WINNER NUMBER TWO FOR SIR PERCY
Lanwades SIR PERCY enjoyed his second success as a sire when his daughter BEAUMARIS won first time out yesterday at Beverley.  BEAUMARIS showed precocious speed to win this event over the minimum trip to score by three lengths.  Many congratulations to her owner/breeder Derek Iceton and to her trainer Ann Duffield.

SIR PERCY has made an extremely promising start to his stud career, so far he has had only three runners in Britain, two have won on their debut in good style and the third has been placed.  SIR PERCY himself won on his debut, he then went on to score three more times as a two year old including the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes.  He retired to Lanwades Stud after finishing runner up in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas and then winning the 2006 Gr.1 Epsom Derby in the colours of Victoria and Anthony Pakenham.

WHAT A GREAT START FOR SIR PERCY!
Lanwades Stud’s SIR PERCY could not have had a better start to his stud career than his very first runner winning at Bath yesterday.  PERCY JACKSON was well supported and went off the 2/1 favourite in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden over five and a half furlongs.  He was held up in the early stages, then took the lead with over a furlong to go and went on to score smoothly by two and a quarter lengths.  PERCY JACKSON was bred by Clive Dennett who sold him privately as a foal to Redgate Bloodstock, he was then purchased as a yearling by his trainer Dennis Coakley for a syndicate.  PERCY JACKSON is out of an unraced HERNANDO mare FLY IN STYLE who is now the dam of four winners and is back in foal to SIR PERCY.

SIR PERCY himself won his first race in May on his debut, he then went on to score three more times as a two year old including the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes.  He retired to Lanwades Stud after finishing runner up in the Gr.1 2000 Guineas and then winning the 2006 Gr.1 Epsom Derby in the colours of Victoria and Anthony Pakenham.

ARCHIPENKO'S first creations are revealed
ARCHIPENKO - that's Lanwades Stud's international Group 1winner and second season sire, not the Ukrainian artist and sculptor - has had his first foal arrivals, a colt and a filly, both born in the Newmarket area.

First to arrive was a chesnut or grey colt out of the stakes placed DALAKHANI mare SI BELLE foaled at Rosyground Stud.  A dual winner from an outstanding family whose recent stars include FANTASTIC LIGHT and MUSIC SHOW, SI BELLE was sold by Lanwades Stud to Catridge Farm Stud for 50,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Sale. She was one of eight mares in foal to ARCHIPENKO sold for an average price of €39,600, higher than that of any other first-season British sire.

The filly, born at Lanwades, is a bay first foal out of KESARA, a SADLER’S WELLS mare from the family of SELKIRK's champion Italian son ALTIERI, bred and owned by Kirsten Rausing.

Group 1 winner ARCHIPENKO by KINGMAMBO was a World Class Miler, is closely related to 2010 US Champion BLAME and is standing at a fee of £6,000 (1st October SLF) in 2011.

SIR PERCY returns to Lanwades
Sir PercyChampion two-year-old and Derby winner SIR PERCY has returned to Lanwades Stud after successfully concluding his second Southern Hemisphere season at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand.

“We are of course delighted to have SIR PERCY back with us at Lanwades” said Kirsten Rausing, Owner and General Manager of Lanwades. “It was thrilling to see his first yearlings received so well by the market in 2010. In fact, his yearlings averaged four times his original stud fee, a higher ratio than for any other first-crop stallion standing in England or Ireland*. Bearing in mind that SIR PERCY was an unbeaten two-year-old winning from May to October over 6f and 7f himself, we now very much look forward to seeing his first two-year-olds on the racecourses of Europe this year” she concluded.

Lanwades operates a Limited Books policy with all its stallions.

SIR PERCY, an obvious outcross for the majority of British and European mares, stands at a fee of £6,000 1st Oct SLF. He is available for inspection at Lanwades by appointment, telephone 01638 750 222.

WITH APPROVAL
Lanwades announces with sadness the death of WITH APPROVAL yesterday, 21st June 2010, at the age of 24 years. WITH APPROVAL, a rare representative of the GREY SOVEREIGN sire line in Europe, was Champion unbeaten 2-year-old in his native Canada and the following year, Horse of the Year, Champion 3-year-old and Triple Crown Winner. At 4, he set a new World Record time when winning the Gr.2 Bowling Green Handicap at Belmont Park, New York. He was also a very narrowly beaten 2nd in the Breeders Cup Turf. In all, he won 13 races at 2, 3 and 4 years for a total of $2,863,540.

WITH APPROVAL’s stud career started at Live Oak Farm in Florida (1991 – 1996), from where he moved to Brookdale Farm, Kentucky (1997 – 2005) and later to Lanwades (2006 – 2010). He is sire of the winners of more than 1700 races and over $45 million. His winners are evenly divided between turf and dirt surfaces. Amongst his main winners are TALKIN MAN (Champion 2-year-old colt and sire of multiple Gr.1 winner BETTER TALK NOW), LASTING APPROVAL (Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner and sire of dual Gr.1 winner HONEY RYDER), T H APPROVAL (4-times Gr.2 winner), MISSION APPROVED (triple Gr.3 winner and Gr.2 placed), SILVERFOOT (5-times Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed), TASTEYVILLE (Gr.3 winner), etc.

WITH APPROVAL is a notable broodmare sire and has figured in the “top Ten” of this category in the USA on several occasions during the last five years.

“We will greatly miss WITH APPROVAL at Lanwades. He was a true gentleman to work with; very fertile and a most attractive horse. We hope that the several fillies he sired whilst at Lanwades will continue to keep his name in lights, both whilst racing and in the future, as broodmares” said Kirsten Rausing, Owner and General Manager of Lanwades, St Simon and Staffordstown Studs.

ARCHIPENKO TO STAND AT LANWADES STUD
“We are of course delighted to announce that Group 1 winner ARCHIPENKO is joining the stallion ranks at Lanwades," says Stud Owner and General Manager, Kirsten Rausing (also Chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association).

ARCHIPENKO is a marvellously well-bred horse with great performance, being a winner every year from 2 to 5 years and with lovely looks and temperament. I shall certainly be breeding my very best mares to him – including dual Champion Stakes winner and World Top-Rated 3-year-old filly, ALBORADA, as well as her multiple Group 1 – producing dam, ALOUETTE,” she added.

“The other good news from Lanwades is that SELKIRK, following encouraging veterinary examinations, is coming out from his temporary retirement and will again be available to mare owners in 2010, as will of course the other Lanwades stallions, HERNANDO (Group 1 winners in 2008 and 2009); Derby winner SIR PERCY (first foals 2009); Canadian Horse of the Year WITH APPROVAL (sire of the winners of $45 million) and VITA ROSA (first foals 2010).”

ARCHIPENKO can be inspected by appointment.

GOOD NEWS ABOUT SELKIRK
SELKIRK is to come out of  retirement for season 2010. Following the findings of comprehensive veterinary examinations it is with great pleasure that Lanwades can announce that SELKIRK will again be available to mare owners for season 2010. A nomination fee will be announced later this Autumn. SELKIRK is the sire of 73 individual Group/Stakes winners, of these 11 are Group 1 winners including SELMIS in 2009. SELKIRK has sired the winners of over 1100 races and his progeny earnings are over £21 million.

LANWADES’ STALLIONS SENSATIONAL STRIKE RATE
CASUAL CONQUEST’s emphatic Tattersalls Gold Cup win on Sunday, just one week after SELMIS' Premio Presidente della Repubblica score, means that both Lanwades Stud sires with Lanwades-conceived runners of classic age have produced Group 1 winners this year.

Between them HERNANDO and SELKIRK have sired 15 Group or Grade 1 winners, of which five are classic winners. HERNANDO’s four Group 1 winners two have won Derbies, one an Oaks, and the other placed in two Derbies. These, in conjunction with the recent Derby Italiano success of his grandson MASTERY (a first-crop son of SULAMANI) are clear evidence that NINISKI, through his sons and grandsons, is proving the saviour of theNIJINSKY sire line, particularly in terms of classic success.

The strike rate of sires standing at Lanwades Stud under its current ownership is outstanding, five of the six stallions who stand or have stood at Lanwades for more than two seasons - and who have sired runners of racing age - have produced classic winners, And three of these - NINISKI, HERNANDO and SELKIRK - have been champion sires in one category or another.

With this sort of record mare owners should pay particular attention to any new stallion joining the Lanwades ranks in 2010.
