for the SHIRLEY HEIGHTS mare MISS RINJANI, LOMBOK is full-brother by HERNANDO to dual Group 3 winner ASIAN HEIGHTS and half-brother to another dual Group 3 winner in ST EXPEDIT. Their dam has not produced a foal since dropping LOMBOK in 2006, but is in foal this year to Lanwades resident WITH APPROVAL.

JOHNSTON LANWADES DOUBLE
Mark Johnston recorded a double at Grade 1 tracks on Friday and Saturday with Lanwades-bred 3yo colts. The earlier, ALANBROOKE (HERNANDO - ALOUETTE) made most to win a mile and six furlong handicap at Sandown, striding away in the final furlong to score by six lengths. Then on Saturday QUAI D'ORSAY (SULAMANI - ENTENTE CORDIALE) made every yard of the running and stuck on valiantly to score by a nose in a mile and a half handicap at Haydock. QUAI D'ORSAY, who was running off a mark of 93, clearly loves to do his own thing in front, as did his multiple stakes winning 3/4 brother FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

FIRST SIR PERCY FOAL SELLS AT FASIG-TIPTON
SIR PERCY's first foal to sell at public auction fetched $85,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale yesterday. She is a filly out of CRYSTAL SEAS who is a half sister to Japenese Derby winner DEEP SKY. She was consigned by Taylor Made Agencies on behalf of Mr J Burke and Mr K Murphy and was purchased by Ever Union Shokai Ltd.

JOINT TOP LOT FOR STAFFORDSTOWN
Staffordstown yesterday consigned the joint top lot of the second day of Tattersalls October Book Two with a colt by SELKIRK out of EMINENCIA, an unraced daughter of Yorkshire Oaks heroine MY EMMA which sold for 260,000gns. It was trainer Paul Cole who secured the colt after a duel with Angus Gold of Shadwell Estates. He has been purchased for Dr and Fitri Hay who are based in UAE. SELKIRK’s yearlings have sold extremely well this year. In October Book One they sold for 200,000gns, 165,000gns, 150,000gns, 85,000gns, 80,000gns, etc.

Interestingly, Lanwades sire WITH APPROVAL was the broodmare sire of the other top lot a colt by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT out of EXCLUSIVE APPROVAL which sold for 260,000gns and WITH APPROVAL was also the broodmare sire of a filly by SHAMARDAL ex EXULTATE JUBILATE which sold for 110,000gns yesterday.

A FIFTH INDIVIDUAL GROUP ONE WINNER FOR HERNANDO
GITANO HERNANDO a three year old colt by HERNANDO made the trip across to Santa Anita a successful one when he gamely won the Gr.1 Goodwood Stakes over 9 furlongs and in doing so he defeated a star studded field which included multiple Gr.1 winner COLONEL JOHN and Kentucky Derby winner MINE THAT BIRD. GITANO HERNANDO has run a total of seven races; he won his maiden as a two year old at Wolverhampton, he won a handicap on his reappearance as a three year back in March and then finished 2nd in the Gr.3 Dee Stakes. We did not see him back on the track until 17th September when he broke the course record at Wolverhampton in a good conditions race over 9 furlongs and it was after this race that he went over to America. He is trained by Marco Botti in Newmarket and connections report that he will stay in America and we may possibly see him at the Breeders’ Cup Meeting. GITANO HERNANDO is the fifth individual Gr.1 winner for his sire HERNANDO following on from Prix du Jockey-Club winners HOLDING COURT and six-times Gr.1 winner and classic sire SULAMANI, last year’s Oaks winner LOOK HERE and this year’s Tattersalls Gold Cup winner CASUAL CONQUEST.

GROUP TWO DOUBLE FOR SELKIRK IN FRANCE
SELKIRK was the sire responsible for two Group two winners on the opening day of Longchamp’s Arc meeting.  First up it was the three year old filly DARYAKANA who impressively won the Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu over 2500m (12.5f).  She was stepped up in class after taking a Listed race last time out and in winning she retained her unbeaten record of four wins from four starts for her owner/breeder His Highness The Aga Khan.

Next up it was the now five year old horse PIPEDREAMER who just got up in the final strides to take the Gr.2 Prix Dollar over 1950m (9f) for his owner/breeder Cheveley Park Stud.  PIPEDREAMER who won the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket two years ago proved himself to be a real Group horse when winning the Gr.2 York Stakes after third placings in Gr.1 Prince of Wales Stakes and Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes last year and we may possibly see him next in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket.

NEW STAKES WINNER FOR SELKIRK
AKMAL a three year old gelding by SELKIRK became a new stakes winner for his sire when winning his third successive race in the Listed Noel Murless Stakes at Newmarket yesterday. AKMAL has run 13 times, won 6 and has been placed in 3. His trainer, John Dunlop, reports that he will be put away now and hopes he will make into a cup horse next year.

ANOTHER WIN FOR LANWADES-BRED QUAI D’ORSAY
Lanwades-bred QUAI D’ORSAY recorded his fourth win in a 13 furlong Handicap at Ayr yesterday and in doing so he pushes his Timeform Rating to over 100. QUAI D’ORSAY is 3/4 brother to HERNANDO produce - multiple stakes winner and Timeform Rated 117 FOREIGN AFFAIRS and to one time Derby favourite and Timeform Rated 109 BIEN ENTENDU. EASTER FOALINGS
Easter weekend brought a good fall of snow to Newmarket and a slew of foals, highlighted by ALAKANANDA’s bay filly by GALILEO. She is a three-quarter sister to 2006 Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER and to the same year’s record-priced yearling ALBAROUCHE, son and daughter of SADLER’S WELLS who are both still in training, with Geoff Wragg and Michael Jarvis respectively. Three hours before ALAKANANDA (who now visits MEDICEAN) foaled, her close relative ALABASTRINE, the youngest daughter of ALRUCCABA, produced her fourth foal, a colt by SELKIRK. The bay is half-brother to MAGISTRATE (3yo in training with Michael Jarvis), an unnamed MONTJEU 2yo with Aidan O’Brien, and a yearling filly by ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. His dam returns to SELKIRK.

Other foalings over the weekend, in chronological order, were a filly with a big German champion page, by Deutsches Derby winner and 3yo champion SHIROCCO out of SIRENA, a half-sister to German champion SILVANO and 3 time German Group 1 winner SABIANGO; a colt by HERNANDO also out of a half-sister to a champion, this one KALDOUNYA, whose half-brother is SELKIRK’s Italian champion son ALTIERI; a WITH APPROVAL filly ex ALTER EGO, a stakes placed grand-daughter of SUSHILA, a BEAT HOLLOW half-sister to 6 winners out of the BLUSHING GROOM mare CATCH; and, the only non-Lanwades-owned foal amongst the seven, an OASIS DREAM colt out of Chris Mills’ good group winner MILLYANT.

Chris Mills’ good producer MIDNIGHT SHIFT, dam of Group winner MISS ANABAA and the high-class handicap sprinters MOVE IT and OUT AFTER DARK, has a CADEAUX GENEREUX full-brother to that last named pair. She now goes to GREEN DESERT.

TROIS ROIS COULD BE ‘MAGIC’
HERNANDO looks to have another genuine classic contender for 2008 following yesterday’s scintillating six length debut win by TROIS ROIS in the 2000 metre Prix de Frauenfeld for debutant colts and geldings at Saint-Cloud. Jour du Galop nominate the colt as their “rising star for 2008”. A homebred owned by Alec Head and trained by his son Freddie, TROIS ROIS is the first foal of TREVISE, a great-granddaughter of TRILLION whose previous claim to fame is that on her own debut she beat subsequent champion filly SIX PERFECTIONS.

TROIS ROIS joins the unbeaten three-time winner INDIAN DAFFODIL and the two-time winner TSARABI among HERNANDO’s French-trained 2008 classic hopefuls, while Dermot Weld’s sole-start winner CASUAL CONQUEST, Richard Hannon’s dual stakes placed LATIN LAD, and Ralph Beckett’s once raced winning filly LOOK HERE are others from amongst the sire’s 12 2007 juvenile winners with genuine classic pretensions.

FIVE FURTHER FOALS
VIVA MARIA, whose 3yo daughter MARIA DI SCOZIA and 2yo son KIRKSON (each, as you might have guessed, by SELKIRK) are both in training with Peter Chapple-Hyam, has had a bay half-brother to that pair by AD VALOREM. As the latter is a son of DANZIG, the colt is closely related to VIVA MARIA’s champion DANZIG half-brother POLISH PATRIOT and is bred on very similar lines to the durable Lanwades-bred multiple Group winner GATEMAN, who is by a grandson of DANZIG out of VIVA MARIA’s three-quarter sister SCANDALETTE. VIVA MARIA now visits another grandson of DANZIG in dual Group 1 winning miler ARAAFA

The only other mare amongst the five recent foalers in Lanwades ownership is SICARINA, 100% Lanwades-bred but now owned in partnership with Mr Leif Wretman. An unraced HERNANDO full-sister to the very decent runner VINANDO, she has a WITH APPROVAL 3rd foal filly and now visits SIR PERCY.

Of the three boarding foalers, two are owned by Susan Roy and they contrived to produce colts within two days of each other. Nell Gwyn Stakes third HIDDENDALE has a chesnut by KYLLACHY; four-time winner MADAME MAXINE has a bay by MEDICEAN. Both mares will be covered this year by first season sire DUTCH ART, winner of the Middle Park Stakes and the Prix Morny in the Roys’ lilac colours.

The fifth arrival is a DANEHILL DANCER, the fourth foal and third straight filly for Mr John Pearce’s Listed stakes winning HERNANDO mare MISS CORNICHE, who has a SELKIRK 3yo colt, MOYENNE CORNICHE and DANEHILL DANCER 2yo filly, MISS EZE, with Geoff Wragg. MISS CORNICHE now visits GALILEO, a mating involving the same SADLER’S WELLS / HERNANDO cross as Lanwades-bred Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER.

FOALING NEWS
A steady stream of foals over the past few days has taken the 2008 foal count into the high 30’s.

A daughter and a great-granddaughter of Lanwades taproot mare ALRUCCABA foaled on the same day, both the foals, as they are by resident stallions, being very much Lanwades products. ALLEGRA, ALRUCCABA’s winning first foal NINISKI daughter has a bay filly by WITH APPROVAL; ALVARITA, a Listed winning daughter of SELKIRK and world champion ALBORADA, herself a daughter of ALLEGRA’s stakes winning ½ sister ALOUETTE, has a lovely second foal colt by HERNANDO. Both mares stay at Lanwades again for 2008 coverings, ALLEGRA returning to WITH APPROVAL, ALVARITA joining the first season book of Derby winner SIR PERCY.

The two other Lanwades-owned arrivals are also one each by the same two Lanwades resident sires. HEAT OF THE MOMENT, a SELKIRK daughter of Brazilian Group winner HOT THONG, has a first foal colt by WITH APPROVAL, to whom she returns; ETERNELLE, ½ sister to Germany champion CAITANO, has a filly by HERNANDO and now visits VERGLAS.

And it is VERGLAS who is the sire of one of the recent foals born to permanent boarding mares, Mr John Pearce’s MISS AMANPURI, ½ sister to Group winners ASIAN HEIGHTS and ST EXPEDIT, having foaled a filly by him. The other boarder to foal is Mr Chris Mills’ Group winning sprinter MISS ANABAA, who has a bay colt by GREEN DESERT.

SIBLING RIVALRY
Half-sisters KISWAHILI (by SELKIRK) and ROBE CHINOISE (by ROBELLINO) each produced foals yesterday on either side of the Atlantic, the latter’s by the sire of the former. Here at Lanwades ROBE CHINOISE, whose first foal 2yo SELKIRK colt MANNLICHEN is in training with Mark Johnston, produced a chesnut full sister to that horse. ROBE CHINOISE will visit ZAMINDAR in 2008. In Kentucky Listed stakes winner KISWAHILI dropped a first foal chesnut colt by DANZIG’s good racehorse and sire son, the extremely good-looking LANGFUHR. KISWAHILI will remain in Kentucky to be bred to leading young sire STORMY ATLANTIC, a mating which involves a doubling up, through two of her best lines, of the blood of the outstanding taproot ROUGH SHOD.

WITH APPROVAL SUPER STATS
Few sires boast better stats in Britain and Ireland in 2007 than WITH APPROVAL, who achieved a strike rate of 80% with four winners from just five runners. Among these are the Juddmonte homebred filly OPAL HAZE, 90-rated after her two wins. And the stakes winner tally for Lanwades resident grey went up to 45 over the weekend with BROKE SHARPLY’s Listed success Stateside.

FOUR FURTHER FOALS
Four further arrivals over the last few days, two of each sex. The colts are out of half-sisters owned by Mr John Pearce – Listed winner MISS RIVIERA GOLF has a GALILEO, her DARSHAAN sibling MISS CAP FERRAT a DOMEDRIVER. Another boarder, Ptarmigan Bloodstock’s 2007 December Sales acquisition UMNIYA, a Group and stakes placed daughter of BLUEBIRD, has an OASIS DREAM bay filly second foal.

But the highlight arrival amongst this batch is the grey filly third foal out of ALBA STELLA, a dual winning NASHWAN half-sister to champions ALBORADA and ALBANOVA. She is half-sister to ALEATRICIS, a 3yo KINGMAMBO colt and ALICANTE, a 2yo daughter of PIVOTAL, both in training with Sir Mark Prescott. ALBA STELLA returns to SADLER'S WELLS in 2008

FURTHER FOAL ARRIVALS
After the rush of early foals in January, February has seemed a little quiet, but there are nevertheless several further recent arrivals to report, including a pair by Lanwades resident WITH APPROVAL, one of them from the ALRUCCABA family, and a first crop filly by one of that family’s latest stars, AUSSIE RULES.

The WITH APPROVAL duo are a grey colt ex ALL A DREAM, a great-granddaughter of ALRUCCABA, and a bay filly out of MISS PRISM, dam of Timeform 117 rated ISLAND LIGHT. Both of these mares return to WITH APPROVAL, as also does KILBRIDE, a SELKIRK daughter of Oaks placed KILINISKI, whose AUSSIE RULES grey filly was born on February 15. Another grey filly arrival is the DANSILI out of Lanwades-bred winning COZZENE mare CONDOLEEZZA, who now visits SELKIRK, while the fifth Lanwades owned foal is a colt by that sire out of dual stakes placed OBLIGE, whose first-foal SELKIRK full-brother to this latest arrival, YESSEL, is in training with Mark Johnston.

Two permanent boarding foalers are a colt by BEAT HOLLOW ex ELUDE, bred by Lady Howard de Walden’s Avington Manor Stud, and a first foal OASIS DREAM colt bred by Chris Mills out of MILLINSKY. ELUDE is a true Howard de Walden product, being by SLIP ANCHOR out of a half-sister to KRIS; MILLINSKY is likewise very much a typical Mills homebred, a four-time sprint winner herself out of Chris Mills’ multiple Group winning sprinter MILLYANT.

The January foal total has grown further with two more born last night at Lanwades. KALANDIKA, an unraced DIESIS mare closely related to SELKIRK’s Italian champion son ALTIERI, produced her first, a colt by MOTIVATOR; CROCKADORE, a veteran of a dozen previous foalings, produced a filly (after 3 consecutive colts) by resident sire WITH APPROVAL. Meanwhile in Kentucky SUMMER NIGHT, half-sister to 2007 Group winning 2yo STARLIT SANDS, and dam already of Group winner SONGERIE and Listed winners SOUVENANCE and SOFT MORNING, had a filly by leading sire MR GREELEY. She now visits another of the leading stallions currently standing in Kentucky in SMART STRIKE.

Three further arrivals yesterday, all fillies, two of them first foals by SELKIRK. Lanwades-bred DIABLERETTE, a GREEN DESERT 3/4 sister to multiple Group winner GATEMAN and herself a 2yo winner from just 2 starts, has a chesnut by Lanwades' champion sire; Mr John Pearce's MISS PROVENCE, a winning HERNANDO full-sister to Listed winners MISS CORNICHE and MISS RIVIERA GOLF, a bay.

CARENAGE, a winning daughter of Yorkshire Oaks winners KEY CHANGE bred on the same ALZAO / DARSHAAN cross as Lanwades champion fillies ALBORADA and ALBANOVA, produced her fourth foal. Of these this is the third by HERNANDO, all of them fillies of whom the first, CARIBANA, who gave her dam a winner with her first runner when successful in a Wolverhampton 3yo maiden only last Friday.

ALBORADA, world top-rated 3yo filly in the intermediate category in 1998, produced her sixth foal, her fifth consecutive filly, when giving birth on Friday evening. The grey is a full-sister by SELKIRK to stakeswinner ALVARITA, and half-sister to ALMAMIA, placed 3 times in as many starts at 2 last year in the Rausing colours, and ALTRUISTE, a now yearling daughter of MONTJEU which has also been retained.

FILLY FIRST FOALS
Two further foal arrivals, both fillies, both first foals. Ptarmigan Bloodstock’s ASAAWIR produced her first foal, by OASIS DREAM, last week. A Hesmonds Stud-bred stakes placed daughter of ROYAL APPLAUSE, ASAAWIR is half-sister to French Listed winner TRINITY JOY out of a half-sister to Group 2 Sun Chariot winner TALENTED from a top Hesmonds family. Over the weekend Lanwades-bred WHITE HEATHER produced a filly by DOMEDRIVER. By SELKIRK ex DURRAH GREEN and tracing to SPECIAL, dam of NUREYEV and grandam of SADLER’S WELLS, WHITE HEATHER will now be linebred back to that highly influential modern taproot mare by visiting SADLER’S WELLS’ grandson MOTIVATOR.

FIRST FOALS
The first two Lanwades foals of 2008 have arrived - though the first one didn’t arrive at Lanwades at all, but in Kentucky. They are the Lanwades-bred Listed stakes winner HEAT OF THE NIGHT (Lear Fan – Hot Thong) produced her first foal on 8 January, a filly by leading US sire STORMY ATLANTIC. This filly is inbred to leading taproot mare ROUGH SHOD through that mare’s full-sister daughters MOCASSIN (3rd dam of STORMY ATLANTIC) and THONG, (tail-female ancestress of HEAT OF THE NIGHT). The mare now visits DANZIG’s handsome champion son LANGFUHR, sire of leading US older horse of 2007 LAWYER RON.

The other foal arrival is also a first foal, this one a SELKIRK colt out of the unraced SADLER’S WELLS mare EMINENCIA. Raised at Lanwades among the stock bred by Matthews Breeding and Racing Ltd, and purchased by Lanwades Stud as a yearling, EMINENCIA is out of MY EMMA and is a half sister to MOMENTS OF JOY, who topped the sale when, consigned by Lanwades Stud, she brought 1,650,000 guineas at Tattersalls December 2005 Sale. On the same day her Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille winning dam brought 2nd top price of 1,300,000 guineas, both mares being bought by John Magnier. This SELKIRK colt is a ¾ brother to 2008 classic hopeful PRIME EXHIBIT (Selkirk – First Exhibit), a maiden winner from 2 starts in 2007 whose dam is a MACHIAVELLIAN ½ sister to EMINENCIA.

CLEAR MESSAGE
CLEAR REEF, who became HERNANDO’s 34th individual 3yo winner of 2007 with his maiden win just before Christmas, began the New Year as he had left the old one, winning the New Year’s Day at Pontins Handicap – on New Year’s Day at Southwell. The Hesmonds Stud bred colt, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, had broken his maiden at the same track and returns there to attempt a hat-trick on 14 January.

ALBAROUCHE SCORES AT KEMPTON
Congratulations to owner Mrs Barbara Facchino of Barouche Stud for ALBAROUCHE winning her maiden by 2 ¼ lengths at Kempton last night.  Mrs Facchino purchased this filly in 2006 at the Goffs Million Sale for €2 million when consigned by Staffordstown Stud.  When purchased she was the highest priced yearling in Europe in 2006 and was the record-priced yearling filly in Ireland at the time.  ALBAROUCHE is a full sister to Listed winner and Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER and a half sister to the four-year-old AJAAN (by Machiavellian) who has won five races including both his starts this year. ALBAROUCHE is the third foal of ALAKANANDA (by HERNANDO) who has lovely yearling colt from the very last crop of Champion Sire INDIAN RIDGE, who will be sold by Staffordstown at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (book 1) at Newmarket in October this year.  She has a filly foal by GALILEO and is in foal to MEDICEAN.

FANTASTIC WEEKEND FOR HERNANDO
The weekend which kicked off in great style with LOOK HERE’s scintillating win in the Oaks, continued through Saturday into Sunday with more classic success.

First, on Saturday, Moyglare Stud’s homebred colt CASUAL CONQUEST, the most inexperienced horse in the race with just two runs under his belt, ran a great race to finish third in the Derby, and with this further race experience behind him there must surely be a big win in store for him. Then yesterday another colt showed high class Derby form, this one TSARABI winning the Gran Premio Villapadiema, the Spanish Derby, in Madrid. TSARABI was bred by Sonia Rogers’ Airlie Stud and becomes the second Spanish classic winner this year by HERNANDO bred by a leading Irish-based lady breeder, following the Spanish 1000 Guineas and Oaks successes of the Chryss O’Reilly-bred LA GALERNA.

With LOOK HERE and LA GALERNA amongst the fillies, and CASUAL CONQUEST and TSARABI among the colts this is clearly a high-class classic crop by HERNANDO.

SENSATIONAL OAKS SUCCESS FOR HERNANDO'S LOOK HERE
HERNANDO’S daughter LOOK HERE provided her sire with his third Classic winner when she strode up the Epsom hill to record a sensational victory in today’s Gr.1 Oaks. The lightly-raced filly was having only her third start for owner/breeder Julian Richmond-Watson and trainer Ralph Beckett, but showed no signs of immaturity when producing a searing burst of speed to score by three and three quarter lengths.

Bred by Jockey Club Senior Steward Julian Richmond-Watson at his Lawn Stud, LOOK HERE is half-sister to six winners out of an unraced close relative to champion 3yo sprinter PURSUIT OF LOVE.

BLYTHE KNIGHT LEADS THE CHARGE IN DIOMED
LOOK HERE’s win brought up a Group race double for Lanwades sires with their only two runners on the Epsom card coming, as it did, after SELKIRK’s son BLYTHE KNIGHT’s win in the Gr.3 Diomed Stakes.  As faithful servants go, Blythe Knight has proved himself the most constant of all. He was winning this race for the second consecutive year and has now amassed career earnings of over £300,000.

HERNANDO FOUR TIMER
Runners by HERNANDO scored in four different European countries over the weekend, including BERNANDO in France, TANGIBLE in Ireland and VESOZCHI in Italy, but the highlight was the win of LA GALERNA in the Spanish Oaks. The filly is out of the COMMON GROUNDS mare ATLANTIC BLUE, which makes her three-quarter sister to that mare’s good HERNANDO son ATLANDO, a Listed winner in France and Grade 2 winner at Santa Anita. ATLANTIC BLUE is half-sister to leading young US sire STORMY ATLANTIC.

ICESOLATOR OUT ON HIS OWN
ICESOLATOR, bred by Pier House Stud and trained by Richard Hannon, and who looked the best 2yo seen out so far this year when coming clear of his rivals to win the Listed National Stakes at Sandown last night, has dual connections to Lanwades; his dam was Lanwades bred and raced, his sire comes from the outstanding VALI family, a branch of which is currently doing so exceptionally well here.

ZINNIA, dam of ICESOLATOR, was bred at Lanwades by then resident sire ZILZAL out of IBTIHAJ, a RAJA BABA half-sister to champion sire DANZIG. Once raced (due to having met with an accident) ZINNIA was sold by Lanwades at the 2000 Tattersalls Newmarket July sale for 25,000 guineas to the Morrin family’s Pier House Stud, for whom she has now bred three winners.

ONE COOL CAT, for whom, ICESOLATOR was the second stakes winner in 24 hours, is a great, great-grandson of VALI, whose descendants, headed by champion racehorse and sire VAL DE LOIR (among other things damsire of SHERGAR) are legion. VALI’s grand-daughter SUSHILA became a foundation mare for Lanwades after being purchased as a yearling by Kirsten Rausing, getting King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner PETOSKI and, through his half-sister SHIMMERING SEA becoming ancestress of a raft of recent premier runners, including leading juvenile sprinter of last season STARLIT SANDS and the stakes winning siblings SONGERIE, SOUVENANCE and SOFT MORNING.

PICCOLO PAIR RUN LIKE THE WIND

PICCOLO had two runners at Yarmouth yesterday, both of them over the minimum trip, both of them coming home first. SIMPLE RHYTHM, owned, trained and bred by the Quinlan family, put the benefit of a previous run to good use when coming home four lengths clear of her juvenile rivals, 4 year old EQUULEUS PICTOR notched a second success when taking the sprint handicap.

TIGER ANYTHING BUT TRANQUIL
SELKIRK’s son TRANQUIL TIGER gave his rivals a galloping lesson at Newbury on Saturday, leading all the way and coming clear at the finish to take the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury, adding to his Newmarket Listed win of last season, and showing the benefit of his last-start fourth in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes behind exciting French colt GETAWAY. The ten length win over last year’s St Leger fourth REGAL FLUSH was the start of a quick across-the-card metropolitan double for SELKIRK  4yo’s as 15 minutes later the Cheveley Park homebred filly FONDLED took a Newmarket mile handicap on her first outing of the season.

Also at Newmarket, Lanwades-bred AJAAN confirmed the merit of his controversial win at the Guineas meeting by scoring readily in the mile and six furlongs heritage handicap worth nearly £25,000 to the winner. This is the fifth win in 10 starts for DRAGON DANCER’s half-brother, and, having scored with such ease by three and a half lengths off a mark of 95, he is likely to see his handicap mark soar well above 100.

ALLEVIATE MAKES IT EASY
ALLELUIA made a perfect start to her stud career with Group 1 winner ALLEGRETTO her first foal, and she has a useful follow-up in ALLEVIATE, who won her third race when making her four-year-old debut at Great Leighs last night in a manner which suggested further successes are in store. Like her Doncaster Cup-winning dam and Prix Royal Oak heroine half-sister, ALLEVIATE clearly appreciates a trip, as all her wins have come over 14 furlongs. ALLELUIA’s 3rd foal, ALVEE, a 900,000 guineas yearling daughter of KEY OF LUCK, is in training with James Fanshawe and her 4th, a full-brother to ALLEVIATE named KING’S SONG, with Sir Michael Stoute. She has a yearling filly by Dalakhani and recently produced a colt foal by GALILEO at the Airlie Stud of Sonia Rogers, co-owner of ALLELUIA in partnership with Kirsten Rausing. PICCOLO HAS 100 UP
PICCOLO had winners yesterday in Britain, France and Germany, but it was LUCKY LEIGH’s win at Redcar which was of way the most significance, as this filly is the 100th individual Northern Hemisphere-bred two-year-old winner by the horse. Fittingly, LUCKY LEIGH is owned and trained and was bred by Mick Channon, who trained PICCOLO himself to win races like the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York and the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

HERNANDO'S BIG CLASSIC TRIAL WEEKEND
Three Derby and Oaks Trial runners for a wide margin winner and two solid seconds meant a big weekend for HERNANDO with his classic 3yo’s. CASUAL CONQUEST’s six length win in the Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown was undoubtedly the highlight. This race has an excellent record as a trial for the various Derbies in recent years, having been won by Epsom Derby winners GALILEO, HIGH CHAPARRAL and SINNDAR and Irish Derby winners DYLAN THOMAS and ALAMSHAR in recent years. None scored in anything like as convincing fashion as did CASUAL CONQUEST, who does not hold an Epsom Derby entry, but who will be a live contender in either or both the French or Irish equivalents. Bred by his owner Walter Haefner’s Moyglare Stud Farm, he is out of the winning KRIS mare from a family which has tasted classic success in the not-too-distant past in the form of Belmont Stakes winner GO AND GO.

The fillies LOOK HERE and SEAL BAY were both second in their respective Oaks trials, the former at Lingfield on Saturday, the latter at Longchamp yesterday. SEAL BAY, never unplaced in eight starts, has classic connections close up, her dam being half-sister to Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner TORRESTRELLA. Yesterday she ran a good length second in the Listed Prix de la Seine. LOOK HERE, who was having only her second run, and who had beaten last week’s Chester Vase winner DR FREMANTLE in winning her sole start at two, was arguable unlucky not to have won the Lingfield Oaks Trial, getting a poor run and then showing greenness in he closing stages. She will go to Epsom with a much better chance than the current long odds available about her might suggest.

DOMEDRIVER METROPOLITAN WINNER

The fascinatingly-named TITTIBA (ex STARK BALLET), placed on all three of her outings at two, became another first-crop winner for DOMEDRIVER when scoring over 1400 metres (seven furlongs) on her 3yo debut at Maisons-Laffitte on Friday.

FAMILY DOUBLE ON GUINEAS DAY
Lanwades-bred AJAAN won an incident-packed final race on 2000 Guineas day to complete a last-two-races double for the ALRUCCABA clan at Newmarket on Saturday. AJAAN, bred in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and the Niarchos Family’s Course Investment Corporation, and now wholly owned by the Niarchos Family, has now won four of his nine starts. He is the second foal and second good winner for his dam ALAKANANDA, a grand-daughter of ALRUCCABA, following Listed winner and Epsom Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER. ALAKANANDA’s 3rd foal, record-priced yearling of 2006 ALBAROUCHE, is with Michael Jarvis; she has an INDIAN RIDGE yearling colt and a GALILEO filly foal.

In the race immediately before AJAAN’s, DR FAUSTUS had shown himself to be a 3yo on the up when taking his second race from four starts with a very comfortable win in the mile and two handicap, scoring by an easy three lengths off a mark of 89. His dam REQUESTING is an unraced RAINBOW QUEST daughter of ALRUCCABA who was jointly bred by Lanwades and Airlie and purchased as a yearling by DR FAUSTUS’ owner-breeders GAINSBOROUGH for 360,000 gns. REQUESTING is half-sister to four stakes winners – LAST SECOND, ALOUETTE, ALLELUIA and ARRIKALA – and half-sister also to the dams of no less than SIX Group 1 winners.

A DAUGHTER OF HERNANDO WINS SPANISH 1,000 GUINEAS
LA GALERNA, owned by Fernando Calvet’s Cuadra La Cincha, was the winner of the 1,000 Guineas run at La Zarzuela racecourse in Madrid at the weekend. This filly by HERNANDO was bred by Lady O’Reilly and is closely related to another good HERNANDO performer in ATLANDO who was a Listed winner in France and then was exported to America where he won the Gr.2 San Luis Obispo Handicap. LA GALERNA was a winner as a two year old on her second start at La Teste de Buch and judging on her performance in Spain there should be more to come from her.

SUPERB DOUBLE FOR MR PEARCE
Mr John Pearce who has boarded his mares at Lanwades for many years celebrated a wonderful double on Saturday when his homebred colts, MOYENNE CORNICHE won at Newbury and ST JEAN CAP FERRAT won at Nottingham. These colts are both three year olds winning their maidens, both are first foals of their dams who are half-sisters. First up was MOYENNE CORNICHE, a colt by SELKIRK having only his second run after finishing fourth in his only start as a two year old at the backend of last year. He has obviously strengthened up over the winter and won this very competitive Newbury mile maiden in convincing style by 4 lengths. He does hold an entry in the 2,000 Guineas to be held in two weeks time which will be up for consideration by Mr Pearce and Mr Wragg. MOYENNE CORNICHE is out of MISS CORNICHE (by HERNANDO), a winner at two and winner of a Listed race at three earning a timeform rating of 104. MISS CORNICHE has a two year old DANEHILL DANCER filly named MISS EZE also in training with Geoff Wragg, a yearling filly by SELKIRK, another DANEHILL DANCER filly foal and she visits GALILEO this year.

Next up was ST JEAN CAP FERRAT; this three year old colt by DOMEDRIVER deservedly won his maiden at Nottingham after having been placed in his previous two runs this year. ST JEAN CAP FERRAT is from the first crop of Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile Winner DOMEDRIVER and is the first foal of MISS CAP FERRAT. She, like MISS CORNICHE, is the daughter of the remarkable MISS BEAULIEU who spent her entire breeding career at Lanwades and is the dam of 11 winners. MISS CAP FERRAT has a two year old NAYEF colt named ROYAL RIVIERA also in training with Geoff Wragg, a DOMEDRIVER colt foal and she visits HERNANDO this year.

EXCITING PROSPECT FOR HERNANDO
The three year old HERNANDO colt named TROIS ROIS impressively won his second race of his career when scoring by 2 lengths in the Prix de Ferrieres at Longchamp over 11f. He now remains unbeaten (2 wins from 2 starts) having previously won the Prix de Frauenfeld at Saint-Cloud by six lengths on the 18th March. He is owned and bred by Mr Alec Head and trained by his son, Freddy Head who said “He won in very good style for what was only his second run. He is still showing some greenness so hopefully there is room for improvement. I am thinking about taking him to the Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe back at Saint-Cloud on 12th May”.

MORE STAKES SUCCESS FOR SELKIRK
SELKIRK's 3-year-old son MASTROIANNI was an impressive 2 1/2 lengths winner of the LISTED Premio Daumier over 1500m at Capannelle yesterday. MASTROIANNI was bred by Azienda Agricola Rosati Colarieti and is owner and trained by Bruno Grizzetti. Yesterday's win was his 2nd of 2008.

ETERNELLE’S PERFECT START
Lanwades-bred ETERNELLE made a perfect stud to her stud career on Sunday when her HERNANDO first foal daughter SASSICAIA won on her debut, a 1500 metre (seven and a half furlong) maiden at Madrid in Spain. ETERNELLE, a maiden winner at 3 herself, and a half-sister to Germany champion 3yo and older horse CAITANO, has a retained 2 year old full-sister to SASSICAIA named ELOISE, in training with Sir Mark Prescott, and a filly foal full-sister too, and a DOMEDRIVER yearling, also a filly.

DOMEDRIVER himself had a smart winner when OUTER CONTINENT won by two lengths on his seasonal debut in Fontainebleau yesterday. Once-raced at two, OUTER CONTINENT was bred by Lady Chryss O’Reilly’s Skymarc Farm and races for DOMEDRIVER’s breeders Niarchos Family, having been purchased by them as a yearling. The Niarchos family now have DOMEDRIVER himself back in France as well, standing at their Haras de Fresnay le Buffard.

ANOTHER GROUP TWO WINNER FOR HERNANDO
With the year drawing to a close HERNANDO has managed to sire another Group winner to top off a fantastic year for him. HERBORISTE a five year mare by HERNANDO out of the GONE WEST mare HELVELLYN bravely won the Gr.2 La Prevoyante Handicap at Calder on Saturday. She becomes the second HERNANDO mare to win this race after ARVADA winning in 2004. HERNANDO has now sired 15 individual Group/Graded winners including three Gr.1 winners; LOOK HERE in 2008 and French Derby winners HOLDING COURT and SULAMANI.

ANOTHER LANWADES-BRED TWO YEAR OLD WINNER
Lanwades-bred MANNLICHEN was an impressive winner of the mile maiden race for two year olds at Great Leighs yesterday. MANNLICHEN is by Lanwades sire SELKIRK and is the first foal of out of the ROBELLINO mare ROBE CHINIOISE. He was sold at Tattersalls October Yearling Sales Part one for 65,000 gns to Mark Johnston who trained him to this victory. ROBE CHINOISE is also Lanwades-bred, she won two races and was placed 10 times gaining a Timeform Rating of 103. Blandford Bloodstock purchased MANNLICHEN's own brother for 42,000 gns at this year's Tattersalls October Sales Part 2 and ROBE CHINOISE also has a 2008 filly by SELKIRK.

ANOTHER STAKES WINNER FOR HERNANDO
TROIS ROIS a three year old colt by HERNANDO won the Listed Grand Prix de Marseille over the weekend in good style.  He had previously been third in Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe at Longchamp and here he was registering his first black type win.   TROIS ROIS' win was very much a family affair as he is bred and owned by Alec Head and trained by his son Freddy.  HERNANDO is now the sire of 33 individual Group/Stakes winners

MORE FAME AND GLORY
The 2008 flat season has ended spectacularly for Lanwades-breds with the win today of the Aidan O'Brien-trained FAME AND GLORY in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. The MONTJEU colt, who  is out of the SHIRLEY HEIGHTS mare GRYADA, was bred in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and Ptarmigan Bloodstock.. FAME AND GLORY was consigned by St Simon Stud and sold to his present connections for 190,000 gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Sales. He is now unbeaten in two starts.

FAME AND GLORY BIDS TO LIVE UP TO NAME
FAME AND GLORY, bred in partnership by Lanwades Stud and Ptarmigan Bloodstock made a winning debut at Navan, leading all the way to defeat his more fancied stablemate, SIRGARFIELDSOBERS (a full brother to Derby winner AUTHORIZED) in the one mile maiden.  The son of MONTJEU is the sixth winner out of the Shirley Heights mare GRYADA, and is also the 7th individual Lanwades-born two year old winner of 2008.  FAME AND GLORY was consigned by St Simon Stud and sold to his present connections for 190,000 gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Sales.  St Simon Stud will be consigning 11 foals at this year’s Tattersalls December Sales including an OASIS DREAM half-brother to this year’s unbeaten two year old winner ALCALDE.

ANOTHER TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER
Lanwades-bred ALANBROOKE won his maiden at Nottingham yesterday on his second attempt.  This good looking son of HERNANDO was sold in the Staffordstown draft at the 2007 Tattersalls October Sales for 380,000 gns.  He is a half-brother to World Champion ALBORADA and German Champion ALBANOVA. He is the tenth foal out of the wonderful broodmare ALOUETTE of which eight are winners. His half brother yearling by SELKIRK was bought by John Ferguson at Tattersalls yesterday.  His close relative the four year old ALGARADE (by GREEN DESERT ex ALEXANDRINE) who has won 3 times and has a Timeform rating of 96 will be sold as a filly out of training on Tuesday, 2nd December at Tattersalls December Sales.  This was HERNANDO’s 60th individual two-year-old winner.

THREE WINNERS IN ONE DAY
Lanwades celebrated yesterday as three Lanwades bred/raised animals won at three different racetracks in England.  The afternoon started with ALCALDE a two year old colt by HERNANDO ex ALEXANDRINE won his second race to make it two from two.  Here he won a Conditions race at Leicester following on from his winning debut at Brighton on 11th September.  ALCALDE is the fourth foal and fourth winner out of four-time winner ALEXANDRINE and the fifth foal a now yearling filly foal by DUBAWI sells today as lot 347 of the Staffordstown draft at the Tattersalls October Sales.

Next up was Lanwades long standing client Mr John Pearce’s bred and owned two year old filly MISS EZE winning her maiden first time out at Folkestone.  She is by DANEHILL DANCER out of MISS CORNICHE (by HERNANDO).  The winner is a half sister to Newbury Maiden winner MOYENNE CORNICHE (by SELKIRK) and is the second foal of MISS CORNICHE, a ten furlong listed winner.  MISS CORNICHE has a yearling filly by SELKIRK and a full sister foal to MISS EZE.

Third up was CAPAL DUBH ALAINN who won a fourteen runner handicap at Catterick.  This three year old gelding is by KALANISI and is the first foal of the winning mare TARIFANA.  He was sold as a yearling in the Staffordstown draft at the 2006 Goffs Million Sale.

A SECOND WIN FOR MARIA DI SCOZIA
Lanwades-bred and owned three year old MARIA DI SCOZIA notched up her second win of the year by just holding on in the 10f Racing Here Friday 17th October Handicap at Redcar.  This was a good performance having just returned from a long layoff and also being dropped 4f in trip.  She won her maiden at Leicester in June over 12f and then she had not run since being beaten over 14f in Nottingham in July.  MARIA DI SCOZIA is by SELKIRK out of the HERNANDO mare VIVA MARIA, who is an unraced half sister to top-class sprinter POLISH PATRIOT. MARIA DI SCOZIA is VIVA MARIA’s second foal and she remains in training next year. Her half brother foal is by first season sire AD VALOREM and will sell from “St Simon Stud” at this year’s Tattersalls December Sales.

GR.2 WIN FOR TAM LIN
SELKIRK’s British-bred son TAM LIN won the Gr.2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont on Sunday.  This was adding to his previous Gr.3 Winter Hill Stakes win at Windsor in 2006 and two previous listed wins at Hamilton and Newbury. TAM LIN is a now five year old and he won this latest race in good style by four and quarter lengths.

HERNANDO NOW HAS FOUR FOR 2007
HERNANDO had his fourth individual 3yo winner of the year yesterday when the Aga Khan’s SHABAHAR won the mile maiden at Thurles. Out of a KAHYASI mare from the family of SHERGAR, SHABAHAR is bred to go further, so this win held out a lot of promise. Interestingly, all four of these 3yo winners for HERNANDO have scored at around 8 or 9 furlongs.

FORTY FOALS
Four new arrivals – two Lanwades mares, two boarders - have brought the total number of foals born at Lanwades so far this year to 40.

The earlier of the two boarding foalers was KARLIYNA, Ptarmigan Bloodstock’s stakes placed RAINBOW QUEST half-sister to Group 2 Doncaster Cup winner KASTHARI. She had a chesnut colt by PIVOTAL and now visits MEDICEAN.

Chris Mills’ MIDNIGHT SHIFT, dam of four winners from her first four foals, has a bay filly by GREEN DESERT, a half-sister to Group 3 winner MISS ANABAA. She now returns to CADEAUX GENEREUX, sire of her other good two sprinters MOVE IT (Timeform 107 rated and a winner in Hong Kong this year) and 112 rated Portland Handicap winner OUT AFTER DARK.

ENTENTE CORDIALE, dam of five winners from six runners including HERNANDO full-brothers multiple stakes winner FOREIGN AFFAIRS and 11 time scorer BIEN ENTENDU, has foaled a filly by Derby winner MOTIVATOR. She goes this year to DOMEDRIVER, sire of the fourth recent foal, a half-sister to six winners out of the BLUSHING GROOM mare CATCH, who will now visit WITH APPROVAL.

HERNANDO HAS DEBUT STAR
SONGE, a 3yo son of HERNANDO bred and raced by Alec Head, won on his debut at Saint-Cloud on Friday, bringing to three the number of individual 3yo winners his sire has had in France already this year. The first foal of a winning ANABAA daughter of the Head family’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner SILVERMINE, SONGE was reported in post-race comment on French racing channel Equidia as being the best 3yo in Criquette Head’s yard.

ALRUCCABA FAMILY DUO
Two more foals have arrived, both fillies tracing to ALRUCCABA. The first, a chesnut daughter of WITH APPROVAL, is out of ALL IS FAIR, a winning daughter of SELKIRK and ALLEGRA (NINISKI – ALRUCCABA). Already the dam of 2 winners, ALL IS FAIR now visits DOMEDRIVER, sire of her 2006 colt. The second filly is a bay by ROCK OF GIBRALTAR out of ALRUCCABA’s GREEN DESERT daughter ALABASTRINE. This is her third foal; her first is a NAYEF colt now aged two, named MAGISTRATE, and in training with Michael Jarvis, and her second a MONTJEU colt which realised 285,000 guineas at last year’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale. She now visits SELKIRK.

SUBLIME RESULT FOR SELKIRK
SUBLIMITY, a Listed stakes winner on the flat when trained by Sir Michael Stoute, became the first Cheltenham championship winner for his sire SELKIRK when coming home an easy winner in today's Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle. Now at the top of the hurdle tree, he was being quoted as short as 5/1 for next year's Champion Hurdle after his facile win.

SELKIRK’S EARLY STRIKE
SELKIRK, sire of no less than 15 individual Group or Stakes winners in 2006, has made an early start in his quest for similar success in 2007 with the win of his son BORDER MUSIC in the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes over seven furlongs at Wolverhampton. It was the ultra-consistent gelding’s seventh win in 32 starts (in which he has also run minor placings in a further 13) and a triumph for the Balding family as he is trained by Andrew, was bred by the trainer’s mother Emma and races in the black and yellow colours of the Balding family’s Kingsclere Stud.

HERNANDO DOUBLE
HERNANDO had a double on the opening day of 2007 at Deauville today with a colt and a filly who were both making their 3yo debuts. KARESUANDO, out of the SELKIRK mare HARBOUR ISLAND, and who had won a Longchamp maiden in October on his previous appearance, took the Prix Bacchus over 1900 metres (nine and a half furlongs) and LA HERNANDA, a daughter of the SHIRLEY HEIGHTS mare La Peregrina, also a winner last year at two, scored over the same trip in the Prix Nubienne.

FIVE FOALS
Five more foals to report, three colts and two fillies by five different sires.

Lanwades-bred winners AFFAIRE D’AMOUR and I DO each have fillies. AFFAIRE D’AMOUR’s, her third foal, is a chesnut by ORATORIO; I DO’s, also her third, is a grey by WITH APPROVAL. AFFAIRE D’AMOUR, a four-time winner and a HERNANDO full-sister to multiple stakes winner FOREIGN AFFAIRS, now visits ARAAFA. I DO, a dual juvenile winner from the family of RAINBOW QUEST, WARNING, et al, goes to DOMEDRIVER this year.

The third of the Lanwades-bred and owned foalers, SICARINA, another HERNANDO full-sister to a very useful runner in VINANDO, has a DOMEDRIVER this year, a colt full-brother to last year’s first foal filly. She visits WITH APPROVAL.

Two boarders to foal are the ‘Misses’ RIVIERA GOLF and ANABAA. John Pearce’s MISS RIVIERA GOLF, dam of two winners with her first two foals, has a DANEHILL DANCER full-brother to her 2yo of this year, MISS ST TROPEZ, who is in training with Geoff Wragg. She nows visits GALILEO. Chris Mills’ Group 3 winning sprinter MISS ANABAA has an OASIS DREAM colt third foal, a full-brother to the filly which realised 260,000 guineas at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal Sale. MISS ANABAA will be covered in 2007 by OASIS DREAM’s sire GREEN DESERT.

ANOTHER CLASSIC ARRIVAL
ALAKANANDA, dam of last year’s Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, produced a bay colt foal by leading sire INDIAN RIDGE this morning. In addition to DRAGON DANCER, ALAKANANDA, who is half-sister to World Champion ALBORADA and German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA, was also notable in 2006 as dam of the European record-priced yearling filly SADLER’S WELLS full-sister to the Derby runner-up, bought by Barbara Facchino of Barouche Stud for €2 million. Now named ALBAROUCHE, she is in training in Newmarket with Michael Jarvis. Between this pair ALAKANANDA produced AJAAN, a MACHIAVELLIAN colt who looks a highly promising 3yo prospect this year for the Niarchos Family and Henry Cecil after an impressive win on one of only two starts at two. ALAKANANDA, who has no yearling, now visits GALILEO.

FURTHER FOALS
Six further foals have arrived through the week, four of them by our own Breeders’ Cup Mile winner DOMEDRIVER, whose first runners we are looking forward to seeing out shortly.

Paul and Susan Roy’s MADAME MAXINE, a half-sister to last year’s leading first season sire in France, PANIS, has a brown DOMEDRIVER colt fourth foal. MADAME MAXINE, a four-time winner herself and whose first two foals are with Jeremy Noseda and Ed Dunlop respectively, now visits MEDICEAN.

The other three DOMEDRIVER’s are all Lanwades homebreds and all bay – a filly ex ETERNELLE and colts out of HOT TO TANGO and MISS PRISM. This is a third filly from as many foals for ETERNELLE, a winning GREEN DESERT half-sister to Germany champion CAITANO – her first pair are both fillies by HERNANDO and she revisits him.

HOT TO TANGO, owned in partnership with the Niarchos Family, is a winning KINGMAMBO mare out of a stakes winning DANZIG mare tracing to GREY FLIGHT. This is her second foal following a HERNANDO colt and she returns to DOMEDRIVER. MISS PRISM, already dam of three winners and another who traces to a major 20th century taproot (in her case SELENE) also remains at Lanwades, visiting WITH APPROVAL.

SLEW THE MOON is another Lanwades mare staying at home to be covered – after foaling a colt by HERNANDO yesterday she will return to him. A Grade 1 winner in her native Argentina, SLEW THE MOON traces to MRS PETERKIN, grandam of SHAREEF DANCER and MIZZEN MAST. Yesterday’s is her third foal; her first died unraced at two and her second, a COZZENE filly named LUZ DE LA LUNA, is in training in Ireland with Jim Bolger.

The most exciting of this week’s new arrivals though is the GALILEO grey filly first foal out of ALVARITA. A Listed stakes winner at Saint-Cloud at three in 2005, ALVARITA (by SELKIRK) is the only runner to date out of Lanwades-bred world champion ALBORADA, dual winner of the Champion Stakes and the top-rated filly in the world in 1998 over intermediate distances (see Lanwades news item 26 January for ALBORADA’s own foaling details). ALVARITA now visits HERNANDO.

Mr John Pearce’s stakes winning HERNANDO mare MISS CORNICHE has produced a bay filly by SELKIRK, a full-sister to the mare’s first foal 2yo MOYENNE CORNICHE, who has gone into training for her breeder with Geoff Wragg. Between this brother and sister MISS CORNICHE had a now yearling filly by DANEHILL DANCER, and she returns to that horse.

The other recent arrival was a brown or grey colt by NUMEROUS out of KALDOUNYA. A winner, and dam of a first foal winner last year in the USA, KALDOUNYA is half-sister (by KALDOUN ex MINYA, by BLUSHING GROOM) to ALTIERI, a son of SELKIRK who was champion older horse in Italy in 2004 following the second of his two wins in the Group 1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica. KALDOUNYA now visits HERNANDO.

ROSA DE MI CORAZON'S HATRICK
Lanwades homebred 3yo ROSA DE MI CORAZON maintained her unbeaten record with a gutsy win at Southwell yesterday, her third win in three starts. The half-sister to two time winner and dual stakes placed FLOR Y NATA is the second foal of ROSE OF ZOLLERN, winner of the Henkel Rennen, the German 1000 Guineas, and second in their Oaks, the Preis der Diana before being multiple Graded placed in the USA. ROSE OF ZOLLERN is out of a half-sister to Lanwades-bred European champion 2yo KALA DANCER, a son of Lanwades foundation sire NINISKI.

DOMEDRIVER FIRST CROP AT BREEZE-UP
Four 2yo’s from the first crop of DOMEDRIVER, two of them bred at Lanwades, are included in the line-up of 220 juveniles in the 2007 Doncaster Breeze-Up sale 4-5 April.

Solitary colt amongst them is the Lanwades-bred chesnut first foal of the winner CONDOLEEZZA, a €46,000 yearling, while the other Lanwades-bred is also a first foal, this one a daughter of the unraced SELKIRK mare KILBRIDE, a full-sister to 2006 stakes winner KISWAHILI from the family of NUREYEV and SADLER’S WELLS.

The two other fillies are a half-sister to stakes winner TERFEL and a half-sister to Group placed HECTOR’S GIRL from an outstanding speed family which includes MUMMY’S PET, PARSIMONY and COLLEGE CHAPEL.

FOAL IN KENTUCKY
Lanwades-bred and raced Group performer NADESZHDA has produced her first foal, a bay colt by PULPIT born this morning at Brookdale Farm in Kentucky. A daughter of NASHWAN, NADESZHDA won three races as a 3yo when trained by Sir Mark Prescott before taking an allowance and running 2nd in both the Grade 2 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita and the Listed Hermosa Handicap at Hollywood Park in a Californian career with Neil Drysdale foreshortened through injury. She now visits MARIA’S MON.

PULPIT, sire of her first foal, is a dual Grade 2 winning son of A P INDY and one of the leading young sires in the US, earnings of more than $22 million from his first six crops justifying a fee of $80,000 this year at Claiborne Farm.

NADESZHDA’s dam, Italian stakes winner and Lancashire Oaks placed NINOTCHKA, is among the mares at Lanwades, due this year to WITH APPROVAL and visiting HAAFHD.

EVEN SCORE
The count of foals born at Lanwades in 2007 has now reached 20 with five foals, four of them colts, over as many days.

Lanwades-bred half-sisters ROBE CHINOISE and KILBRIDE, two of the four to produce colts, foaled on consecutive days, the former a chesnut by SELKIRK, the latter, who is by SELKIRK, a chesnut or grey by WITH APPROVAL. This is a second foal, and second chesnut colt, for ROBE CHINOISE, who revisits the same horse. KILBRIDE, whose first foal DOMEDRIVER yearling filly sells in April’s Doncaster Breeze-Up sale, and who has also a DOMEDRIVER yearling colt, visits AUSSIE RULES.

KILBRIDE and ROBE CHINOISE are full and half-sisters respectively to KISWAHILI, a Lanwades homebred stakes winner last year (and who visits LANGFUHR in 2007) out of high-class NINISKI mare KILINISKI from the immediate family of NUREYEV and SADLER’S WELLS.

Two of the other foalers are boarders – Professor Carlsoo’s Danish Oaks winner HERTHA, by HERNANDO, who has already had a winner in 2007 with her 3yo MEDICEAN filly CAREFREE, a grey filly by WITH APPROVAL; Mr John Pearce’s MISS AMANPURI, a half-sister to high-class colts ASIAN HEIGHTS (by HERNANDO) and ST EXPEDIT, a bay colt by TIGER HILL.

NEW ARRIVALS
Three new arrivals, two colts and a filly, bring this year’s tally so far to 15. The filly is a lovely grey by MEDICEAN, a third foal for the Lanwades-bred COZZENE mare CONDOLEEZZA, a winning daughter and the only foal of the Listed winner ROSABELLA, herself a daughter of NINISKI and Italian 1000 Guineas winner and Oaks runner-up ROSANANTI. CONDOLEEZZA’s first two foals are a 2YO colt by DOMEDRIVER which goes to this year’s Breeze-Up sales and a yearling full-sister which is being retained by Lanwades; she visits DANSILI.

SHIMMERING SEA has a HERNANDO bay colt, a three-quarter brother to the colt by the same sire out of SHIMMERING SEA’s daughter STORMY WEATHER which was foal number two at Lanwades in 2007. He is also, more importantly, a three-quarter brother to the classy HERNANDO fillies out of another of SHIMMERING SEA’s daughters, SUMMER NIGHT – SONGERIE, winner of the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs at two and Group placed, including when fourth in the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes, at three, and SOUVENANCE, third at Gr.1 level in the Italian Oaks in 2006 and remaining in training in 2007 with Sir Mark Prescott, who also has the pair’s 2YO half-sister by OASIS DREAM, STARLIT SANDS. LANWADES CLEAR TOP BREEDERS
Lanwades Stud has soared to the top of the table of British-based National Hunt breeders after a Graded race hurdle double at the weekend by horses bred at the stud.

In Ireland, CONVINCING showed himself to be the toughest juvenile hurdler about when taking his record over hurdles to three from four with his hard-fought win in testing ground in the Grade 2 Cashmans Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown. His SELKIRK full-sister HEAT OF THE MOMENT is still at Lanwades, due to be covered this year by WITH APPROVAL, while his stakes winning half-sister HEAT OF THE NIGHT, still-Lanwades owned also, is in Kentucky visiting STORMY ATLANTIC. With LIBERATE also amongst the very top rated juvenile hurdlers this season, and also Triumph Hurdle bound despite not having run since December, Lanwades can lay claim to two of the very top 4yo hurdlers in the British Isles. Incidentally ETERNELLE, LIBERATE’s winning half-sister still in the Lanwades broodmare band, has a HERNANDO first foal 2yo filly gone into training in France with Carlos Laffon-Parias, a yearling filly also by HERNANDO and revisits him this year.

Lanwades-bred 5yo HEATHCOTE, whose dam CHERE AMIE is now in Japan, having been sold in the Lanwades consignment at the 2003 Tattersalls December Sale, won one of the biggest purses in hurdle racing when he collected over £85,000 for his win in the Grade 3 Totesport Trophy at Newbury. He is now the winner of four races over hurdles. With HERNANDO’s 6yo son DE SOTO among the best novice hurdlers as well, Lanwades looks like being a big presence amongst hurdlers at the top level for the rest of the season.

FOAL COUNT HITS ONE DOZEN
The two latest arrivals have brought to 12 the number of foals on the ground at Lanwades in 2007, and coincidentally the pair, both fillies, represent the two best families developed at Plantation Stud by the late Lord Howard de Walden.

LA PERSIANA, a DAYLAMI half-sister to Lord Howard de Walden’s European 2yo champion GRAND LODGE, produced a bay first foal by ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. A dual Listed winner and twice Group 3 runner-up in the colours of her still owner Lady Howard de Walden, LA PERSIANA will now visit PEINTRE CELEBRE.

SPRY, sold by Lady Howard de Walden in the Lanwades draft at last year’s Newmarket December Sale, and still a boarder at Lanwades, though now in the ownership of David Oldrey and George Hartigan, has a chesnut filly by NAYEF. A daughter of SANDY ISLAND, Lancashire Oaks winning three-quarter sister to Lord Howard de Walden’s runaway Derby winner SLIP ANCHOR, and already dam of a five-time winner with her first foal, and who has 2yo (STOW) and 3yo (BAJAN PRIDE) colts by SELKIRK to run for her this year, SPRY visits CACIQUE.

FURTHER FOALS
Two further filly foals arrived overnight on Wednesday, bringing to 10 the number born so far this year at the stud.

OBLIGE, a Lanwades-bred ROBELLINO mare from the family of RAINBOW QUEST and WARNING, produced a bay filly by the Aga Khan’s Prix du Jockey Club and Arc winner DALAKHANI. This is the second foal for OBLIGE, a dual winner at 2 and stakes placed twice at 3, and whose first foal, a now 2yo colt by SELKIRK, is in training with Mark Johnston. She returns to SELKIRK.

The other filly, a bay from the first crop of ORATORIO is also the first foal born to EYEQ, a CADEAUX GENEREUX mare who was champion older mare in Scandinavia in 2004 after winning the Group 3 Fahrhofer Stutenpreis over a mile in Hamburg. The filly, bred by Mr and Mrs Bernt Dahl’s Light Valley Stud, carries four crosses of ALMAHMOUD, two through ORATORIO’S sire DANEHILL (inbred 3 X 3 to NATALMA) and two through EYEQ’s dam SANS PRIX, who has both NATALMA and her half-sister COSMAH in her pedigree.

BOARDERS FOAL
BLUE OASIS, the second Ptarmigan Bloodstock-owned mare to foal already in 2007, has produced a bay colt by PIVOTAL. A stakes placed SADLER’S WELLS full-sister to Listed winners STAGE CALL and HUMILIS, and closely related to 1994 European Champion 3yo, Oaks and Irish Derby winner BALANCHINE, BLUE OASIS now visits GREEN DESERT. Her PIVOTAL colt is her second foal – the first, a colt from the second crop of DALAKHANI, brought 120,000 guineas when sold in the Lanwades/St Simon Stud draft at the 2006 Tattersalls December Foal sale.

Another boarding mare to foal is Lady Howard de Walden’s ELUDE, an unraced half-sister by Lord Howard de Walden’s runaway Derby winner SLIP ANCHOR to Group 2 winners PRISMATIC and PERPENDICULAR out of a half-sister to KRIS and DIESIS. She has a lovely bay colt by Lanwades sire SELKIRK (a full-brother to her winning daughter BAFFLE) and now visits BEAT HOLLOW.

FIRST APPROVAL
The first foal to be born at Lanwades by our newest stallion recruit, WITH APPROVAL, has arrived. The filly, born on Friday, and who shares her grey coat with both her parents, is out of BALLYMAC GIRL, a five-time winning daughter of NINISKI and ALRUCCABA. She is a half-sister to the good-class 10 furlong handicapper (Timeform 106) and hurdler COAT OF HONOUR. BALLYMAC GIRL, the second member of the ALRUCCABA tribe to foal at Lanwades in 2007 after ALBORADA, visits DOMEDRIVER.

Earlier that same morning Ptarmigan Bloodstock’s boarding mare COMPOSE, an ANABAA daughter of Lancashire Oaks runner-up TOTALITY, who is herself full-sister to dual Derby winner COMMANDER IN CHIEF and half-sister to dual European champion WARNING, produced her first foal, a bay colt by DUBAI DESTINATION. She visits DIKTAT.

ALBORADA FOALS
Lanwades World Champion ALBORADA produced her fifth foal, and fourth filly, yesterday, a bay or grey daughter of leading sire MONTJEU.

ALBORADA’s first foal, the unraced DANZIG colt ALADO, is at stud in South Africa where his first foals were born to SH time in 2006; her second, the stakes winning (Prix Petite Etoile at Saint-Cloud) SELKIRK mare ALVARITA, is back at Lanwades and due to foal for the first time this year – to another leading son of SADLER’S WELLS in GALILEO; her third foal is a daughter of SADLER’S WELLS himself, the as yet unraced 3yo ALTA MODA and her fourth a HERNANDO 2yo filly called ALMAMIA and both of those are in training with Sir Mark Prescott, who produced ALBORADA herself to win back-to-back Champion Stakes in 1998 and 1999.

ALBORADA and ALVARITA both stay at Lanwades to be covered, the former by SELKIRK, her daughter by HERNANDO. ALBORADA's own-sister, Triple Group 1 winner and German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA, is also at Lanwades where she is expecting her second foal by SELKIRK this year. Her first is a yearling filly by SADLER'S WELLS.

ONE DAY – TWO FOALS
The second and third foals of 2007 arrived here at Lanwades on Monday 22 – colts by HERNANDO and LINAMIX.

First to arrive was the HERNANDO second foal of STORMY WEATHER. Though unraced herself, STORMY WEATHER is half-sister to SEA DANE (winner of the Listed Chipchase Stakes here before export to Scandinavia, where he won eight times and became champion sprinter in 1999), and full-sister to SUMMER NIGHT, dam of Group 3 winner SONGERIE and Classic-placed SOUVENANCE, to which pair, since they are both by HERNANDO, this colt is a full-brother in blood. STORMY WEATHER’s first foal is the 2yo DOMEDRIVER colt SHAKEDOWN, in training with Alan Swinbank. She returns to HERNANDO.

MITRAILLETTE, a 2yo winning daughter of MISWAKI and the Grade 2 Orchid Handicap winner CROCKADORE, produced a grey (what else?) colt by LINAMIX, her first foal. She stays at Lanwades also, visiting SELKIRK.

WITH APPROVAL DAMSIRE OF CHAMPION
WITH APPROVAL, whose daughters’ progeny’s excellent year saw him reach number six on the US Broodmare Sire List in 2006, above the likes of STORM CAT, SECRETARIAT, MISWAKI and AFFIRMED, had his status as a broodmare sire of significance confirmed by the Eclipse Award received by MIESQUE’S APPROVAL. A son of MIESQUE’S SON and the minor-winning WIN APPROVAL, MIESQUE’S APPROVAL was a revelation in 2006, winning five or his seven starts, culminating with a clear-cut success in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, a record which saw him crowned Champion Turf Male of 2006.

FIRST FOAL FOR 2007
CARENAGE, who has been first to foal amongst the Lanwades mares for each of the last two seasons, brought up the hat-trick last night when producing a bay filly by Lanwades sire HERNANDO. A winning daughter of ALZAO out of Yorkshire Oaks winner KEY CHANGE, from the family of Derby winner KAHYASI and St Leger winner MILAN, CARENAGE now has the super-enviable high-fertility record of three January produce with her first three foals. CARIBANA, the first of them and a full-sister to yesterday’s foal, is a 2yo who goes into training with Michael Jarvis shortly, and in-between she had a colt, now yearling, by DOMEDRIVER. She returns to HERNANDO.

TWO LANWADES-BRED WINNERS BY SELKIRK
The Lanwades good run of three year old fillies winning continued yesterday when FAIRNILEE won her maiden at Kempton on her second lifetime start. FAIRNILEE is by SELKIRK out of FANTASTIC BELLE and maintained the dam's 100% record of runners to winners. FANTASTIC BELLE was actually sold by Lanwades at the 2006 December Sales to Count and Countess von Stauffenberg, but Lanwades retain not only FAIRNILEE but also her two year old half sister FANDANGERINA (by HERNANDO) who like FAIRNILEE is in training with Sir Mark Prescott. The 2006 DOMEDRIVER colt heads to the Tattersalls February Sales next month.

The second winner of the weekend was Lanwades-bred CONVINCING who won a Grade 3 Juvenile Hurdle at Punchestown. He is a four year old by SELKIRK out of HOT THONG and has won a total of two wins on the flat and now two wins from three starts over hurdles and joins LIBERATE as a Lanwades-bred top juvenile hurdler. His sisters HEAT OF THE NIGHT (Listed winner) and HEAT OF THE MOMENT (unraced) both join the Lanwades broodmare band this year and visit STORMY ATLANTIC (in Ky) and WITH APPROVAL, respectively. Their dam HOT THONG was a Group 3 winner in Brazil.

THE GOOD START CONTINUES
The good run of Lanwades-bred 3yo fillies in 2007 continued yesterday with SOFT MORNING’s easy maiden win at Wolverhampton. The fourth foal of the NASHWAN mare SUMMER NIGHT, SOFT MORNING (by PIVOTAL) kept her dam’s record intact by becoming her fourth winner. SUMMER NIGHT’s second and third foals are the high-class HERNANDO full-sisters SONGERIE and SOUVENANCE. The former, winner of the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs at two, is a maiden visiting ARCH in 2007 while her Prix des Reservoirs and Italian Oaks placed sister stays in training at 4 this year.

SUMMER NIGHT, who has a 2yo DOMEDRIVER filly, SOURIRE, in training with Sir Mark Prescott (who has handled all three of her half-sisters) and a yearling colt by FALBRAV who will be sold in the Staffordstown consignment at one of this year’s major yearling sales, was not covered in 2006 but travels to Kentucky with her daughter to visit leading US sire MR GREELEY.

Also at Lanwades is SUMMER NIGHT’s dam SHIMMERING SEA, Group-placed at two in Ireland, dam already of six winners, due to HERNANDO in 2007 and visiting SHIROCCO. Her OASIS DREAM 2yo daughter STARLIT SANDS has been retained and is in training with Mark Johnston. SUMMER NIGHT’s full-sister STORMY WEATHER, whose 2yo DOMEDRIVER colt first foal is in training with Alan Swinbank, is also due to HERNANDO and returns to him.

ROSA DE MI CORAZON WINS FIRST TIME OUT
Lanwades-bred and owned ROSA DE MI CORAZON got off to a good start when winning first time out at Southwell yesterday. This recently turned three year old filly although running a bit green still managed a winning debut. She is the second foal of Classic-winner (German 1,000 Gns) ROSE OF ZOLLERN and is trained by Sir Mark Prescott as is her half sister the stakes-placed dual winner FLOR Y NATA (by FUSAICHI PEGASUS) who remains in training in 2007 as a four year old. ROSE OF ZOLLERN has a yearling colt by WAR CHANT who was purchased by Corduff Stud at the Keeneland November Sales in 2006, she is due to FUSAICHI PEGASUS in 2007 and visits KINGMAMBO.

FIRST WINNER OF 2007
At just turned three CAREFREE becomes Lanwades first winner of the year after scoring at Southwell on 2nd January. This filly by MEDICEAN ex a Danish Oaks winning daughter of HERNANDO, HERTHA, was bred by Professor Carlsoo and born at Lanwades as was her mother. In her previous start she had been well beaten by Lanwades-bred and owned ALGARADE. CAREFREE's half brother by DOMEDRIVER is currently at Staffordstown being prepared for the sales later in the year.

DE SOTO POTENTIAL STAR
Lanwades-bred HERNANDO six-year-old DE SOTO looks to be a potential star recruit to hurdling ranks after two impressive novice wins in December. The son of the winning LAHIB mare VANESSA BELL from the family of Lanwades champions ALBORADA and ALBANOVA has been lightly raced since finishing a close second in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in March 2005 on only his second racecourse appearance. Now, with wide-margin successes at Taunton and Kempton he has put himself right in the picture for one of the big championship novice events at this year’s Cheltenham festival, where he could perhaps emulate the 2005 Royal and Sun Alliance Hurdle win of one of HERNANDO’s other National Hunt stars, NO REFUGE.

WORLDLY A HOLLYWOOD STAR
WORLDLY, a 3yo son of SELKIRK bred and owned by Chris Wright, took his overall record to four wins in six starts, and kept his strike rate since being exported to the US at a perfect 100 per cent – three from three – when winning the Grade 3 Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park on Saturday. He was adding the nine furlong Cinema to his one mile Will Rogers Handicap win at the same track last month, completing a double which for old-style cowboy movie fans would have seemed a given, but which has actually not been achieved since 1996.

The versatile WORLDLY, whose three US runs have all been on grass, set a new track record when breaking his maiden on the Wolverhampton polytrack last August.

Another winner over the weekend for SELKIRK was the Lanwades-raised and Matthews Breeding and Racing Ltd –bred COME WHAT MAY, a 3yo full-sister to the high-class, but ill-fated Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner ETLAALA, who scored over five furlongs at Newmarket.

HERON WINGS IN
HERON BAY became the 18th individual 3yo winner this season for his sire HERNANDO when showing great courage to regain the lead after being headed to win the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday. The Gordon Stakes and then the St Leger is now the plan for this progressive colt bred by Car Colston Hall Stud.

Earlier yesterday COPERNICAN became the second HERNANDO 3yo this week to score a hat-trick, his Ripon win, his third in 14 days, coming just two days after French filly SUMAROCCA posted her third win, all three of which have been at Longchamp.

STARLIT BRIGHT
Lanwades homebred STARLIT SANDS (OASIS DREAM – SHIMMERING SEA) ran a great race to finish second yesterday in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, leading from the start until about 30 yards from the line where she was reeled in by the half-length winner ELLETELLE. She is the seventh winner and second black type performer for her dam, who sadly died this spring, but for whom STARLIT SANDS will, in time, be a more than adequate replacement. See News of 21 May for further pedigree details.

SUPERMODELS AT STAFFORDSTOWN
Irish supermodel Jasmine Guinness and Lanwades star Sadler’s Wells – Albanova yearling filly (currently resident in Ireland at Staffordstown) star together in a photo to publicise the 2007 Goffs Million Yearling Sale. The human model may not be gracing the ring at Goffs in October, but our grey daughter of Albanova certainly will, and she is certain to be amongst the most sought-after lots on offer; not only is she the first foal of a three-time Group 1 winner and German Horse of the Year, she is also a close relative (3/4 sister) to last year’s Goffs Million sales topper, the €2 million Sadler’s Wells – Alakananda filly who was also Europe’s highest-priced yearling of 2006.

HERNANDO 3YO’S KEEP ON WINNING
The winning streak of HERNANDO’s 3yo’s continues, particularly in France, with CAPTAIN ALATRICE’s win there over the weekend bringing to 14 the number of individual 3yo winners for him this year. Also in France on Saturday LA HERNANDA, a winner twice already this year, went within a nose of Pattern success when she was edged out of the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont for 3yo fillies at Chantilly on French Derby weekend.

SKY THE LIMIT?
Lanwades homebred STARLIT SANDS, SHIMMERING SEA’S daughter by OASIS DREAM (see News 21 May) booked her place in the line-up of the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot by leading all the way at Catterick on Friday, bringing her record to two from two. BLYTHE KNIGHT GETS IT ALRIGHT ON THE DAY
SELKIRK’s son BLYTHE KNIGHT, a good handicapper for Ed Dunlop when raced as a younger horse by his breeder Gainsborough Stud, and a Listed winner last time out, bridged the gap to Group class with his win in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes on Derby Day. Durable and versatile, and in that respect very typical of the stock of his sire, BLYTHE KNIGHT, now a seven-year-old, is also much improved since joining the Malton sable of John Quinn, for whom he has also won the Lincoln Handicap (run last year at Redcar) and a Grade 2 Hurdle at Aintree.

HERNANDO HITS HEIGHTS
DE SOTO, HERNANDO’s high-class hurdler son, brought the second highest price in the history of Doncaster Bloodstock Sales when selling for 360,000 guineas at the DBS Spring Sale last week. The 6yo, bought by Jonjo O’Neill on behalf of Gay Smith, was also bred at Lanwades, and comes from the family of disqualified Oaks winner ALIYSA and 2003 champion 3yo ALAMSHAR, a branch of the MUMTAZ MAHAL family closely related to Lanwades’ outstanding taproot mare ALRUCCABA.

Meanwhile HERNANDO, whose 4yo daughter SOUVENANCE has scored two wide-margin wins in conditions races in Ireland in the past fortnight, continues to chalk up winners from his 3yo crop, wins by HANDO and ANTHOLOGIE in France over the past week bringing to 11 his tally of individual 3yo winners in 2007.

ALLEGRETTO ANOTHER FOR ALRUCCABA
ALLEGRETTO, winner of the Gr 2 Lancashire Oaks and third in the Gr 1 Yorkshire Oaks last season, posted yet another Pattern win for the ALRUCCABA family when showing great determination to take the Gr 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown last night. ALLEGRETTO is the first foal of Gr 3 Doncaster Cup winner ALLELUIA, whose second and third produce, both fillies, are in training in Newmarket with Sir Mark Prescott (ALLEVIATE) and James Fanshawe (ALVEE, a 900,000 guineas yearling by KEY OF LUCK) respectively.

DOMEDRIVER HAS SECOND WINNER AND 50% STRIKE RATE
DOMEDRIVER posted his second winner, from just four runners, when ALCA DRIVER won on his debut in Italy today, scoring by two lengths in a newcomers’ race over 1400 metres (7 furlongs) in Rome.

ALCA DRIVER was bred by Razza Spighe d’Oro, having been in utero when his dam LA LEGERE was purchased from Petra Bloodstock, through the Haras de la Louviere consignment, at the 2004 Deauville December Sale.

With DOME ROCK having run a promising close-up sixth on his debut for Luca Cumani last week, DOMEDRIVER has made an excellent start overall with his early runners.

GOOD WEEKEND ON THE TRACK
A good weekend on the track on both sides of the Atlantic for Lanwades-bred horses and those with Lanwades connections. Firstly, here at Thirsk, STARLIT SANDS made all to win a five furlong 2yo maiden, providing her owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing and her trainer Sir Mark Prescott a debut double with their only juvenile runners of the season to date.

STARLIT SANDS is the seventh winner from eight runners for her dam SHIMMERING SEA, a SLIP ANCHOR half-sister to Lanwades-bred King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner PETOSKI. SHIMMERING SEA’s six previous winners are by six different sires, horses as diverse as DANEHILL (SEA DANE, Champion sprinter in Scandinavia), NASHWAN (SUMMER NIGHT, a 3yo winner over six furlongs and dam of the high-class HERNANDO sisters SONGERIE and SOUVENANCE) and SADLER’S WELLS (SOUTH ATLANTIC, a Timeform 105-rated dual mile winner here subsequently successful also in South Africa). Surprisingly for a mare bred as she is, only the miler SOUTH ATLANTIC, of all SHIMMERING SEA’s winners, has scored at a distance beyond seven furlongs – but then she had the speed herself to win first time out over five furlongs (and again over seven) at two!

Intriguingly, SHIMMERING SEA herself was SLIP ANCHOR’s first-ever winner and she in turn has provided stallions LAMMTARRA (LUMINANT) and now OASIS DREAM with their first winners. SHIMMERING SEA sadly died earlier this spring but leaves behind a top-class colt foal by HERNANDO, closely related to Gr.1 winner PETOSKI and Gr.3 winner SONGERIE. She remains represented at Lanwades by daughters SUMMER NIGHT (in foal to MR GREELEY) and STORMY WEATHER (in foal to HERNANDO) as well as granddaughter SONGERIE (in foal to ARCH).

On Saturday in America, SELKIRK 3yo WORLDLY, a 2yo winner here for Sylvester Kirk, kept his US record intact (two out of two) with a comfortable win in the one mile Grade 3 Will Rogers Handicap on the Hollywood Park grass track. He is stakes winner number 64 for his sire. Then yesterday on the East Coast PRINCESS JANIE, a half-sister to recent Lanwades broodmare acquisition RYELLA brought her record to two wins in three starts when breaking 1.10 for six furlongs in winning the Listed Just Smashing Stakes at Monmouth Park. Petite Princess, dam of RYELLA and PRINCESS JANIE, is a Group-placed half-sister by DAYJUR to Middle Park Stakes scorer and new Coolmore sire AD VALOREM.

DOMEDRIVER FILLY SELLS WELL
NANIGATA, a first-crop daughter of DOMEDRIVER, brought the second highest price by a filly, and fourth top price of the sale overall, when selling for €61,000 at last Friday’s BBAG German Breeze-up sale at Baden-Baden. The chesnut daughter of the stakes-placed SELKIRK mare SUSI WONG from the family of champion filly DANCE DESIGN was bought to stay in Germany by BBA Germany.

BLYTHE KNIGHT IN DESERVED STAKES SUCCESS
BLYTHE KNIGHT became black type stakes winner number 63 for SELKIRK with his deserved win in the Listed Hambleton Stakes at York yesterday. The seven year old, who has successfully combined hurdling with flat racing recently, winning a Grade 2 event at Aintree last month, has run consistently well in big handicaps over several seasons with little success. His wins, which included scores in the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom as a 4yo and in the Lincoln at Redcar last year, numbered just four before yesterday. But his ability and his willingness can be gauged from his prize money haul over that period, which now stands at over £228,000. His reported longer term target is next year’s Champion Hurdle, a race won this year by another son of SELKIRK in SUBLIMITY.

SOUVENANCE SCORES
Win number seven in 2007 for horses bred at Lanwades Stud and trained at Heath House stables was posted last night in Killarney when SOUVENANCE, running in the Kirsten Rausing colours and trained by Sir Mark Prescott, was an easy winner of a conditions race on her seasonal debut. SOUVENANCE follows ROSA DE MI CORAZON (3), FAIRNILEE, SOFT MORNING (SOUVENANCE’s half-sister) and ALIZADORA as the fifth filly to win for the team this year.

SOUVENANCE was a busy traveller last year, running in six different countries in consecutive stakes races and placing in five of them, including when third in the Italian Oaks. All going well, after another possible run in Ireland, the daughter of HERNANDO and the increasingly influential-looking matron SUMMER NIGHT will have a similar campaign in 2007.

HERNANDO NOW NINE UP
HERNANDO now has nine individual 3yo winners to his name in 2007 after a double by two of his sons in France at the weekend, LOS NADIS winning on Sunday after PEKOS RUN had gone in on Saturday. Also on Sunday his 3yo daughter LA HERNANDA, a winner twice already in Paris this season, ran a good race to finish 4th in the Listed Prix de la Seine on Guineas day at Longchamp.

LAST FOAL ARRIVES
The final foal of the season has been born at Lanwades, a filly by WITH APPROVAL out of NINOTCHKA. The bay is a half-sister to the Group placed pair NATALIYA (3rd Fred Darling Stakes, died at 3) and NADESZHDA (2nd Santa Barbara H., had first foal, a colt by PULPIT, this year).

NINOTCHKA, a daughter of NIJINSKY and a Listed winner in Italy and Group 3 third in Britain in both the Lancashire Oaks and the Princess Royal Stakes, is out of PUGET SOUND, a half-sister to a former Lanwades broodmare in Lingfield Oaks Trial winner and Yorkshire Oaks runner-up KILINISKI. Their dam KILAVEA was half-sister to NUREYEV. Yesterday’s Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner ARCHIPENKO is out of another half-sister to NUREYEV in BOUND, who, since she is also a daughter of NIJINSKY, is a close genetic relative to NINOTCHKA.

2YO WINNER NUMBER ONE
ALIZADORA became the first Lanwades-bred 2yo winner of 2007 on Friday when she led all the way to win a five furlong maiden at Nottingham on her debut in the Kirsten Rausing green and white hooped colours. The homebred daughter of ZILZAL, who was also a first winner of the turf season for her trainer Sir Mark Prescott, is out of BALLYMAC GIRL, whose previous best runner has been the Timeform 106-rated COAT OF HONOUR. This is very much Lanwades blood, as not only did ZILZAL stand here, but BALLYMAC GIRL is by Lanwades sire NINISKI out of Lanwades’ great foundation mare ALRUCCABA.

PAT OR ELSE, an ALZAO half-sister to classic and dual Group 1 winners MY EMMA and CLASSIC CLICHÉ, has foaled a filly by DOMEDRIVER, a full-sister to PATRONNE, her foal of 2006. Originally a permanent boarder at Lanwades when owned by Matthews Breeding and Racing Ltd, and now part of the Lanwades broodmare band, PAT OR ELSE has produced four winners from her first five foals, including Timeform 96 rated TRAFALGAR SQUARE. Her sixth living foal is the 2yo HAWK WING filly TRISKEL, in training in Ireland with Tommy Stack. She now visits WITH APPROVAL.

DOMEDRIVER OFF THE MARK WITH ONLY 2ND RUNNER
DOMEDRIVER sired his first winner when RACE DRIVER scored on his debut on Sunday over 1100 metres (five and a half furlongs) at Angers in France. She is only the 2nd progeny of her sire to race so far. Homebred by Lady Chryss O’Reilly’s Skymarc Farm, RACE DRIVER is the second foal of the PIVOTAL mare REMEDY, following the once-raced 3yo MEDICEAN filly REDEEMABLE. Cheveley Park Stud bred REMEDY is a half-sister to ON CALL, who won a number of races in the colours of Lady O’Reilly, and from the family of VERGLAS, winner of the Coventry Stakes and runner-up in the Irish 2000 Guineas in the same black and white hooped colours.

HERNANDO HALF DOZEN
HERNANDO’s tally of three-year-old winners for 2007 has risen to six with the wins of two of his daughters in France. SUMAROCCA won a competitive 2000 metre race at Longchamp and then SHIPPAWA, bred like HERNANDO himself by the Niarchos Family, made a winning debut in a good maiden at Nantes. With LA HERNANDA scoring again at Saint-Cloud between times to take her 2007 record to two wins and a second from three starts, the French-trained fillies in particular by HERNANDO are starting the season off in style.

In Kentucky, ROSE OF ZOLLERN has produced a filly by FUSAICHI PEGASUS, a full-sister to dual stakes placed FLOR Y NATA and half-sister to unbeaten three-time winner ROSA DE MI CORAZON. She now visits KINGMAMBO.

Back at Lanwades there have been DOMEDRIVER fillies for ALTER EGO (who now visits WITH APPROVAL) and SIRENA, a HERNANDO filly for AKDARIYA, who returns to HERNANDO, and colts by HERNANDO for Mr John Pearce’s MISS KATMANDU (a ¾ brother to ASIAN HEIGHTS), THUNDER QUEEN and SUPERSTORE, both of whom now visit DOMEDRIVER.

Lanwades mares COMMON REQUEST and SULITELMA, have also both foaled to resident sires, the former a bay colt by SELKIRK, the latter a grey filly by WITH APPROVAL. Chris Mills’ MILLYANT foaled a bay colt by OASIS DREAM earlier in the month and returns to the same horse.

Latest arrival at Lanwades is a bay filly by DUBAWI out of ALRUCCABA’s four-time winning NASHWAN daughter ALEXANDRINE. ALEXANDRINE’s first two foals were both winners for Sir Mark Prescott in 2006, 3yo ALAMBIC (by COZZENE) six times, 2yo ALGARADE (by GREEN DESERT) from only two starts. She has a 2yo colt, ASTRODOME, by DOMEDRIVER, in training with Sir Mark Prescott and a yearling colt by HERNANDO.

2004 Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE, a Group 1 placed stakes winner herself and dam of world champion three-year-old filly, dual Champion Stakes (Gr.1) winner ALBORADA and German Horse of the Year 2004, treble Gr.1 winner ALBANOVA (and grandam already of a stakes winner through ALBORADA’s Prix Petite Etoile-winning daughter ALVARITA), foaled a grey colt by resident champion sire SELKIRK. ALBANOVA’s SECOND FOAL
ALBANOVA, Lanwades-bred and raced 2004 German Horse of the Year and Champion Older mare, winner of three consecutive Group 1 races, has produced her second foal, a bay/grey colt by resident champion sire SELKIRK. Her first foal was a grey filly by SADLER’S WELLS.

ALBANOVA won seven of her 11 starts, including all three of her outings in her final season, when three separate trips to Germany resulted in three Group 1 trophies.

ALBANOVA, who is a grand-daughter of Lanwades wonderful taproot mare ALRUCCABA, a daughter of 2004 TBA Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE, and a full-sister (by ALZAO) to Lanwades’ other champion mare, 1998 world top-rated filly and dual Champion Stakes winner ALBORADA. And this year she will visit another of Lanwades' resident stallions HERNANDO.

SCANDALETTE FOALS
SCANDALETTE, dam of the super-tough GATEMAN (winner of 11 races and over £450,000) and also of Royal Hunt Cup winner SURPRISE ENCOUNTER has foaled a chestnut filly by Lanwades Champion Sire SELKIRK. SCANDALETTE has a two year old filly by OASIS DREAM named LADY JANE DIGBY in training with Mark Johnston, a yearling filly by DOMEDRIVER named DESIREE CLARY and will now visit INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

ALLELUIA FOALS IN IRELAND
ALLELUIA bred in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and Sonia Rogers has foaled a bay/grey filly by DALAKHANI at Airlie Stud. This is the fifth foal of ALLELUIA who herself had a Timeform rating of 117 and was the winner of six races including the Gr.3 Doncaster Cup. ALLELUIA is the dam of Cheveley Park Stud owned, Sir Michael Stoute trained Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks winner ALLEGRETTO, a three year old filly named ALLEVIATE in training with Sir Mark Prescott, a KEY OF LUCK two year old filly named ALVEE who was sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales realising 900,000 gns and is now in training with James Fanshawe, a yearling colt by INDIAN RIDGE and she goes back to ALLEGRETTO’s sire GALILEO in 2007

LANWADES FAMILIES IN 2YO MAIDEN WINS
Two recent juvenile winners have close Lanwades connections. DR FAUSTUS, who won a mile maiden at Thirsk, is out of REQUESTING, a RAINBOW QUEST daughter of ALRUCCABA sold as a yearling and who never ran but has now bred three winners from four foals of racing age.

The second winner was MYSTERY SAIL, a Juddmonte homebred daughter of MIZZEN MAST who is half-sister to Lanwades resident mare COMMON REQUEST. A 3yo winner herself in France, COMMON REQUEST has a first foal yearling colt by DOMEDRIVER and a colt foal by SELKIRK who sells in the Lanwades draft at this year’s Tattersalls December Sale. She is now in foal to WITH APPROVAL.

STAKES DOUBLE FOR LANWADES AND HERNANDO
SOUVENANCE, previously placed at Group 1 level in Italy, Group 2 level in Germany, Group 3 level in France and Listed level in Ireland and Sweden, finally gained a deserved black type win when leading virtually all the way in the Kirsten Rausing colours to win the Listed Euroselect-Preis in Koln yesterday.

The 4yo became the 29th individual stakes winner for HERNANDO and the second for her dam SUMMER NIGHT, already dam of SOUVENANCE’s Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs-winning full-sister SONGERIE. SUMMER NIGHT is herself half-sister to recent Group 3 winner STARLIT SANDS.

SOUVENANCE’s win completed a double for horses bred and raised at Lanwades after HOTEL DU CAP, owned and bred by long-time Lanwades supporter John Pearce, had surprised the hot favourite, July Cup third ASSET, in the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup at Newbury on Saturday

HOTEL DU CAP’s dam MISS RIVIERA GOLF, a daughter of HERNANDO, is one of eight broodmares currently owned by Mr Pearce, all of which are boarded at Lanwades. She has a SELKIRK yearling colt and a DANEHILL DANCER colt foal and is foal to GALILEO.

BOLD GLANCE LATEST ALRUCCABA DESCENDANT TO SHINE
It was only a Pontefract maiden, but everyone has to start somewhere, and its winner can now be described as unbeaten after he, BOLD GLANCE, scored on his belated debut yesterday, getting on top of his odds-on stablemate ABYDOS inside the final furlong to score a half length win in the second Godolphin colours in the 10 furlong event.

A 1,250,000 guineas yearling, BOLD GLANCE, a son of KINGMAMBO, is the fifth living foal and fourth winner (her first foal daughter SHOWDOWN placed at 2 at her only start) out of LAST SECOND, whose first three runners are all black type performers, headed by classic winner AUSSIE RULES.

LAST SECOND, a high-class runner herself whose wins included the Sun Chariot and the Nassau at Gr 2 level and who ran second in the Gr 1 Coronation Stakes, is one of three daughters of ALRUCCABA to produce a Gr 1 winner. The others are ALOUETTE (ALBORADA and ALBANOVA) and JUDE (YESTERDAY and QUARTER MOON). A fourth daughter, ALLELUIA, is dam of three time Gr 2 winner and 2007 Gr 1 Yorkshire Oaks runner-up ALLEGRETTO.

ALOUETTE’s HERNANDO colt (Tattersalls Millions) and ALBANOVA’s SADLER’S WELLS daughter (Goffs Million) are the highlight yearlings from the family being offered through Staffordstown in Lanwades Stud drafts at yearling sales over the next three weeks.

MISSION APPROVED
WITH APPROVAL’s son MISSION APPROVED, already a Grade 3 winner this year, added a Listed win to his tally when scoring an easy two and a quarter length win in the Princeton Stakes, an 11 furlong turf event at Meadowlands, at the weekend.

Also over the weekend HERNANDO posted his 6th individual 2yo winner and 26th individual 3yo winner of 2007 thanks to SEAL BAY’s success in a 1400 metre (7 furlong) 2yo maiden at Fontainebleau and HARRY TRICKER’s win a mile and a quarter handicap at Goodwood.
SELKIRK's two year old daughter MIA DILETTA gained her second stakes race when winning the Listed Premio Coolmore in Milan yesterday. She is the second juvenile stakes winner of the week for SELKIRK who now has nine winners in Group/Stakes company this season alone.

STARLIT SANDS SIZZLING CHANTILLY SUCCESS
Lanwades bred and owned STARLIT SANDS broke the 1100 metre (five and half furlong) track record in winning the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg at Chantilly yesterday.

In winning she became the second stakes winner for her dam SHIMMERING SEA, following the DANEHILL colt SEA DANE, who scored in the Listed Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle prior to becoming champion sprinter in Scandinavia.

STARLIT SANDS’ grandam SUSHILA, purchased by Kirsten Rausing as a yearling at Goffs, was a winner twice in France, including as Deauville, and bred King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner PETOSKI. She is also grandam through two other daughters of stakes winners MARAKABEI and EL SUPREMO, but her greatest second generation impact is being made through her Group 3 Silker Glider Stakes placed daughter SHIMMERING SEA.

Not only is she dam this year of STARLIT SANDS, her seventh winner from eight runners, but also through her daughter SUMMER NIGHT she is grandam of 2007 winners SOUVENANCE, SOFT MORNING and SOURIRE. And SOUVENANCE, who also placed in Group 1 company in the Italian Oaks last year, is a full-sister by HERNANDO to another Lanwades homebred filly trained by Sir Mark Prescott to win a 2yo Group race in France in recent years, 2004 Prix des Reservoirs winner SONGERIE.

SELKIRK STAKES WINNER
SELKIRK notched his second juvenile stakes winner of 2007 yesterday when KIRKINOLA won the Listed Criterium de l’Ouest at Craon in the French provinces. The Felipe Hinojosa homebred was recording her second win when comfortably taking the metric mile contest. With SHEDIAK’s close second in the Group 3 Prix la Rochette on Sunday it looks like SELKIRK 2yo’s, particularly those in France, are experiencing an Indian summer of their own.

Also posted yesterday was the 24th individual 3yo winner this year by HERNANDO, the Lanwades homebred filly TONNANTE. She is the second foal, and first runner, of the THUNDER GULCH mare THUNDER QUEEN, a US-bred but Brazilian-raced dual Group 3 winner from the family of 1000 Guineas and Cheveley Park Stakes winner RAVINELLA. THUNDER QUEEN has a HERNANDO colt foal and is in foal to DOMEDRIVER.

HERNANDO MAIDEN DOUBLE
CASUAL CONQUEST looked a 2 year old with a big future when making a winning debut at Leopardstown on Saturday. The Moyglare homebred son of HERNANDO and LADY LUCK, a KRIS mare from the family of GO AND GO and TWILIGHT AGENDA beat what looked a good field of maidens in the seven furlong event, becoming his sire’s 5th individual 2yo winner of 2007 in the process. Also on Saturday FOOLISH EGO became HERNANDO’s 23rd individual 3yo winner of the year when scoring at Fontainebleau.

A NEW GROUP WINNER FOR WITH APPROVAL
WITH APPROVAL sired his 43rd individual stakes winner on Sunday when his three year old son MISSION APPROVED was an all-the-way winner of the Gr.3 Saranac Stakes over 9.5f on the turf at Saratoga. This was his fourth win of the year after getting off the mark back in March. WITH APPROVAL also has a couple of promising European three year olds – INDIAN CHOICE who is a dual winner in France and OPAL HAZE who followed up her maiden win at Kempton with a win in Handicap company on Monday. Incidentally, both these three year olds are owned and bred by Juddmonthe who have been long-time supporters of WITH APPROVAL. Lanwades-bred three year old SANGFROID also broke his maiden last week.

YEARLING SALES RESULTS
Lanwades’ influence spreads across the yearling sales of Europe: after a filly by HERNANDO ex an Acatenango mare Midnight Angel tops the German BBAG Yearling Sales first day (on Friday, 31st August) selling for €120,000; the Danish yearling sale (on Saturday, 1st Septembert) is topped by a filly by CAJUN CADET out of Lanwades-bred WINGS OF A DOVE (Hernando – Woodren/Woodman) herself a great Champion in Scandinavia. This filly is WINGS OF A DOVE’s first foal.

WITH APPROVAL DOUBLE
WITH APPROVAL, whose 3yo runners in training in Europe number no more than six or seven, had a cross-Channel double at Wednesday. At Catterick Lanwades-bred SANGFROID appreciated the drop back in trip to break his maiden in winning the 1m 4f Foss Handicap. And over in Chantilly the progressive Juddmonte bred and Khaled Abdullah owned INDIAN CHOICE showed his versatility when adding the Prix de Tombray, a 2100 metre (10 ½ furlong) conditions event, to his win on the Deauville all-weather track earlier this month. SIR PERCY to stand at Lanwades
Dual Champion, unbeaten two-year-old and Derby winner SIR PERCY has arrived at Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, where he will join Breeders’ Cup Mile winner DOMEDRIVER (successful first-crop sire this year) as well as leading sires HERNANDO, SELKIRK and WITH APPROVAL, to stand his first season in 2008.

DRAGON DANCER SCORES IN STYLE
Lanwades-bred DRAGON DANCER, so near to winning last year's Derby when grabbed on the line by SIR PERCY, finally broke his maiden in style yesterday evening when winning the Listed Totepool August Stakes at Windsor. The son of SADLER'S WELLS and first foal of ALAKANANDA, who last season was also second in the Gr 2 Prix Eugene Adam and the Gr 3 Chester Vase, put a poor 2007 debut run at Goodwood behind him in scoring decisively from PERSIAN PUNCH's progressive half-brother CLASSIC PUNCH. His next race will be in mid-September in Longchamp's Prix Foy.

DRAGON DANCER's win came just over 24 hours after his 3yo half-brother AJAAN had scored his third win from 7 starts when taking the Breheny Handicap at Newmarket. ALAKANANDA, dam of this pair, has as her third foal ALBAROUCHE (by SADLER'S WELLS), last year's record-priced yearling filly, who is in training with Michael Jarvis, and, after missing in 2006, a 2007 son by INDIAN RIDGE. She is currently in foal to GALILEO.

Also winning yesterday to make it three Lanwades bred and/or raised products in 24 hours was loyal Lanwades client Chris Mills homebred MIDNIGHT SKY, a 3yo daughter of DESERT PRINCE and MIDNIGHT SHIFT. In winning she maintained the excellent strike rate of her dam, a winning half-sister to champion sprinter OWINGTON. MIDNIGHT SKY is the mare's fifth foal, and fifth winner, earlier ones of which include Group winner MISS ANABAA (now back with her dam at stud at Lanwades) and Portland Handicap scorer OUT AFTER DARK. JEDEDIAH PAYS TESTAMENT TO HERNANDO
JEDEDIAH became the fourth individual 2yo winner for HERNANDO in less than two weeks with his comfortable win in the Variety Club Day Maiden at Sandown yesterday. The Andrew Balding trained colt had been fifth in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on his debut and second on his only subsequent run. His immediate target is the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot.

The first foal of the three time winning GROOM DANCER mare PENELEWEY, and bred by long-standing Lanwades client Major Michael Wyatt, JEDEDIAH represents the established very successful NIJINSKY / BLUSHING GROOM cross which, when specifically applied to HERNANDO, is responsible for the high-class Lanwades-bred and owned pair SONGERIE and SOUVENANCE (out of NASHWAN mare) and also Group winners SAMANDO (NASHWAN) and TAU CETI (BAILLAMONT).

TWENTY ONE YESTERDAY
SUSIE MAY became HERNANDO’s 21st individual 3yo winner of 2007 with her seven length success at Brighton yesterday. The Bottisham Heath Stud bred filly began her career racing on the all-weather, but has improved markedly for being switched to turf. In winning she also achieved the notable milestone of being HERNANDO’s 200th individual winner.

HERNANDO DEAUVILLE DOUBLE
A consecutive race double at Deauville yesterday continued HERNANDO's current excellent run, and the debut win of the 2yo INDIAN DAFODIL brought to three the number of juvenile winners he has had in the past week.

Like LATIN LAD at Goodwood last week (see News 6 August) INDIAN DAFODIL was unconsidered in the betting for the Prix de Crevecoeur for debutant colts and geldings, but, having raced in rear, managed to find the gaps in time to get up and beat 13 rivals by half a length. The de Rothschild homebred, half-brother to two Group winners in ETENDARD INDIEN (by SELKIRK) and DEVIOUS INDIAN (by DR DEVIOUS) has a KING'S BEST 1/2 brother selling at Deauville next week.

Half an hour after INDIAN DAFODIL's success BALOR returned to form with a win over the same straight mile in the Prix Mercedes - Handicap de Normandie. The Niarchos homebred had looked a serious prospect when winning on his debut at two, but injury between times had prevented him fulfilling that promise, so it was good to see him back winning.

AJAAN ANOTHER STRIKE FOR ALRUCCABA FAMILY
AJAAN (3yo colt MACHIAVELLIAN – ALAKANANDA) broke the track record when winning the mile and a half handicap at Pontefract yesterday. The half-brother to DRAGON DANCER went some way towards fulfilling the huge promise shown at two in beating a highly regarded pair in Luca Cumani’s progressive 4yo BAUER and Marcus Tregoning’s lightly-raced improver from the family of NASHWAN and UNFUWAIN, AAJEL.

AJAAN is ALAKANANDA’s second foal, and is followed by ALBAROUCHE, the SADLER’S WELLS full-sister to DRAGON DANCER who set a new Irish yearling filly record (and became the top-priced yearling sold anyway in Europe in 2006) when bringing €2 million in the Goffs Million sale last year. She is now in training in Newmarket with Michael Jarvis. ALAKANANDA has a colt foal by INDIAN RIDGE and is currently in foal to GALILEO. A SADLER’S WELLS daughter of ALAKANANDA’s champion half-sister to ALBANOVA sells in the Staffordstown draft at this year’s Goffs Million sale at Lot 407.

JUDDMONTE’S WITH APPROVAL DOUBLE
INDIAN CHOICE maintained Juddmonte Farms’ run with 3yo’s by WITH APPROVAL when winning the Prix Cricqueville over 1900 metres (nine and a half furlongs) at Deauville yesterday. The son of the DANCING BRAVE mare CHEYENNE DREAM, from the family of Juddmonte’s star 3yo of 2007, ZAMBESI SUN is the second winner two 3yo runners by WITH APPROVAL for Juddmonte in 2007, the other being impressive Kempton maiden winner OPAL HAZE. – see News 18 July.

HERNANDO HOTTING UP
Hot on the heels of LATIN LAD’s impressive debut score on Saturday, LA GALERNA became another juvenile winner for HERNANDO yesterday when winning a mile maiden at La Teste de Buch in Southern France by 4 lengths on her second outing. She is the second winner for her dam ALGOA (by COMMON GROUNDS) who is herself half-sister to French Listed and US Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner ATLANDO. Which makes LA GALERNA a ¾ sister to that son of HERNANDO, who confirmed himself to be as good as ever at the age of six with a Listed win at Del Mar.

SHEDIAK SHINES FOR SELKIRK
The Aga Khan homebred 2yo colt SHEDIAK made an impressive winning debut at Deauville today, winning the 1500 metre Prix d’Etreham by ¾ length from the previously-raced YORKTOWN, with six lengths and 3 lengths back to the third and fourth placegetters.

SHEDIAK, who follows the Milan Listed scorer MIA DILETTA as a continental metropolitan juvenile winner for his sire this year, is the third foal of the unraced FAIRY KING mare SHEMISSA, a half-sister to two stakes winners out of Prix de Diane winner SHEMAKA from the family of dual Derby winner SHAHRASTANI.

BOLD BIBI HAT TRICK
HERNANDO 3yo filly BOLD BIBI brought up her hat-trick of wins in comfortable fashion when winning the Irish Stallion Farms Fillies Handicap over 10 furlongs at Cork yesterday. A rise in her handicap mark of 22 lbs for her two previous successes (including an apparently harsh nine lbs for a head win last time) was not enough to stop the progressive Michael Halford-trained filly, who is out of the stakes placed PERSIAN BOLD mare BIBI KARAM, who was bred and raced by the Cordell Family. She may go for a Listed mile and a quarter race next.

Another by a Lanwades sire to bring up a hat-trick yesterday was ILBARITZ, a 3yo colt by ZILZAL trained in France by Jean-Claude Rouget, who brought his record to four wins in five starts when winning a 1400 metre event at Clairefontaine. Bred and sold as a foal by Cheveley Park Stud, he is the second product of the unraced MACHIAVELLIAN mare RADIANT, a daughter of a half-sister to PIVOTAL. REVIVALIST, a half-sister to RADIANT, was sold in the Lanwades Stud draft at the Tattersalls July sale in 2006.

HERNANDO JUVENILES STARTING TO ROLL
LATIN LAD (HERNANDO – DECISION MAID) won the seven furlongs Blue Square Telebet Maiden at Goodwood on Saturday in good style on his debut, beating the Ballydoyle raider BELGRAVE SQUARE and the Mark Johnston-trained favourite MISSIONER. The Car Colston Hall Stud-bred colt, whose dam is a winning daughter of DIESIS from the family of Prix de l’Abbaye winner SILVER DIP, was a 42,000 guineas yearling purchase by Peter Doyle Bloodstock at the Tattersalls 2006 October 2 sale.

LATIN LAD’s win followed an excellent debut effort at Deauville last Wednesday by HERNANDO’s 2yo daughter SEAL BAY, a filly out of the IN THE WINGS mare TORREALTA, who was third in the Prix de Lisieux, a contest for unraced 2yo fillies which invariably draws a quality field.

WA DAUGHTERS MEET WITH APPROVAL
Keen not to let his stud companion SELKIRK take all the glory as a broodmare sire, WITH APPROVAL has been posting some impressive results himself through the progeny of his daughters on all-weather tracks. In the period since September 2005, when the first all-weather track opened in the US, three horses have been damsire of four stakes winners, while just behind them with three stakes winners is a group including WITH APPROVAL. Not only that, but in terms of AEI (Average Earnings Index as a broodmare sire) WITH APPROVAL, with an AEI of 2.57, also ranks third, behind a pair of sires with just one SW apiece, and comfortably clear of all three of the sires with four stakes winners. So, who might the most consistent damsire of all-weather runners be…?

A THIRD GROUP 2 WIN FOR ALLEGRETTO
This afternoon ALLEGRETTO picked up her third Group 2 win of her career when sprouting wings inside the final quarter-mile to get up and win a very competitive Gr.2 Goodwood Cup by half a length. She had previously won the Gr.2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown back in May of this year and won the Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks in 2006.

ALLEGRETTO is the first foal of Gr.3 Doncaster Cup winner ALLELUIA, whose second and third produce, both fillies, are in training in Newmarket with Sir Mark Prescott (ALLEVIATE) and James Fanshawe (ALVEE, a 900,000 guineas yearling by KEY OF LUCK) respectively.

ANOTHER SELKIRK SUCCESS
Further evidence emerged yesterday of SELKIRK’s prowess as a broodmare sire with the Group 2 Betfair Cup success at Goodwood of TARIQ, first foal of the unraced SELKIRK mare TATORA. TARIQ, bred at Hall Farm Stud by David Botterill, is headed next for a Group 1, a level at which SELKIRK has already had success as a damsire this year through the win of SIMPLY PERFECT in the Falmouth Stakes and the 2000 Guineas second of VITAL EQUINE.

LANWADES SALES MARES SUCCEEDING
Lanwades’ Tattersalls December Sale draft regularly includes mares which go on to be good winner producers for their new connections, and two of them produced winners last Sunday.

First PETITE EPAULETTE, sold in foal to SPECTRUM by Lanwades in 2001, produced her eighth individual winner when ONE GIANT LEAP won a seven furlong maiden at Carlisle on only her second start. Then in Japan PIENA AIM, a 2yo by the Japan Cup and Japanese Derby winner SPECIAL WEEK, won on his debut. His dam CHERE AMIE was bought to go to Japan from the 2003 Lanwades draft. The last Lanwades-bred produce out of CHERE AMIE, a NASHWAN filly named CHERISH, is a winner three times already this year as well.

This afternoon HERNANDO continued his remarkable run with his three year olds. The Aga Khan homebred filly KASATANA became his 20th individual three year old winner in 2007. KASATANA was scoring on her debut in the Prix Atalante for three year old colts and fillies and won by a convincing two lengths.

TERRESTRIAL PAIR BLINDED BY STRONG LIGHT
LUZ DE LA LUNA became the sixth individual 2007 2yo winner bred or raised at Lanwades when making a winning debut at Naas last night. The Lanwades-bred Cozzene filly clearly hadn’t read the script for the Coolmore Ivan Denisovich Maiden as she led all the way up the final two furlongs of the testing Naas straight to hold off the Ballydoyle landmasses, Achill Island and New Zealand, and the Maktoum-owned favourite Alhabeeb.

In scoring, LUZ DE LA LUNA (Spanish for moonlight) provided her dam SLEW THE MOON with a winner with her first ever runner – her first foal, the MARIA’S MON filly MOON OVER MOBAY, died unraced last year as a 2yo. She has a very nice HERNANDO colt foal and is in foal, carrying a ¾ sibling to LUZ DE LA LUNA, to WITH APPROVAL – like COZZENE a son of CARO.

SLEW THE MOON, a Group 1 and treble Group 2 winner in her native Argentina, was purchased by Lanwades off her breeders Haras Vacacion, for decades one of the leading farms in Argentina. A ½ sister to Argentine 2yo filly champion SLEW OF REALITY, she comes from the family of Irish Derby winner SHAREEF DANCER, one of the first stallions to stand at Dalham Hall Stud following its acquisition by Sheikh Mohammed in the mid-eighties.

Trainer Jim Bolger, who has had some high-class fillies through his hands in the past two decades, and whose yard currently houses 2006 2yo champion and 2007 dual Guineas winner FINSCEAL BEO, is very positive about LUZ DE LA LUNA, reckoning there is more come from the filly, the manner of whose win will surely have impressed many observers. Plans are fluid but will most likely involve a black type event next up.

TRISKEL TRIUMPH
Lanwades Stud, so nearly responsible for the first stakes winner by OASIS DREAM when STARLIT SANDS was collared close to home in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, managed to provide another first season sire in HAWK WING with his inaugural black type scorer when TRISKEL won last night’s Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown.

TRISKEL was raised at Lanwades as her dam PAT OR ELSE boarded here when part of the Matthews Breeding and Racing broodmare band. And PAT OR ELSE is still here, having been purchased by Lanwades Stud for 18,000 guineas when sold in the Matthews Breeding and Racing dispersal at the 2005 Tattersalls December Sale. At the same sale PAT OR ELSE’s dual Group 1 winning half-sister MY EMMA and MY EMMA’s stakes winning daughter MOMENTS OF JOY were the top two lots, both bought by Coolmore Stud, for 1,300,000 guineas and 1,650,00 guineas respectively.

PAT OR ELSE has bred for Lanwades a now yearling filly, named PATRONNE, and a filly foal, both by DOMEDRIVER, and is currently in foal to WITH APPROVAL. MY EMMA’S daughter EMINENCIA, a 4yo by SADLER’S WELLS purchased as a yearling by Lanwades, who showed great ability but did not make the track due to a training accident, is also now part of the Lanwades broodmare band, carrying her first foal, by SELKIRK.

TRISKEL, an €85,000 yearling purchased by her trainer Tommy Stack, is the fourth Lanwades bred and/or raised 2yo winner so far this year, after ALIZADORA, STARLIT SANDS and SOURIRE.

OPAL HAZE MEETS WITH APPROVAL
WITH APPROVAL has just four 3yo runners to represent him in Britain this year, but in the last month two have been winners, EXPEDIENCE’s Brighton win at the end of last month being followed by an impressive second start success for OPAL HAZE at Kempton last night.

Stepping up on her Yarmouth debut third, the Juddmonte owned and bred daughter of the MISWAKI mare SUMMER MIST ran away by four lengths from the consistent WICKED DAZE (second previous two starts), prompting Racing Post, who described her as a “taking filly”, to suggest that “she looks the sort to progress again”. This may not be the last time you see her name in this column.

HERNANDO SALES SUCCESS
HERNANDO' run of success with his 3yo's spilled over into the sales ring at Newmarket during the week when a colt and a filly from his classic crop sold for 85,000 and 80,000 guineas respectively. The Aga Khan bred SHABAHAR, a mile maiden winner in Ireland, brought 85,000 to the bid of Crimbourne Stud manager Paul Naughton, while the once-raced PENICUIK was bought for breeding by Glenview House Stud.

SELKIRK'S QUICK TREBLE
SELKIRK had his third stakes winner in just two days yesterday when his two-year-old daughter MIA DILETTA, out of the MTOTO mare MASCHERA D'ORO, took the Listed Premio Mantovani over sevne and a half furlongs in Milan. The Razza del Sole bred and Scuderia Blueberry owned filly had been placed on her only previous start. This brings SELKIRK's stakes winners count for 2007 to SEVEN.

SELKIRK STAKES DOUBLE AT SANDOWN
SELKIRK had a consecutive race Listed double at Sandown today courtesy of his 3yo daughter BARSHIBA and his 7yo son BALKAN KNIGHT. BARSHIBA, bred and owned by Robert Barnett, who had been second on her previous outing in a very hot Listed contest at Royal Ascot, turned the tables on BARSHIBA, her conqueror there, to take the Addleshaw Goddard Distaff Stakes over a mile. The ultra consistent Raymond Tooth-owned BALKAN KNIGHT, in making the Esher Stakes his second straight Listed win, edged out the Lanwades partnership-bred (Miss K Rausing and Mrs S M Rogers) ALAMBIC, who now races for Lady Chryss O'Reilly.

SOURIRE EARNS MAIDEN WINNER OF THE DAY
SOURIRE won her maiden on the second time of asking by bravely just getting up on the line to beat Sheikh Mohammed’s colt GOTHENBURG by a neck. She becomes the third individual winner for Lanwades’ first season sire DOMEDRIVER. SOURIRE’s dam SUMMER NIGHT is now the dam of 5 winners from 5 foals of racing age including HERNANDO sisters Gr.3 winner SONGERIE and Gr.1 Oaks d’Italia-third SOUVENANCE.

SUMMER NIGHT has a yearling colt by FALBRAV who will be sold at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part One and is currently in foal to MR GREELEY.

GREAT YEAR – ESPECIALLY FOR THE FILLIES
2007 has turned out to be an excellent year for Lanwades, with a record-priced yearling at the sales highlight and a wealth of homebred fillies performing well at stakes level spearheading a great year on the track.

STARLIT SANDS (Oasis Dream – Shimmering Sea), one of 11 individual Lanwades bred or raised juvenile winners, was the star runner in the Kirsten Rausing colours, scoring three times, including in the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg, and finishing a close second in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. One of seven homebred 2yo fillies to win in 2007, STARLIT SANDS was also one of four homebred fillies to score in stakes company, the others being the 3yo SOFT MORNING (Pivotal – Summer Night) at Deauville, that filly’s year older half-sister SOUVENANCE (by HERNANDO) in Germany and another 4yo ALMA MATER, a Sadler’s Wells half-sister to champions ALBORADA and ALBANOVA, in Fontainebleau.

Two other Lanwades-raised stakes winners were the John Pearce owned and Geoff Wragg trained pair HOTEL DU CAP, a homebred 4yo son of the HERNANDO mare MISS RIVIERA GOLF, and DRAGON DANCER, the Lanwades-bred and now John Pearce owned runner-up in last year’s Derby, who earned a deserved black-type success in Windsor’s Totepool August Stakes. But the star Lanwades-bred performer on the track in 2007 was ALLEGRETTO (Galileo – Alleluia) bred by Kirsten Rausing and Airlie Stud, sold to Cheveley Park Stud for 415,000 guineas as a yearling, and winner this year of the Group 1 Prix Royal Oak and two Group 2 events as well as being runner-up to 3yo champion filly Peeping Fawn in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks.

The ALRUCCABA family of which ALLEGRETTO and DRAGON DANCER are the latest stars made headlines in the sales ring also when, for the second year in succession, one of it’s number set a new European record for a yearling filly, ALBANOVA’s grey daughter by SADLER’S WELLS bringing €2,400,000 guineas when bought by Demi O’Byrne on behalf of John Magnier at the Goffs Million Sale in October.

With Lanwades stalwart HERNANDO notching up an incredible 12 individual 2yo winners for the year, and 2006 Derby winner SIR PERCY arriving to take up stallion duties at Lanwades in 2008, it has certainly been a banner year for the stud.

FIVE TO FOLLOW COMPETITION RESULTS
Final results are in for the Lanwades Five to Follow Competition, which this year has been won by Melinda Lowing from Brighton who gets the £2,500 prize, in second place with a prize of £1,000 is Tom Vary (husband of Sue who joined the Lanwades office team in February this year) and in third place is Zuzana Doubkova from Newmarket who receives £500. There were six people in 4th place who each get £300 including Lanwades Stud foaling man Pierre Comat, 6 people in 5th place who each get £200 and Mireille Comat (wife of Lanwades foaling man Pierre) who gets £100. Many congratulations to all the winners.

The horse with the most points for the second year running was the Lanwades and Airlie bred ALLEGRETTO amassing a total of 165 points thanks to her Gr.1 win in France, 2 Gr.2 wins at Sandown and Goodwood, as well as a Gr.1 second place in the Yorkshire Oaks and a Gr.2 third place in the Doncaster Cup. In second place with 65 was the Lanwades bred and owned speedy two year old STARLIT SANDS who won three races including a Gr.3 in France and she was second in the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

STAKES WIN FOR SOFT MORNING
Lanwades-bred and owned three year old filly SOFT MORNING followed up her third in a Listed race at Fontainebleau last month with a win in the Listed Prix Petite Etoile at Deauville yesterday. This time she actually managed to reverse the placings with In the Light who had previously finished second at Fontainbleau when SOFT MORNING finished third, and on this occasion In the Light had to settle for third. SOFT MORNING is a half sister to the Lanwades owned and bred HERNANDO fillies SONGERIE and SOUVENANCE. SONGERIE was a Gr.3 winner at two and she finished 4th in the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes at three. SOUVENANCE is the winner of four races including a Listed race in Germany and she also finished 3rd in the Gr.1 Oaks d'Italia. Their dam, SUMMER NIGHT by NASHWAN also has a two year old called SOURIRE (by DOMEDRIVER) who is owned and bred by Lanwades and has won two races this year and is rated 96+ by Timeform, a yearling colt by FALBRAV who was purchased by Sir Mark Prescott for 100,000 gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, she is due to MR GREELEY and will visit SMART STRIKE in 2008.

STAKES WIN FOR ALMA MATER
Lanwades-bred and owned four year old filly ALMA MATER ran out an impressive winner of the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit at Fontainebleau yesterday. She led from the start and drew clear to win by four lengths. This win followed up from her maiden win at Musselburgh on 9th November. ALOUETTEs yearling colt by HERNANDO was purchased by Mark Johnston Racing for 380,000 gns at the Tattersalls October Sales Part One and she has a 2007 colt by SELKIRK.

HERNANDO'S 12TH INDIVIDUAL TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER
TSARABI winning in France over the weekend makes it 12 individual two-year-old winners for HERNANDO in 2007. The two-year-old colt TSARABI was having his first run in the Prix de Floirac. He is out of VERONICA COOPER who is by Kahyasi, by Ile de Bourbon, by Nijinsky and is from the VALI family which has done so well with NINISKI (PETOSKI) and HERNANDO (MARAKABEI, SONGERIE, SOUVENANCE) etc.

HERNANDO also had his 32nd individual three-year-old winner of 2007 when KONIGSWEG won over 10f at the weekend in Germany. His three year old runners have now won a total of 49 races in 2007.

ANOTHER TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER FOR HERNANDO
HERNANDO is having a great run with his 2 year olds in 2007. The total so far now stands at 11 individual winners after Lanwades-bred FANDANGERINA made all to win over 8 1/2 furlongs at Wolverhampton last night. HERNANDO's 10th individual winner was HOT MARTA who won her maiden by 15 lengths in Denmark.

HERNANDO is also doing well with his three year old this year the tally for this stands at 31 individual winners of 44 races.

NEW STAKES WINNER FOR WITH APPROVAL
WITH APPROVAL sired his 44th individual Stakes winner when TASTEYVILLE took the Gr.3 Sport Page Handicap at Aqueduct last weekend and the four year old did it in great fashion by winning by more than 9 lengths. TASTEYVILLE has now won five races and finished second to Gr.1 winner Any Given Saturday in the Gr.2 Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont in September.

FIRST GROUP 1 VICTORY FOR ALLEGRETTO
ALLEGRETTO came from the rear of the pack with a great run to win the Gr.1 Prix Royal-Oak (French St Leger) at Longchamp yesterday and in doing so broke the track record for the race. This is her first Gr.1 victory having already won this years Gr.2 Goodwood Cup and Gr.2 Henry II Stakes following on from her win in last year's Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks. ALLEGRETTO was bred by Lanwades and Airlie Studs and was purchased by Cheveley Park Stud for 415,000 gns at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sales. ALLEGRETTO is the first foal of Gr.3 Doncaster Cup winner ALLELUIA, whose second and third produce, both fillies, are in training in Newmarket with Sir Mark Prescott (ALLEVIATE) and James Fanshawe (ALVEE, a 900,000 guineas yearling by KEY OF LUCK) respectively.

HERNANDO AMONG BIG RACE WINNERS AGAIN
HERNANDO, having a great year with his 2yo winners, which presently number 9 for 2007, had an older runner score in a big race again on Sunday at the Curragh when SANDYMOUNT EARL scored a popular win in the Hacketts Bookmakers Irish Cesarewitch.

Owned and bred by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, 4yo SANDYMOUNT EARL was scoring his third win over the Curragh two mile course and distance. His dam JOLEAH, who was also bred by Ronnie Wood, and trained, like SANDYMOUNT EARL, by Jessica Harrington, was a Listed winner of the Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown in Wood's colours.

AN ADDITION TO THE STALLION ROSTER AT LANWADES
Syndicated PICCOLO, the best stallion son of WARNING, will stand at Lanwades Stud in 2008.

Lightning-fast PICCOLO won 4 races including the Nunthorpe Stakes, Gr.1 and the King’s Stand Stakes, Gr.2 – both over the minimum distance, 5f.

At stud he has proven a solid producer of fast and durable runners. So far his progeny have won about 800 races in two hemispheres, including the Gr. 1 winners LA CUCARACHA (who like her sire won the Nunthorpe Stakes) and PICADAY (in Australia).

In Britain and Ireland alone, PICCOLO has to date produced some 85 individual two-year-old winners, including this year’s sensation, unbeaten WINKER WATSON (July Stakes, Gr.2) whose proposed bid for the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes last week was unfortunately curtailed due to a setback.

LOOK HERE – HERNANDO AGAIN
LOOK HERE became 2yo winner number seven of the year for HERNANDO when scoring on her debut at Salisbury, beating a 3-to-1 on SADLER’S WELLS colt trained for Juddmonte by Sir Michael Stoute and winning in the style of a filly with classic pretensions for 2008. The homebred, bred by Julian Richmond Watson at his Lawn Stud and trained by Ralph Beckett, is the 52nd individual 2yo winner for HERNANDO, and is the third of his four 2yo winners of 2007 in Britain to score on his or her debut.

STAFFORDSTOWN SALES SENSATION
The Lanwades-bred SADLER’S WELLS – ALBANOVA filly, consigned from Staffordstown became the highest priced European yearling sold in five years when Demi O’Byrne won the battle for her at €2.4 million. This lovely grey filly comes from the same family as last year’s €2 million sales topper also consigned by Staffordstown. She is the first foal of German Gr.1 winner ALBANOVA who is a full sister to dual Gr.1 Champion Sakes winner ALBORADA. Their dam is the Gr.1 placed Listed scorer ALOUETTE, also grandam of the Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER.

LANWADES DOUBLE
Lanwades owned and bred SOURIRE and TONNANTE posted a nice double for the stud when they both recorded their second career wins at Musselburgh on Sunday. First up was two year old filly SOURIRE by Lanwades’ first season sire DOMEDRIVER who won a competitive nursery and looks to be on the upgrade. SOURIRE’s dam SUMMER NIGHT is now the dam of 5 winners from 5 foals of racing age including HERNANDO sisters Gr.3 winner SONGERIE and Listed winner and Gr.1 Oaks d’Italia-third SOUVENANCE. SOURIRE looks likely to go to the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale this year. Next came three year old filly TONNANTE by HERNANDO who just got up to win the 14f handicap. TONNANTE is the second foal, and first runner, of the THUNDER GULCH mare THUNDER QUEEN, a US-bred but Brazilian-raced dual Group 3 winner from the family of 1000 Guineas and Cheveley Park Stakes winner RAVINELLA. TONNANTE looks likely to be sold at this year’s Tattersalls December Sales.
