an impressive debut win for son of alado
ALADO, the unraced DANZIG stallion son of dual Champion Stakes winner and World Champion three-year-old filly, ALBORADA, today had an impressive debut winner in two-year-old colt HALF MOON HOTEL at Cape Town. HALF MOON HOTEL is trained by Vaughan Marshall for owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing; the duo also have three-year-old NORTHERN CONQUEST, another son of ALADO, who has won 4 races this year. ALADO stands at Arc-En-Ciel Stud in the Cape Province, South Africa.

LANWADES AND STAFFORDSTOWN STUDS TO INCREASE SUPPORT OF CURRAGH
Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs have agreed to extend their support of the Curragh Racecourse by supporting the Gr.3 Lanwades Stud Stakes on Sunday 26th August for fillies and mares aged three-year-old and upwards over nine furlongs, in addition to the Listed Staffordstown Stud Fillies Stakes for two-year-olds, which takes place at the finale of the Curragh season on Sunday 14th October.
Lanwades Stud is home to AUSSIE RULES, HERNANDO and SELKIRK, together with Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes and Gr.1 Derby winner SIR PERCY and Gr.1 winner ARCHIPENKO, while Staffordstown Stud in County Meath has been responsible for rearing top class performers including ALBORADA, ALBANOVA and LADY JANE DIGBY.
Kirsten Rausing said: “I am delighted to be able to support Irish racing and breeding in this way. Having lived and worked in Ireland myself, I particularly appreciate the opportunity to have raised our yearlings on the excellent land at Staffordstown in Co. Meath for the last 20 years.”
Evan Arkwright commented: “We are very grateful for the additional support from Kirsten Rausing and all her team at Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs, which will help us continue to boost the quality and competitiveness of our races for fillies and mares.”

FURTHER FOALS
Three further arrivals have brought the 2012 foal tally to 17 so far. RAINBOW QUEST mare SALINIA has a first foal bay colt by CAMACHO. The British Bloodstock Agency-owned mare is a half sister to 2011 French Derby winner RELIABLE MAN, both out of Listed winner ON FAIR STAGE, herself a daughter of triple Oaks winner - Epsom, Curragh, York - FAIR SALINIA. SALINIA will now visit DANSILI.
The other two new foals are bay fillies out of Lanwades mares NINOTCHKA and MARIA DI SCOZIA. The beautifully-bred NINOTCHKA, already dam of three winning daughters including stakes placed pair NADESZHDA and NATALIYA, has an ARCHIPENKO daughter, a filly linebred to SPECIAL who is great-granddam of her mother and granddam of her sire. NINOTCHKA is returning to ARCHIPENKO - makes sense! The other filly is a second foal for MARIA DI SCOZIA and is from the first crop of the impeccably-bred DANZIG horse MAWATHEEQ. MARIA DI SCOZIA, who also visits ARCHIPENKO, is a granddaughter of Italian Horse of the Year MARIA WALESKA, dam of Champion sprinter POLISH PATRIOT (by DANZIG) and granddam of Lanwades' 2010 Gr.1 winning homebred LADY JANE DIGBY (by DANZIG's grandson, OASIS DREAM) as well as multiple Gr.3 winner GATEMAN (by another grandson of DANZIG, OWINGTON).
SECOND SEVEN
The first six days of February brought seven further foals - three in one day, two bred by long-time Lanwades friend and client Mr John Pearce.
Listed winning full-sisters MISS CORNICHE and MISS RIVIERA GOLF, both by Lanwades' sire HERNANDO foaled fillies within three days of each other for Mr Pearce. The former has a chesnut by PIVOTAL, a half-sister to three winners (three of the mare's first four produce) including 2011 Ebor Handicap winner MOYENNE CORNICHE himself by SELKIRK. She visits GALILEO, sire of her as yet unraced 2009 colt ITALIAN RIVIERA. Her elder sister, winner of a Listed mile race at Maisons-Laffitte and dam already of six winners, has a bay by 2010 World Champion SEA THE STARS; she too is headed to Ireland, returning to MONTJEU, sire of her 2011 two-year-old winning son GASSIN GOLF.
Among the five Lanwades-owned arrivals are two second crop sons and one daughter of ARCHIPENKO. The fillies are out of HERMANITA and WEATHER REPORT. HERMANITA's is her first daughter after three straight colts. A winning daughter by HERNANDO out of the stakes winning SECRETARIAT mare SUBJECTIVE, she now visits SIR PERCY, sire of her third colt, who realised 34,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale. WEATHER REPORT (an unraced daughter of dual Oaks winner RAMRUMA) for whom this was a third foal in as many years after a filly by SELKIRK and a colt by HERNANDO, once again will remain at Lanwades, revisiting ARCHIPENKO. The third foal by that sire born this week is a bay son of ALRUCCABA's great-grandaughter ALL A DREAM, who will also remain at the farm, to be covered by ALRUCCABA's grandson, new horse AUSSIE RULES. Incidentally ALL A DREAM's now two-year-old daughter ALL BLACK ROSE (by Lanwades' sire VITA ROSA) is in training with John Gosden in Newmarket.
The remaining two mares to produce early February foals will both also stay put to be covered by a Lanwades sire. ALTITUDE, a winning daughter of GREEN DESERT and Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE, will visit SELKIRK after producing a bay/grey filly by GALILEO, this follows a 2010 grey filly by the same sire who made €300,000 when sold by Staffordstown last year and is now in training with Sir Henry Cecil for Sir Robert Ogden.
And SADLER'S WELLS' daughter KESARA will go to ARCHIPENKO, having foaled a bay colt by SELKIRK which is a close relative to that horse's dual Group 1 winning Italian Champion son ALTIERI, a half-brother to KESARA's dam KALDOUNYA.
END OF JANUARY RUSH
The first two foals of the season arrived on 23rd January, and by month's end the tally was seven, three of them on the 31st.
The initial two arrivals were both to boarding mares. Poonawalla Stud Farm's TOUCH MY SOUL has a bay colt by STREET CRY. This is a second foal for the German Gr.3 winner after her 2011 filly by KITTEN'S JOY.
Chris and Lesley Mills' MIDNIGHT FANTASY produced a filly (her first foal) by ACCLAMATION on the same night. A three-time winner by OASIS DREAM, MIDNIGHT FANTASY is half-sister to the Mills' Group winning sprinter MISS ANABAA; she now visits ACCLAMATION’s son EQUIANO. Before the month was out MISS ANABAA had produced her own ACCLAMATION foal, a bay colt who is his dam's sixth living foal. Last year MISS ANABAA bred three-year-old winner EMKANAAT and sold her RAVEN'S PASS filly foal for 52,000 guineas. She returns to ACCLAMATION.
The first Lanwades-bred foal was also the first produce of Gr.1 winner, LADY JANE DIGBY. A seven-time winner whose career peaked with a German Gr.1 success in 2010, LADY JANE DIGBY had a chesnut colt by leading sire DUBAWI and now visits an even more successful current stallion in GALILEO.
The DUBAWI colt's arrival was followed by a first foal for a daughter of GALILEO in ALMIRANTA, herself the first foal of stakes winner ALVARITA, the product of two champions in SELKIRK and ALBORADA. ALMIRANTA had a bay filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and stays at Lanwades to be covered by SIR PERCY, sire of the mare's very promising now three-year-old half-sister ALLA SPERANZA (in training with J S Bolger in Ireland - this filly was a stakes-placed winner in 2 starts at 2 in Ireland).
Then ALMIRANTA’s close relative ALTA MODA, an unraced daughter of SADLER'S WELLS and ALBORADA, produced a bay colt by ARCHIPENKO, her third foal and third colt. ALTA MODA joins LADY JANE DIGBY in travelling to Ireland to visit a big name horse, in her case World Champion SEA THE STARS.
The last foal of January, and fourth of the Lanwades-bred arrivals, was a bay filly by our new sire for 2012 AUSSIE RULES out of Brazilian Gr.3 winner THUNDER QUEEN. The dam already of two winners, THUNDER QUEEN is another staying at Lanwades, in her case to visit ARCHIPENKO.

GREAT SALES RESULTS FOR SIR PERCY IN NEW ZEALAND
Lanwades stallion SIR PERCY had some great sales results at this week’s New Zealand’s Karaka Select Yearling Sales to end up the Leading First Season Sire there - with eight yearlings sold for an average of NZ$49,625 with top prices of NZ$120,000 for a colt and NZ$82,500 for a filly. The week before New Zealand Karaka hosted its Premier Yearling Sale where Queensland agent John Foote paid the top price of the week for a SIR PERCY yearling when a bay colt out of STAR PARADE was knocked down to him for NZ$150,000. Incidentally this colt was consigned by Rich Hill Stud where SIR PERCY has stood for the last three Southern Hemisphere seasons. Also at this sale a SIR PERCY filly was sold for NZ130,000 from Curraghmore Stud.

SIR PERCY made an excellent start when his first crop European yearlings sold in 2010 made 80,000gns, 78,000gns, 72,000gns, etc, and averaged four times his 2008 nomination fee.

THREE RUNNERS, THREE WINNERS IN 2012
Lanwades have had a great start to 2012 with three runners in the green and white colours and three winners. First winner of the year came on 2nd January when NORTHERN CONQUEST, a three-year-old gelding by ALADO, won at Kenilworth and followed up with another win on 28th January. His latest and fourth win came on one of biggest race days in South Africa, the J & B Met Day! It was a strong 1600 metre handicap and he will now be campaigned at a higher level. NORTHERN CONQUEST was purchased by Allan Bloodlines from his breeder Klawervlei Stud and managed for Miss Rausing within the support programme for her stallion ALADO. The second winner of the year is ECOSSIASE (a four-year-old filly by SELKIRK) who won her maiden over a mile at Southwell on 10th January. ECOSSAISE is being sold at the Tattersalls February Sale on Thursday, 2nd February (please see below). The latest winner is NEZHENKA (a five year old mare by WITH APPROVAL) who won her second race of her career, a decent handicap at Wolverhampton by two and a quarter lengths on 27th January.

Opportunity to purchase winning SELKIRK filly with Gr.1 connections
The winning four-year-old filly ECOSSAISE (by Selkirk - Diablerette, by Green Desert - Scandalette, by Niniski - Maria Waleska) is being sold by Lanwades at Tattersalls February Sales, Newmarket, on 2nd February (lot number 200) - click here to view catalogue page.
The filly whose winning run was over 1 mile (1600m) on 10th January at Southwell is sold IN TRAINING, with a Breeding Certificate, from Mark Johnston's Kingsley House Stables where she can also be inspected by appointment prior to the Sales.
Her sire, SELKIRK, was Champion Miler of Europe at both 3 and 4 years. He is Internationally recognized as one of the Leading Sires of the last twenty years, being to date the sire of fourteen individual Group One winners; the winners of over 1475 races and very nearly £30 million.
SELKIRK is now also emerging as a very important broodmare sire. His daughters have to date produced 14 Group winners incl. MOUNT NELSON (Gr.1), QUIFF (Gr.1), SIMPLY PERFECT (Gr.1), TERMAGANT (Gr.1), etc.
ECOSSAISE is the first produce of her dam, DIABLERETTE, herself a winner at two years. The dam also has a now three-year-old colt (RAINBOW GOLD, by Selkirk) in training with Mark Johnston and a two-year-old filly, MME SANS GENE (by Verglas), retained by Lanwades and in training with Ralph Beckett. There is also a 2011 colt by ARCHIPENKO and DIABLERETTE is due to foal to Champion two-year-old and Derby winner SIR PERCY prior to returning to ARCHIPENKO this year.
Lanwades currently has SEVEN mares from ECOSSAISE's immediate family in their broodmare band, including Group 1 winner LADY JANE DIGBY who is due to DUBAWI and scheduled to visit GALILEO this year.
Three two-year-old fillies currently in training complete the family group:
DAME NELLIE MELBA (Aussie Rules - Scandalette), with Mark Johnston; MARIELLA (Piccolo - Viva Maria), with Peter Chapple-Hyam, and the above-mentioned MME SANS GENE (Verglas - Diablerette) with Ralph Beckett.
This family stems from the great Champion racemare and Horse-of-the-Year in Italy, MARIA WALESKA (dual Gr.1 winner, dual Classic winner), herself dam of the European Champion Sprinter, POLISH PATRIOT.
ECOSSAISE will provide her eventual purchaser with an exceptional opportunity to breed from a daughter of a most important broodmare sire, from a very "live" family with plenty of potential for further Black Type additions.
Interestingly, both SELKIRK daughters and MARIA WALESKA, her daughters and granddaughters, have repeatedly shown excellent results when mated with DANZIG and his descendants.
Also selling at Tattersalls February Sale is chesnut colt by SIR PERCY ex ROSA DE MI CORAZON – lot number 107 – please click here for catalogue page and further details.

"We are of course delighted to have SIR PERCY back with us at Lanwades" said Kirsten Rausing, Owner and General Manager of Lanwades. "SIR PERCY made an immediate impact with his first crop of two-year-olds racing in 2011. Their success made for tremendous yearling sales results and therefore it is not surprising that he is booked full for the 2012 season."
