Hot on the heels of MADAME CHIANG came another impressive winning debut this time for a colt by ARCHIPENKO.  Owned and trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, the two-year-old colt FARQUHAR made a most impressive debut over 8 ½ furlongs at Nottingham on 30th October.  He tracked the leaders and when asked to quicken by his jockey he showed a very good turn of foot to draw clear and win comfortably by 3 ½ lengths.  This now makes 6 individual winners for ARCHIPENKO and the fourth to win on debut; MADAME CHIANG, ONE PENNY PIECE and PLUG AND PLAY being the others.  ARCHIPENKO is also sire of dual winner and dual stakes-placed LADY PENKO.

26th October 2013
1,000TH WIN
Kirsten Rausing bred the winners of over 600 races worldwide in the period 1967 to 1998. However, detailed records of her winnes produced at Lanwades, St Simon and Staffordstown Studs (including the produce of full time boarding mares) have been kep since 1st Janaury 1999. On Saturday, 26th October Lanwades-bred CUBANITA (right) fittingly provided the 1,000th win in the Gr.3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury. She was, of course, foaled at St Simon Stud, a divistion of Lanwades Stud. That same day another SELKIRK filly FRESA continued the story by becoming the 1,001st win. Both fillies are out of Lanwades-bred mares.

23rd October 2013
Lanwades homebred filly MADAME CHIANG made a most impressive winning debut at Yarmouth yesterday over eight furlongs.  She was very slowly away and took some time to get going, but once she did she made good headway and won very nicely by four lengths.  MADAME CHIANG is out of dual three-year-old winner Lanwades-bred ROBE CHINIOISE who is a half-sister to the Listed winner KISWAHILI.  MADAME CHIANG becomes the fifth individual winner for her first season sire Lanwades resident ARCHIPENKO.  The other four being LADY PENKO (dual winner and dual stakes-placed), ONE PENNY PIECE (dual winner) and winners LIVE GRACE and PLUG AND PLAY. ARCHIPENKO’s yearlings have sold particularly well at Tattersalls Book 1 and 2 this year averaging 49,000 gns which is 8 ½ times his 2011 stud fee.  His stud fee for 2014 will be £6,000 (1st Oct) SLF.

18th October 2013

He has the ability to sire runners on all surfaces but most importantly he sired an English Classic winner in his first crop".
Kirsten Rausing, owner and General Manager of Lanwades Stud, said: "We welcome the addition of Derby winner NORTH LIGHT to our stallion roster. A proven stallion, having already produced Group/Graded Stakes winners on three continents, including St Leger winner and Champion three-year-old stayer ARCTIC COSMOS, NORTH LIGHT should greatly appeal to European breeders. Lanwades Stud and HallMarc Stallions are pleased to announce the relocation of leading American sire LEROIDESANIMAUX to stand at Lanwades in 2014 and onwards.

Gr.1 Citation Handicap, Gr.1 Atto Mile Stakes, and Gr.1 Frank E Kilroe Mile Handicap, also a further three Graded Stakes wins - and $1,658.377. He was voted the Eclipse Awards Champion Turf Male Horse in the USA in 2005.
Leader of all stallions in the USA (June 22nd 2013), LEROIDESANIMAUX headed a list comprising e.g. Malibu Moon, Speightstown, Giant's Causeway, Kitten's Joy and Medaglia d'Oro.
LEROIDESANIMAUX has to date sired 108 winners of 253 races and $16,685,000 headed by US Champion 3-year-old colt ANIMAL KINGDOM, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby and this year's Dubai World Cup, now at Arrowfield Stud in Australia before standing at Darley-USA in 2014.
LEROIDESANIMAUX has further sired Gr.1 winner UNA CABEZA, three Gr.2 winners and numerous other stakes winners, both on turf and dirt, from his first relatively small crops. He will be numerically better represented with his two-year-olds in 2014 and onwards (conceived after ANIMAL KINGDOM's Kentucky Derby win).
CANDY STRIPES, sire of LEROIDESANIMAUX, is himself a son of BLUSHING GROOM and from few opportunities sired American Horse of the Year INVASOR as well as LEROIDESANIMAUX and many other Stakes Winners; achieving a World Class 10% Stakes Winners to runners rate.
DISSEMBLE, dam of LEROIDESANIMAUX and 6 other winners, is an unraced AHONOORA half-sister to Juddmonte Farm's Stakes winner HASILI, herself dam of five Gr.1 winners as well as Champion sire DANSILI and his promising brother CHAMPS ELYSEES. Only in the past few weeks has Juddmonte produced the two impressive 2-year-old winning fillies RADIATOR and SURCINGLE from this outstanding family.
Kirsten Rausing, owner and General Manager of Lanwades Stud, said: "We are delighted and very proud to welcome "LEROI" to Lanwades. He represents the reintroduction of the BLUSHING GROOM sire line to the UK and with his pedigree, toughness and durability, marvellous racing form on both turf and dirt over distances up to 1m and 1/2f, , as well as his proven ability to sire World-class performers, he will be an immensely important addition to the European breeding industry. His pedigree makes him a suitable mate for mares by GALILEO, DANEHILL and his sons, MR PROSPECTOR-line mares and others. It will be fascinating to breed him to daughters of DANSILI! LEROI is the outcross stallion European breeders have been waiting for - and he is a proven stallion, too. We expect strong interest from mare owners throughout Europe"
"We are excited to have LEROIDESANIMAUX continue his stud career at the premier stallion operation of Lanwades Stud. European breeders will now have the opportunity to breed to this significant sire line again" said Marc Haisfeld of HallMarc Stallions.

17th September 2013
Lanwades resident first season sire ARCHIPENKO had a winner in Switzerland on Sunday over six and a half furlongs.   Irish-bred LIVE GRACE (pictured right with the black cap) got off the mark on the third time of asking after finishing second on both of her first two starts.  She now joins LADY PENKO (who is dual winner and has been Listed-placed twice in Italy) and ONE PENNY PIECE (a dual winner) as first crop winners for her young sire.

16th September 2013
FORTE DEI MARMI, a son of the late SELKIRK, recorded his first Grade 1 victory in the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes over a mile and a half at Woodbine yesterday.  Bred by Fittocks Stud, near Newmarket FORTE DEI MARMI has now won four Graded races since he moved to America to be trained by Roger Attfield which includes two Grade 2’s and one Grade 3 and this latest race is his first at the highest level. FORTE DEI MARMI becomes his sire's 16th individual Group 1 winner.

12th September 2013
LEY PERCY, a three-year-old filly by Lanwades resident sire SIR PERCY, made Slovak history after winning the Slovak Oaks at the weekend.  In adding this win to her two previous successes in the Slovak 1000 Guineas and the Ceny Arvy it made up the unofficial Slovakia fillies’ triple crown. LEY PERCY was bred by Mr and Mrs Pakenham, who of course raced her sire to win five races including two Group 1’s, and was born at Lanwades when her dam, LA PEINTURE, was a boarder.  She was purchased at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale by Czech bloodstock agent Tomas Janda and has now won three of her seven starts and over €30,000 in prize money.

4th September 2013
Two-year-old colt PISTILLO by VITA ROSA made it two wins from two starts when winning the Premio Mediterraneo at Capannelle yesterday.  PISTILLO showed plenty of late speed to win this race by two lengths after winning on his debut on 31st May over the same course and distance of 1400 metres, and is expected to step up to Listed class in his next start.  PISTILLO is one of 22 foals from the first Italian crop sired by VITA ROSA (by SUNDAY SILENCE) who started his stud career in 2009 at Lanwades before being relocated in 2010 to Allevamento II Renaccio, near Sirena, in Tuscany.  VITA ROSA has had four two-year-old runners so far this year of which two have won and the other two have been placed.  The other winner DIE BRUCKE has won in both France and Italy.

23rd August 2013
The admirable FIESOLANA relished a drop back in trip when running out an impressive winner of the Gr.3 Coolmore Stud Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary last night. The four-year-old daughter of Lanwades sire AUSSIE RULES had previously won two Group 3 races this year.

22nd August 2013
SIR ANDREW, a son of Lanwades sire SIR PERCY, made a winning debut at Te Awamutu in New Zealand yesterday never coming off the bridle and scoring by three and a half lengths.  He had impressed his connections at home and certainly justified his reputation.  His Trainer Richard Otto said “He’s a nice horse who has shown us a lot on the way through, we’ve got a very high opinion of him. He's bred to stay, being by a son of English Derby winner SIR PERCY, and he's ticking all the boxes at the moment. We did throw a nomination in for the Caulfield Guineas, that's how highly we've rated him."
Bred by Rich Hill Stud director Alan Galbraith, SIR ANDREW was a $56,000 weanling purchase at Karaka in 2011 and is a half-brother to four winners by PENTIRE with their dam BIENNALE (by ROYAL ACADEMY)  a four-time winner herself, she is a half-sister to the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes winner DES’S DREAM.
The plan now for SIR ANDREW is to see in the next few weeks which way they will head, he may run again soon or they may just take their time with him.  Certainly an exciting prospect for his young sire.

19th August 2013
FORTE DEI MARMI, a now seven-year-old gelding by the late SELKIRK not only successfully defended his title in the Gr.2 Sky Classic yesterday at Woodbine, but he also set a new course record for the mile and a quarter race on turf.  Ridden patiently by his jockey, Eurico Rosa da Silva, to race mid division for most of the race and then once he was unleashed in the final furlong he powered clear to win by two and a quarter lengths.  Bred by Fittocks Stud, FORTE DEI MARMI is now trained in Cananda by Roger Attfield and this latest win brings his earnings close to the $1 million mark, having now won nine of his 31 starts which include a Gr.3 victory in the Singspiel Stakes in July and the Gr.2 Sky Classic both this year and in 2012.

29th July 2013
SCINTILLULA owned by Kirsten Rausing and Jackie Bolger put up an extremely game performance to win the Gr.3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown by nearly three lengths.  It was a brave decision by her trainer Jim Bolger and connections to let SCINTILLULA take her chance in this race after running a big race in the previous Saturday’s Irish Oaks where she was only beaten a length to finish fourth.  This time round SCINTILLULA set out to make all the running and although the subsequent runner up, MARS, came to challenge she was really game and resolute in the end to win this race over nine furlongs. SCINTILLULA was runner-up to subsequent Classic winner SKY LANTERN as a two-year-old in the Gr.1 Moyglare Stakes, she lost her maiden tag on her second run this year at Leopardstown before finishing second in a Listed race at The Curragh at the end of June.  The options next for this exciting filly may be the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks or the Gr.3 Give Thanks Stakes at York.

4th July 2013
FIESOLANA, a four-year-old daughter of AUSSIE RULES put up a game performance last night to take the Gr.3 Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse. This was a third consecutive win for this extremely versatile filly who won a handicap over a mile at The Curragh in May, the Gr.3 Ballyogan Stakes in June over six and now the Gr.3 Brownstown Stakes run over seven furlongs. She already has three other wins to her name including a win at two in Italy. Bred by R De Vere Hunt and purchased by Federico Barberini for €35,000 at the Goresbridge Flat Breeze-Up Sale, this filly is certainly on the up and it will be interesting to see where her trainer, Willie McCreery, places her next as she does hold a Gr.2 entry at the Curragh later in the month. FIESOLANA is one of eleven individual Group/Stakes winners for her ever consistent sire AUSSIE RULES.

14th June 2013
It was a good day for Lanwades yesterday, first of all first season sire ARCHIPENKO had his first representative on the racecourse in the UK which duly obliged winning at Yarmouth, secondly Lanwades-bred three-year-old ALCAEUS by the late HERNANDO rattled up his four timer also at Yarmouth and to round it off Lanwades resident sire AUSSIE RULES had a new Group winner. Daughter of AUSSIE RULES the four-year-old filly FIESOLANA got a good run in the Gr.3 Ballyogan Stakes which is run over six furlongs at Leopardstown to become her sire’s 11th individual Stakes winner.  Racing over this distance for the first time FIESOLANA was already a winner of four races, three she had won in France when trained by Jean Claude Rouget and this was the second win for her now trainer Willie McCreery who trains at The Curragh and whom reported that she might now go for the Gr.2 Kilboy Estates Stakes in July.

13th June 2013
Lanwades first season sire ARCHIPENKO had his very first runner in England today - there was a massive gamble on ONE PENNY PIECE (pictured right nearside) and she duly obliged winning at Yarmouth over seven furlongs.   Bred by Mrs Sarah Hamilton and now owned by her trainer Charlie McBride ONE PENNY PIECE certainly knew her job and her and the second pulled 19 lengths clear of the race of the field.  She is a first foal out of SILKEN PROMISE (by PULPIT) and is a second winner for her sire ARCHIPENKO.

12th June 2013
TWISTEDLITTLESTAR a three year old filly by Lanwades sire AUSSIE RULES landed the Swedish 1,000 Guineas at Taby last night.  Trained in Norway by Niels Petersen she finished strongly to take the race by a length to give her trainer a Classic double on the night.  Her dam, MISS ASIA QUEST, was born at Lanwades as she was bred Mr J L C Pearce who has boarded his mares at Lanwades for nearly thirty years.  TWISTEDLITTLESTAR herself was bred in Ireland by Pat Fullam and although she did not win as a two-year-old she did win at Jagersro last month, after picking up very nearly £35,000 for her latest win it will be interesting to see where she goes next.

4th June 2013
BOOMERANG BOB, a four year old colt by Lanwades sire AUSSIE RULES, gained a very deserved win in the only Stakes race in Britain yesterday, the Listed Leisure Stakes at Windsor over six furlongs.  Although this was only the second win of his career, he has been extremely consistent at two and three.  Winning a maiden first time out at two and finishing second in the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes, Gr.3 Prix du Bois and the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes in that year and as a three-year-old he finished third in the Gr.2 Goldene Peitsche at Baden-Baden.  Trained by John Hills and owned by R J Tufft, hopefully we may see him next at Royal Ascot. BOOMERANG BOB is the tenth individual Stakes winner for his sire AUSSIE RULES from his first four crops and who has also sired in 2013 the Gr.1 placed second in Hong Kong WILLIE CAZALS, as well as GRAND TREASURE who finished second in the Italian 1,000 Guineas and WISH COME TRUE who finished second in the Italian Derby.

24th May 2013
Lanwades resident first season sire ARCHIPENKO has got off to a flying start to his new career as a stallion as his first runner LADY PENKO made all for an impressive win at Florence over 1200 metres yesterday.  Italian-bred filly LADY PENKO is a first foal for four-time juvenile winner LADY RANGALI and is the first runner for her sire ARCHIPENKO who has 46 two-year-olds to race for him this year.  ARCHIPENKO was a maiden winner at Leopardstown at two and he then onto to win five Group races in three continents including the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and won over £1.2 million in prize money.  ARCHIPENKO is a beautifully-bred son of KINGMAMBO, from the World's leading sire-producing family and is closely related to SADLER'S WELLS, NUREYEV, FAIRY KING and US Champion BLAME.

17th May 2013
Stakes winning half-sisters SOURIRE and SOUVENANCE were among three further mares who foaled to ARCHIPENKO in April. It is her second foal, following last year's colt by ARCHIPENKO, to whom she returns. Also visiting ARCHIPENKO having foaled recently is MOI AUSSI, a dual winning MT LIVERMORE mare from RAINBOW QUEST's family, whose first foal, two-year-old filly APTITUDE (WITH APPROVAL) is in training with Toby Coles. She also has a yearling colt by ARCHIPENKO and her foal this year is a colt by AUSSIE RULES.   LA FELICITA, dam of German Champion three-year-old filly LADY MARIAN recently produced a colt foal by CAPE CROSS, her 11th in 12 years. There was a nice Lanwades double in the green and white colours yesterday when Lanwades-bred ALBION recorded an easy win to take the Prix Cadum at Saint-Cloud and NIMIETY scored at Bath.  ALBION is by WITH APPROVAL out of Lanwades World Champion filly ALBORADA and he won this race by an easy two lengths beating a field of 12 for his trainer Andre Fabre.  He is now a dual winner and was a close 2nd in Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe and 3rd in the Gr.3 Prix du Prince D’Orange last year.  Later in the day Lanwades-bred NIMIETY was also recording her second victory when scoring in a fillies’ handicap at Bath over a mile.  NIMIETY, a now four-year-old, is by STORMY ATLANTIC out of Lanwades-bred NADESZHDA and she put up a gutsy performance to win on her second outing since returning from an 18 month absence from the track for trainer Mark Johnston and jockey Joe Fanning.

At the weekend LEY PERCY, a daughter of Lanwades resident sire SIR PERCY, won the first Slovak Classic of this season, the Listed Slovak 1000 Guineas which was run at Bratislava. The second Lanwades Stud sponsored race of 2013 was run last night at Jagersro – The Lanwades Stud Jagersro Sprint - a Listed race run over 6f on dirt at Jagersro, worth nearly £20,000 to the winner.  This year it was won by BEAT BABY (black cap) a six-year-old gelding by JOHANNESBURG out of NAJIYA by NASHWAN who was winning his first Stakes race by just getting up to score by a nose from the seven-time Listed winner ALCOHUAZ.  Bred by Paget Bloodstock BEAT BABY started his career in England winning a maiden at Hamilton at three and a handicap at Redcar for Howard Johnson.  He is now owned by Atle & Hege Walgren and trained by Niels Petersen in Norway and after this win it takes his tally of wins to nine.

Lanwades resident AUSSIE RULES sired his 55th individual two-year-old winner yesterday when LAGUNA DRIVE won the maiden over six furlongs at Rome on debut.  Although slowly away LAGUNA DRIVE recovered well and ran on to win the race by two lengths with a further four lengths back to the third.  He was bred by Razza Montalbano and sold at the SGA Selected Sale to his now owner Scuderia Effevi and in wining this race picks up the €5000 bonus for juveniles bought at the sale.  AUSSIE RULES has had some good two-year-olds from his first three crops including DJUMAMA who was Champion two-year-old filly in Germany, DUCK FEET who was unbeaten as a two-year-old in four starts in Italy as well as GRAND TREASURE who was a Listed winner and dual Listed placed as a two-year-old last year and who finished second in this year’s Italian 1000 Guineas recently.

MIRSAALE, a son of Lanwades sire SIR PERCY, won the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom yesterday and will try and emulate his father by winning the Epsom Derby.  By winning the race yesterday he automatically gets a wildcard entry into the Derby to be run on 1st June this year, but connections had already paid an entry fee to add him to the race just a couple of weeks ago.  MIRSAALE was bred by Mr and Mrs Pakenham (in whose colours SIR PERCY won the 2006 Epsom Derby) and was sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales Book 1 to Rabbah Bloodstock for 50,000 gns.  Owned by Saif Ali and trained in Newmarket by James Tate who is in only his third season as a trainer, MIRSAALE won a Brighton maiden over 7 furlongs as a two-year-old before finishing third in the Listed Ascendant Stakes at Haydock, he ended the year finishing seventh to Lanwades-bred GHURAIR in the valuable Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy at Newmarket.  MIRSAALE is likely to run in another of the trials and his young handler said “He’ll be my first Classic runner and I’m looking forward to it already”.

23rd April 2013
Six foals by our first season (two-year-olds of 2013) horse ARCHIPENKO have arrived over the past couple of weeks, five of them colts, and three of the six are out of daughters of 2004 Broodmare of the Year ALOUETTE.

Star on paper and a very nice type is a grey colt out of three-time Group 1 winner and German Horse of the Year ALBANOVA, three of whose first four foals are winners, including multiple stakes placed three-year-old of 2012 ALBAMARA. ALBANOVA, who has a three-year-old filly, last year’s winner ALWILDA (by Hernando) with Sir Mark Prescott, a two-year-old filly, ALL AT SEA by SEA THE STARS, in training with Andre Fabre and a yearling filly by OASIS DREAM which realised 450,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale, now visits FRANKEL.

ALBA STELLA, whose four foals of racing age are all winners, has a grey half-brother to that quartet and to her HERNANDO two-year-old (MOSCATO, in training with Sir Mark Prescott) and yearling colt also by HERNANDO.  She will again be covered by ARCHIPENKO. ALAKANANDA, with an even better record of five winners from her five runners, including Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, has a bay half-brother to them and full-brother to last year's filly. She visits NAYEF.

The other two colts, both chesnut, are out of RYELLA (a COZZENE half-sister to two North American Stakes winners and whose son, RALLY AGAIN is a Group 1 placed horse in Russia) and NADESZHDA, a four-time winner and Grade 2 placed in California, dam of two winners already, and a great-great-granddaughter of SPECIAL, who is also grandam of ARCHIPENKO.
Sole ARCHIPENKO filly is a bay out of MARIA WALESKA's dual winning SELKIRK grand-daughter MARIA DI SCOZIA, a full-sister to the mare's first foal, now two-year-old colt who is in training with Patrick Chamings. NADESZHDA will now visit AUSSIE RULES whilst MARIA DI SCOZIA visits BORN TO SEA. RYELLA stays at Lanwades and will go to SIR PERCY.

19th April 2013
AUSSIE RULES looks to have an exciting prospect racing in Hong Kong this year.  WILLIE CAZALS, a now five-year-old, raced in Italy in the name of CAZALS and was the winner of two Listed races as well as being 2nd in the Gr.2 Italian Derby.  He was then sold to race in Hong Kong with the intention of running in the 2012 Hong Kong, but this was missed due to injury.  He has now repaid the patience of his new owners by winning the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Cup at Happy Valley.  His now trainer, Tony Cruz, reported “he is definitely a Group horse” and his next target is possibly the Group 3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup on 5th May and then hopefully onto a Group 1 event later in the month.

18th April 2013
The Gr.3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket yesterday was won in fine style by HOT SNAP and is now the new favourite for the 1,000 guineas to be run in just over two weeks time.  Owned and bred by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms and trained by Sir Henry Cecil this filly by PIVOTAL had previously won a thirteen runner maiden at Kempton.  Although early in the race she did show signs of greenness once she was switched to the rail she began to get the hang of things and quickened up nicely to beat Gr.1 Moyglare Stakes winner SKY LANTERN by 2 ¼ lengths.

11th April 2013
Colt foals for half-sisters SONGERIE and SOFT MORNING born on the same day are among the stars in a slew of new arrivals.

SOFT MORNING, whose first foal is the 2012 stakes placed two-year-old winner SAVANNA LA MAR, has a chesnut colt (her first following three fillies) by EXCEED AND EXCEL. She also has a SMART STRIKE filly, SO IN LOVE, with Andre Fabre in France to run for her this year and also a yearling filly by SONGERIE's sire HERNANDO, and stays at home to be covered by ARCHIPENKO. SONGERIE's colt is by SOFT MORNING’s sire PIVOTAL; her first foal was a dual winner last year, she has an ARCH yearling filly, and now visits HENRYTHENAVIGATOR.
Three descendants of ALRUCCABA foaled within days, all of the produce are fillies. ALRUCCABA's Group 3 winning daughter ALLELUIA, bred and raced in partnership with Sonia Rogers and dam already of a Group 1 winner in ALLEGRETTO, has a bay daughter by CAPE CROSS, born in Ireland at Airlie Stud, where she remains to visit LAWMAN. Two of World Champion ALBORADA's daughters have themselves each had daughters, and both of them are by SIR PERCY, sire of last year's Group winner ALLA SPERANZA from this family. HERNANDO's daughter ALMAMIA, whose first two filly foals are both in training in Newmarket (ALOHA, by WITH APPROVAL, three-year-old with Roger Varian, ALPHABETIQUE, by ZAMINDAR, two-year-old with Peter Chapple Hyam) and who has a yearling colt by SELKIRK, will visit NEW APPROACH this year. Unraced ALTRUISTE, now in the ownership of the British Bloodstock Agency and Lanwades, has a grey daughter and will be covered by MEDICEAN.

Another British Bloodstock Agency-owned mare, Listed-placed winner FLORA TREVELYAN, has a filly, in her case a CANFORD CLIFFS second foal (following a GALILEO daughter which brought 230,000 guineas at last December's Tattersalls Foal Sale) and is another Lanwades-based mare going to HENRYTHENAVIGATOR this year.
GRAIN ONLY, whose first two foals are the good 2012 winners CARAVAN ROLLS ON (Timeform Rated 104) and GABRIAL'S STAR (Timeform Rated 90) has an AUSSIE RULES bay colt. She could have a big 2013 as a producer, with the once-raced three-year-old GRANULE (by HERNANDO) and a two-year-old WITH APPROVAL colt, NOBLE METAL,to represent her as well. She will travel to Ireland to visit HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR.

And finally two mares who are staying put to visit AUSSIE RULES this year have both produced colts by ARCHIPENKO and for both he is a fifth foal. CARIBANA, who first produce is the Listed-winning SELKIRK filly CUBANITA, has a two-year-old full-sister to that filly named CATADUPA in training with Roger Charlton and a yearling filly by ARCHIPENKO. IN THE PINK, whose first two foals are both winners, also has consecutive foals by Lanwades' KINGMAMBO horse, as her yearling is a colt by ARCHIPENKO.

4th April 2013
Six new arrivals, of which three are first foals. The first of the 'maiden' group is a bay/grey colt by AUSSIE RULES out of HALF MOON HOTEL, an unraced daughter of WITH APPROVAL and Argentinean Group 1 winner SLEW THE MOON. Unraced herself, but a half-sister to three winners, her dam's only runners, HALF MOON HOTEL now visits BAHAMIAN BOUNTY.
Also with a first foal colt is CLAIOMH SOLAIS, a multiple Group placed full-sister to Albany Stakes winner and Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up CUIS GHAIRE and to 2013 three-year-old SCINTILLULA, Gr.1 placed at 2. Owned in partnership by Kirsten Rausing and the mare's breeder Jim Bolger, the daughter of GALILEO is from the family of Irish Derby winner SOLDIER OF FORTUNE (also by GALILEO) and Dewhurst scorer INTENSE FOCUS and will remain at Lanwades to visit ARCHIPENKO. The first foal colt is by ACCLAMATION.

Another going to ARCHIPENKO in 2013 is the third of the 'first foalers' is 4-time winner MONDA, by COZZENE and a great-granddaughter of KILINISKI whose first produce is a chesnut filly by SIR PERCY.

ALRUCCABA's GREEN DESERT daughter ALABASTRINE, owned in partnership by her breeders Kirsten Rausing and Sonia Rogers, has a grey daughter by DALAKHANI. Her two winners to date, HAIL CAESAR and ALBASPINA, have respective Timeform marks of 104 and 90, with the former, a son of MONTJEU, being particularly unlucky in that three times he finished fourth in Irish Group races in his role as a Ballydoyle pacemaker. His dam now goes to another SADLER'S WELLS line horse in GALILEO's son NATHANIEL.

AKDARENA, whose first foal is a now yearling colt by GALILEO, has second foal a filly by SEA THE STARS. The Group winning great-granddaughter of Arc winner and European Champion three-year-old filly AKIYDA will visit PIVOTAL this year.

Finally SUMMER NIGHT has an ACCLAMATION filly 12th foal, a sibling to seven winners from eight runners of which four, all fillies, are Group or Stakes scorers, including the HERNANDO pair SONGERIE and SOUVENANCE. SUMMER NIGHT is scheduled to join the large book of mares in 2013 visiting INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

Following on from ALUMNA winning at Chantilly, Lanwades-bred three-year-old colt ALPINIST keeps the “AL” family flag flying by winning at The Curragh yesterday.  ALPINIST was having only his second start when he made all the running and kept on well to take the mile maiden at The Curragh on the opening day of the Irish flat season.  ALPINIST is the ninth winner from ten runners for his dam ALOUETTE who was crowned TBA broodmare of the year in 2004.  He is by NEW APPROACH and is a half brother to dual Gr.1 Champion Stakes winner ALBORADA and triple Gr.1 winner ALBANOVA.  Trained like his father by Jim Bolger who commented “He’s a hardy horse and is going the right way.  Better ground will suit him well.  He’ll go up in trip now and probably run in a Derby Trial”.

22nd March 2013

Lanwades-bred TAROOQ made it five wins in a row when just finding a gap close home to take the valuable William Hill – In the App Store Handicap over six furlongs at Wolverhampton at the weekend.  By WAR CHANT he was born in America and sold as a foal at the Keeneland November Sales in 2006 and the following year was sold as a yearling at the Tattersalls October Sale. He did not actually appear on the racecourse until as a four-year-old and now at the age of seven he has won a total of nine races and been placed in a further eight from 22 starts.  The last two races have been good prize money and his winnings now amount to over £61,000. TAROOQ is the third foal of Lanwades-bred ROSE OF ZOLLERN, winner of the Henkel Rennen, the German 1000 Guineas, and second in their Oaks, the Preis der Diana before being multiple Graded placed in the US.
ROSE OF ZOLLERN has a now three-year-old colt by STORMY ATLANTIC which was sold to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for 110,000 gns as a yearling.  Her yearling of this year is a colt by US two-year-old Champion LOOKIN AT LUCKY (from this horse’s first crop) which will be presented at this year’s yearling sales under the Staffordstown banner.

TAROOQ’s 3rd dam KALAZERO was one of Miss Rausing’s very first mares at Lanwades (owned in partnership with Mrs S M Rogers and Ben Hanbury) and her very first foal was European Champion two-year-old KALA DANCER, winner of the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes by Lanwades foundation sire NINISKI.

8th March 2013
Among a half dozen further foal arrivals at Lanwades are a pair bred by Mr John Pearce, bay colts out of full-sisters and each the son of a recent Derby winner.  The elder by three days is the son of 2011 Epsom hero POUR MOI out of MISS RIVIERA GOLF, a Listed-winning daughter of HERNANDO and MISS BEAULIEU who has already produced six winners, most recently last year's Timeform 102-rated dual winner GASSIN GOLF.  MISS PROVENCE, a winner from just three starts, has produced a colt by 2009 Horse of the Year SEA THE STARS. The bay is half-brother to two winners, including dual Stakes placed juvenile of 2012 OASIS CANNES. MISS PROVENCE now travels to Ireland to visit FASTNET ROCK, while her sister stays local to go to PIVOTAL.

Also visiting PIVOTAL is another boarding mare, NORDHOCK, whose 2013 produce is a bay filly by OASIS DREAM. The half-sister to MASTERCRAFTSMAN has a two-year-old daughter by SEA THE STARS in training in Japan and a yearling colt by DANSILI.

The sole Lanwades-owned foaler amongst the half-dozen is ROSA DE MI CORAZON, who has a chesnut colt by ARCHIPENKO. An unbeaten (three-for-three) daughter of COZZENE and German 1000 Guineas winner ROSE OF ZOLLERN, ROSA DE MI CORAZON has the three-year-old, NOVGOROD, by MOTIVATOR (in Spain) and two-year-old SIR PERCY colt KING CALYPSO, in training with Dennis Coakley, to run for her this year.  She stays at home to visit AUSSIE RULES.

The remaining two foalers are both British Bloodstock Agency-owned mares. FIRST TURN, a grand-daughter of PUSHY, has a second foal a colt by ACCLAMATION.  Her first produce, RIGHT FIRST, is an EXCEED AND EXCEL two-year-old filly in training in Ireland with David Wachman. She will return to Ireland to visit LAWMAN. SALINIA, also a grand-daughter of a high-class racemare (Triple Oaks winner FAIR SALINIA) and additionally a half-sister herself to a classic winner (Prix du Jockey Club winner RELIABLE MAN) also has a 2013 second foal, in her case a colt by DANSILI. Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs have agreed to increase their partnership with the Curragh Racecourse by adding their names to the Blandford Stakes taking place on Saturday, 14th September 2013.  The Gr.2 contest, which is named to honour one of the great sires of the 20th century, is one of the most prestigious and valuable races for fillies and mares over ten furlongs in Europe, with previous notable winners including Chinese White (Dalakhani), Red Bloom (Selkirk), Irresistible Jewel (Danehill) and Chorist (Pivotal), while the Aidan O’Brien-trained Up (Galileo) landed the race last year. “We are pleased to be able to support Irish racing in this way,” said Kirsten Rausing, owner of Lanwades and Staffordstown Studs. “I have been part of the Irish racing scene for more than 40 years now, both as a breeder[Fame And Glory, Irish Derby winner; Alborada, Pretty Polly Stakes winner, and many others], sales consignor [four Goffs Orby sales-toppers to date] and, in a small way, owner. Naturally, I enjoy not only the tremendous horsemanship and expertise in the Irish bloodstock industry, but also the craic that goes with it!” The sponsorship package also includes continued support of the Staffordstown Stud Stakes, which takes place as one of the feature races at the Curragh’s final race day of the season on 13th October. The race was won by the Patrick Prendergast-trained Seolan (Alhaarth) in 2012.
Established as one of the leading stud farms in Europe, Lanwades Stud is owned by Kirsten Rausing and is home to leading stallions Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy (Mark Of Esteem), Aussie Rules (Danehill) and Gr.1 winner Archipenko (Kingmambo), while Staffordstown Stud in County Meath has been responsible for rearing top-class performers, including Alborada (Alzao), Albanova (Alzao) and Lady Jane Digby (Oasis Dream).  Evan Arkwright, Commercial Manager of the Curragh Racecourse, commented: “We are extremely grateful to Kirsten Rausing for her very generous support of the racecourse through the sponsorship of two of our most significant races for fillies and mares. It is very appropriate that a race of the calibre and international profile of the Blandford Stakes should now be associated with one of the leading thoroughbred breeding establishments in Europe.”

HERNANDO, 1990-2013
Twenty-three year old dual Group One and French Derby winner HERNANDO has died from a heart attack at Lanwades Stud, where he spent his entire very successful stud career.
Conceived at Lanwades, HERNANDO was by NINISKI, who, contrary to many observer’s  expectations, turned out to be the great NIJINSKY’s  best stallion son, being Champion First Season Sire in 1984, Leading British-based Sire (Worldwide), 1991 – 93 and siring the winners of well over 1,000 races, including 10 individual Group One winners.
HERNANDO, bred and raced by the Niarchos Family, was trained as a 2- to 4- year-old by the late Francois Boutin, and after the latter’s death, as a 5-year-old by John Hammond.
HERNANDO won 7 of his 21 races, including the Prix Lupin (10f) and the French Derby, both Gr.1, the Gr.2 Prix Niel and the Prix Gontaut-Biron, Gr.3, twice; he was also second by a short head (to CARNEGIE) in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (for which he started favourite) as well as in the Irish Derby and the Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park. His winnings when retiring from racing were just short of $3 million, and he was the highest stakes-winning colt ever in Europe to that date.
Officially rated the Champion 3-year-old in France in 1993, HERNANDO went on to be the Joint Champion Older Horse in Europe and the USA in 1994.
At stud, HERNANDO surpassed all expectations,  in spite of only once covering in excess of 80 mares in a breeding season; to date siring the winners of over 1,230 races and more than £21 million (€26m; $32m), including 6 individual Group 1 winners (to end 2012). HERNANDO was the leading British-based sire in Europe in 2002 and now has established sire sons of his own, most notably SULAMANI [sire of MASTERY, Italian Derby and English St Leger, also GOING SOMEWHERE (BRZ), won Gr.1 GP Carlos Pellegrini in 2012], HOLDING COURT (in Saudi Arabia) and GITANO HERNANDO (in South Africa).
HERNANDO sired two French Derby winners: HOLDING COURT and SULAMANI; also LOOK HERE (The Oaks), CASUAL CONQUEST (Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup), GITANO HERNANDO (Gr.1 Singapore International Cup; Gr.1 Goodwood Stakes), RAINBOW PEAK (Gr.1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club) and other Group winners SAMANDO, ARVADA, MR COMBUSTIBLE, ALIANTHUS, HANAMI, HERBORISTE, ATLANDO, HARRIS TWEED, AKDARENA, INDIAN DAFFODIL, SONGERIE, ASIAN HEIGHTS, JUST WONDER and TAU CETI.
To date, HERNANDO is the sire of 78 lifetime 2-year-old winners and 250 lifetime 3-year-old winners.
HERNANDO’s yearlings have made up to 400,000 guineas and in 2012, his yearling son out of OVAL OFFICE, bred by Lanwades and sold by Staffordstown, topped the Goffs Sportsman Sales when purchased by Stephen Hillen for €75,000 – he is now trained by David Simcock in Newmarket.
Now emerging also as a significant broodmare sire, HERNANDO leaves a number of daughters at stud around the world (including Group winners AKDARENA and SONGERIE at Lanwades).
HERNANDO had been retired from his stud duties since the close of the 2011 stud season, and his final produce are now yearlings. He was a most charming character, always kind and co-operative, and he is very sadly missed by us all at Lanwades. I particularly wish to thank the horse’s owner/breeders, the Niarchos family, for entrusting him to us at Lanwades, and to his devoted handler, Steve McKeown, who has looked after HERNANDO at Lanwades for 17 years”  said Kirsten Rausing, owner of Lanwades Stud.
HERNANDO has been buried next to his stud companion, Champion racehorse and sire SELKIRK, at Lanwades.

13th February 2013
Eight further foals in a week have boosted the 2013 total to 19.

LADY JANE DIGBY, Group 1 winner of seven races, has a second foal bay colt by GALILEO, her second colt after last year's chesnut by DUBAWI. A half-sister to multiple Group 3 winner GATEMAN and Royal Hunt Cup scorer SURPRISE ENCOUNTER, LADY JANE DIGBY is herself a third generation Lanwades product, being a granddaughter of MARIA WALESKA. She returns to GALILEO.

Two other Lanwades-bred winners have produced first foals. ALABELLE, a winning GALILEO half-sister to Derby runner-up DRAGON DANCER, has a bay filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. As a great, great-granddaughter of ALRUCCABA, the filly is a fifth generation Lanwades product. Her dam will now visit INVINCIBLE SPIRIT’s Prix du Jockey Club winning son LAWMAN. MOTRICE, a Listed winning and multiple Group placed half-sister to seven-time Listed winner FOREIGN AFFAIRS, has a grey colt by NAYEF and will head to Ireland also, visiting SEA THE STARS.

Also among SEA THE STARS' book this year will be KESARA, a dual winner by SADLER'S WELLS who recently foaled a filly by ARCHIPENKO. The bay, her dam's third foal, is a full sister to her dam's first produce, APPARATCHIKA, a two-year-old filly in training with Mike de Kock, who did such a good job with her sire as an older horse.

Another mare with a second daughter by ARCHIPENKO is ROBE CHINOISE, whose two-year-old daughter by the horse, MADAME CHIANG, is in training with David Simcock. The pair are sisters to the multiple winning SELKIRK brothers MANNLICHEN and ORIENTAL SCOT out of Timeform 103 rated ROBE CHINOISE, whose own dam KILINISKI was fourth in the Oaks after winning the Lingfield Oaks Trial and started favourite for the 1985 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

EMINENCIA, who also has a two-year-old daughter by ARCHIPENKO (ARCHDUCHESS, trained by Rae Guest, as was MY EMMA) to run for her this year, has a bay filly in 2013 by MAKFI. Unraced EMINENCIA, a daughter herself of Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille winner MY EMMA, also has a three-year-old daughter, JAN JEFFER (by TAMAYUZ) to run for her this year, as well as a yearling colt by ARCHIPENKO.
The two other arrivals are fillies out of black-type boarders MISS CORNICHE and MISS ANABAA. The former has a chesnut by GALILEO, her eighth foal and a half-sister to four winners including multiple Stakes placed Ebor Handicap winner MOYENNE CORNICHE. Mr John Pearce-owned and bred MISS CORNICHE, a Listed winner by HERNANDO, now goes to OASIS DREAM. Chris Mills' Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner MISS ANABAA also homebred by the Mills at Lanwades, has a bay daughter by EQUIANO. The filly is half-sister to two winners including promising Timeform 93 rated 2012 3yo winner - in the colours of her breeder - MILIIKA.

4th February 2013
A slew of recent arrivals have reminded us that the 2013 season is very much upon us.

One of the early stars is a bay filly by SEA THE STARS out of ALTA MODA. The fourth foal of her dam, an unraced daughter of SADLER'S WELLS and World Champion filly ALBORADA, the filly is half-sister to GHURAIR, winner of the Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy at two last year. ALTA MODA, whose third produce is a yearling colt by ARCHIPENKO, now visits INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

Coincidentally, ALTA MODA’s close relative ALMIRANTA (by GALILEO ex ALBORADA’s stakes winning daughter ALVARITA), who is also amongst the early foalers, has a yearling filly first foal by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT; this year's second foal, another filly, is by Lanwades sire SIR PERCY. This filly is very closely related to 2012 Group winner ALLA SPERANZA (by SIR PERCY, out of ALVARITA). A third mare from the ALRUCCABA family who has foaled already is ALBACOCCA. A winner herself, and one of three winners out of ALRUCCABA’s NINISKI daughter BALLYMAC GIRL, ALBACOCCA has a grey first foal daughter by ARCHIPENKO and stays at Lanwades to be covered by AUSSIE RULES.
ALBACOCCA is one of six daughters of the excellent broodmare sire WITH APPROVAL in the Lanwades broodmare band and two of the others have also foaled already, each with a first foal and each with a colt by a Lanwades stallion. MEDAILLE D'OR, a dual winner herself at three in 2011 and one of 11 winners out of the Group 2 stakes winning NIJINSKY mare CROCKADORE, has a colt by AUSSIE RULES and visits ARCHIPENKO. MEMORY LANE, also a dual winner at three in 2011, has a bay colt by ARCHIPENKO.

The first arrival of 2013 was not actually at Lanwades but in Kentucky where SELKIRK's stakes winning daughter KISWAHILI produced a chesnut colt by STORMY ATLANTIC, the foal being a full brother to two-year-old Stakes Winner KINETICA. KISWAHILI’s own Lanwades-bred stakes winning daughter KINETICA retires to the Lanwades broodmare band this year, visiting CAPE CROSS. KISWAHILI meanwhile remains in Kentucky to be covered by ARCHIPENKO's close relative, Breeders' Cup Classic winner BLAME.

KISWAHILI is one of two descendants of the great taproot mare SPECIAL amongst the Lanwades early foalers for 2013, HERE TO ETERNITY, a winning STORMY ATLANTIC daughter of German Stakes winner HEAT OF THE NIGHT, has a chesnut colt by ARCHIPENKO, to whom she returns.
Also returning to ARCHIPENKO after producing a colt by him (this time a bay) is OBLIGE, whose only runner to date, the HERNANDO colt HERRBUGA, was a winner in Deauville last year at three and fourth in Listed company in Paris. OBLIGE’s ARCHIPENKO now two-year-old made €57,000 last year and is in training with David Simcock.

The same trainer also handles GLASS OFFICE, a Group winner at two last year out of OVAL OFFICE, a Lanwades acquisition from the Bloomsbury Stud dispersal. OVAL OFFICE recently foaled an AUSSIE RULES filly and visits ARCHIPENKO. Her Lanwades-bred two-year-old colt by HERNANDO is another in training with David Simcock after topping the 2012 Goffs Sportsmans Sale at €75,000.
The final two arrivals amongst the January foals are the boarders MIDNIGHT FANTASY and SANTA AGATA. Chris Mills' MIDNIGHT FANTASY, an OASIS DREAM 3-time winning half-sister to Group 3 winner MISS ANABAA, has a second foal filly this time by EQUIANO, a second filly following last year's daughter of ACCLAMATION. SANTA AGATA, British Bloodstock Agency owned, and a stakes placed ANABAA mare from the family of top Australian sires FLYING SPUR and ENCOSTA DE LAGO, has a first foal colt by MAKFI and visits another Australian horse in EXCEED AND EXCEL.

17th January 2013
Less than two weeks after his death at age 25, SELKIRK has featured prominently in the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings thanks to his son CITYSCAPE, whose Dubai Duty Free success on Dubai World Cup night helped him to a mark of 124, which makes him the third best miler in Europe in 2012 behind "greatest horse ever" FRANKEL and multiple Group 1 winning miler EXCELEBRATION.
Also representing SELKIRK on the list of best horses worldwide are his dual Gr.1 winning daughter NAHRAIN (116) and the progressive AIKEN (113), who races for George Strawbridge, in whose colours SELKIRK enjoyed such a successful racetrack career.
Other Lanwades retiree HERNANDO figured on the rankings too through his Group-winning sons ALIANTHUS (whose 2012 success brought his tally of Group wins to eight) and Gr.3 winner HARRIS TWEED both on a mark of 115, while Lanwades-bred ALBION represented both his sire WITH APPROVAL (who stood at Lanwades from 2006 to 2010) and his dam, Lanwades-bred World Champion race filly ALBORADA for a rating of 110.

4th January 2013
SELKIRK, 1988 - 2013
Champion racehorse and sire SELKIRK (Sharpen Up – Annie Edge, by Nebbiolo) departed this life on 3rd January, two days after his official 25th birthday, due to old age.
SELKIRK, bred and owned by George Strawbridge, Jr, stood his entire stud career at Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades Stud in Newmarket.
Trained by Ian Balding, SELKIRK was the winner of 6 races at 2, 3 and 4 years, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr.1) as well as the Celebration Mile, Challenge Stakes and Lockinge Stakes (all Gr.2). He was the European Champion 3 and 4 year old Miler in 1991 – 92 prior to becoming the Joint Champion First-Season Sire of Europe in 1997 and the leading British-based sire of 2002. He achieved these distinctions without ever covering more than 100 mares in any one season.
To date, SELKIRK has sired the winners of well over 1,500 races (worldwide) and approximately £35 million, including 90 individual Stakes Winners, 45 Group Winners and 15 individual Group One winners, the most recent being NAHRAIN and CITYSCAPE, both in 2012.
SELKIRK, who is also emerging as a very notable broodmare sire, will have a final small crop of yearlings representing him this year.

I feel immensely privileged to have had SELKIRK standing at Lanwades throughout his stud career. He was a wonderfully kind and co-operative character. We will greatly miss him, but his memory will live on, not only here at the stud, but throughout the Thoroughbred industry in this country and abroad” said Kirsten Rausing of the horse she knew for 21 years.
